Microstructure and Properties of Low-pressure Cold Sprayed Al-based Composite Coatings on Magnesium Alloy Surface

Pure Al and Al-30%Al_(2)O_(3)composite coatings are prepared on the surface of AZ31B magnesium alloy by low-pressure cold spraying.The morphology and structure of the coatings are analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM),energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS),and X-ray diffraction (XRD),and the effects of the addition of Al_(2)O_(3)on the microstructure of the Al-based coatings are discussed.The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the coatings are fully evaluated by the micro-hardness tester,electronic tensile machine,and electrochemical workstation.The results show that the coating structure is more uniform and denser,and the porosity is significantly reduced after the addition of Al_(2)O_(3).The interfaces between the coatings and the magnesium alloy substrate are distinct,and the coatings and the substrate are mechanically combined.Compared with the pure Al coating,the microhardness of the Al-Al_(2)O_(3)composite coating is increased to 61.1 HV_(0.2),and the bonding strength reaches above 53.1 MPa.The self-corrosion potential of the two coatings is higher than that of the magnesium alloy,and the self-corrosion current density is significantly lower than that of the magnesium alloy substrate.The Al-based coatings prepared by low-pressure cold spraying have high hardness,good bonding strength,and good corrosion resistance,which can be used for the repair and protection of magnesium alloy structural parts. 展开更多

A Ti(Al,Si)3 diffusion coating was prepared on γ-TiAl alloy by cold sprayed Al?20Si alloy coating, followed by a heat-treatment. The isothermal and cyclic oxidation tests were conducted at 900 °C for 1000 h and 120 cycles to check the oxidation resistance of the coating. The microstructure and phase transformation of the coating before and after the oxidation were studied by SEM, XRD and EPMA. The results indicate that the diffusion coating shows good oxidation resistance. The mass gain of the diffusion coating is only a quarter of that of bare alloy. After oxidation, the diffusion coating is degraded into three layers: an inner TiAl2 layer, a two-phase intermediate layer composed of a Ti(Al,Si)3 matrix and Si-rich precipitates, and a porous layer because of the inter-diffusion between the coating and substrate. 展开更多

By mixing preheated high-aluminum bronze powders with different amounts of Al_2O_3 powder, a low-pressure cold-sprayed coating was prepared and sprayed onto a Cr12MoV steel substrate. The hardness of the coating and the bonding strength between the coating and the substrate were tested with a HV-1000 microhardness tester and a mechanical universal testing machine. The surface microstructure, cross-section and tensile fracture surface of the coating were observed with a scanning electron microscope(SEM). Correspondingly, the influences of the preheat treatment temperature of the bronze powder and the Al_2O_3 content on the coating performance were investigated. The results indicate that the hardness of bronze powders decreased and the coating deposition rate increased after the preheating treatment of the bronze powder. The Al_2O_3 content in the mixed powders contributed to the deformation of bronze powders during the spraying process. This trend resulted in varied performance of the coating. 展开更多

Potential engineering applications of magnesium(Mg)and Mg-based alloys,as the lightest structural metal,have made them a popular subject of study.However,the inferior corrosion and wear characteristics significantly limit their application range.It is widely recognized that surface treatment is the most commonly utilized technique for remarkably improving a substrate’s surface characteristics.Numerous methods have been introduced for the surface treatment of Mg and Mg-based alloys to improve their corrosion behavior and tribological performance.Among these,thermal spray(TS)technology provides several methods for deposition of various functional metallic,ceramic,cermet,or other coatings tailored to particular conditions.Recent researches have shown the tremendous potential for thermal spray coated Mg alloys for biomedical and industrial applications.In this context,the cold spray(CS)method,as a comparatively new TS coating technique,can generate the coating layer using kinetic energy rather than combined thermal and kinetic energies,like the high-velocity oxy-fuel(HVOF)spray method.Moreover,the CS process,as a revolutionary method,is able to repair and refurbish with a faster turnaround time;it also provides solutions that do not require dealing with the thermal stresses that are part of the other repair processes,such as welding or other TS processes using a high-temperature flame.In this review paper,the recently designed coatings that are specifically applied to Mg alloys(primarily for industrial applications)employing various coating processes are reviewed.Because of the increased utilization of CS technology for both 3D printed(additively manufactured)coatings and repair of structurally critical components,the most recent CS methods for the surface treatment,repair,and refurbishment of Mg alloys as well as their benefits and restrictions are then discussed and reviewed in detail.Lastly,the prospects of this field of study are briefly discussed,along with a summary of the presented work. 展开更多

The nanolaminated and ultrafine-grained structure initially created in the CNT/AlSi flaky powder was perfectly conserved, due to the typical ‘cold’ feature of CS. As discussed based on finite element analysis and single splat observation, self-alignment behavior of the flaky powders during impact also allowed the formation of the microlaminated structure. Hence, the scalable CS technique opens a new avenue for bioinspired material design and fabrication with complex shape. 展开更多

Copper alloys with high strength and high conductivity are an important functional material with full of potential applications. In the present investigation, a bronze with higher tin content (Cu-13.5 wt pct Sn) was prepared successfully by spray forming, the feasibility of cold roiling this alloy was investigated, and the cold roiling characteristics of this alloy have also been discussed. The results indicate that the spray-formed Cu-13.5 wt pct Sn alloy, compared with the as-cast ingot, shows a quite fine and homogeneous single-phase structure, and, therefore shows an excellent workability. It can be cold-roiled with nearly 15% reduction in the thickness per pass and the total reduction can reach 80%. The classical border between the wrought and cast alloys is shifted to considerably higher tin contents by spray forming. After proper thermo-mechanical treatment, spray-formed Cu-13.5 wt pct Sn alloy exhibits excellent comprehensive mechanical properties. Particularly, it shows a low elastic modulus (-88 GPa) and a high flow stress (over 800 MPa) after cold forming. This combination of properties is unique in the domain of metallic materials and could open new possibilities in spring technology field. 展开更多

The effect of annealing treatment on the microstructures and mechanical properties of cold-sprayed Ni coating was investigated by conducting micro-hardness and tensile tests and using a normal optical microscope (OM) ,a scanning electron microscope ( SEM), a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and an electron probe X-ray microanalyzer (EPMA). The results show that following the increase of the annealing temperature ,the micro-hardness of cold-sprayed Ni coating decreases and the elongation after fracture increases, while the tensile strength increases before decreasing. The tensile deformation and fracture behavior change from a typical brittle fracture to a hybrid brittle and ductile fracture, then to a typical ductile failure. It is found that when annealed at an elevated temperature ( e. g. 900℃ ) ,the grains tend to grow abnormally with the oxides spheroidizing and the defects agglomerating at the interfaces, causing the tensile strength reduction of the cold-sprayed nickel coating. It is also pointed out that the tensile strength of the cold-sprayed Ni coating can be significantly improved by the appropriate annealing procedures, but the elongation after fracture cannot be clearly increased because it is difficult to eliminate the main defects in the coating by the following heat treatments. 展开更多

In previous study, dense and homogenous 20wt% HAP/Ti composite coatings were successfully deposited on Ti substrates by cold gas dynamic spray technique. The results revealed that the phase composition of the HAP in the deposit is identical to that of the precursor powder and the bonding strength of the deposit is comparable/better to that of the plasma sprayed HAP. A relatively higher corrosion current of HAP/Ti composite than that of pure Ti coating in simulated body fluid indicates a good bioactivity for composite coating. In the present study, in vitro immersion test is carried out for various period of time and the formation of apatite layer on surface of composite coating proves the good bioactivity of the composite coating further. The cold sprayed HAP/Ti composite can be anticipated to be a promising load-bearing implant material for biomedical applications. 展开更多

The material selected for this work was the spray formed Vanadis4 high alloy cold working mould steel (abbreviated to V4 steel). Its microstructure, hot rolling process, and annealing treatment have been investigated. Observed from the optical and electron microscopes, the as-sprayed V4 steel had the finer microstructure of uniform and equiaxial grains ,while after hot rolling for densification and spheroidized annealing, the V4 steel obtained an excellent spheroidized structure that is favorable to subsequent quenching and tempering treatment. The spheroidized structure and level of annealed hardness of the V4 steel are almost the same as expensive imported powder metallurgy the V4 steel. It is difficult to produce V4 steel with the conventional ingot metallurgical technique, so the multi-step and high-cost powder metallurgy method is generally used at present. Compared to the powder metallurgy technique, using the spray forming technique to produce the V4 steel has obvious advantages and potential market competitiveness in reducing production costs, simplifying working process, and shortening the production cycle. 展开更多

This study investigated the performance of ColdZyme? Mouth Spray (ColdZyme), a protective barrier against common cold, in rhinovirus-inoculated healthy volunteers. This randomized, doubleblind, placebo-controlled pilot study was conducted on 46 healthy volunteers inoculated with rhinovirus 16 via the nose. Subjects self-administered ColdZyme or placebo 6 times daily for 11 days. Symptoms were recorded daily in a diary. Rhinovirus 16 in nasal and oropharyngeal samples at days 0, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 10 were quantified by RT-qPCR. The primary outcome measure was the reduction in viral load in oropharyngeal samples. Rhinovirus 16 was only detected in 35 out of 46 inoculated subjects. Exploratory analysis measuring the total viral load (i.e., area under the curve (AUC)) for days 3 - 10 in successfully inoculated subjects found that ColdZyme treatment resulted in a lower total viral load in the oropharynx (p = 0.023). In subjects who experienced symptomatic common cold, irrespectively, if virus were detected, treatment with ColdZyme resulted in a reduction in the number of days with common cold symptoms from 6.5 to 3.0 days (p = 0.014) in comparison to placebo. ColdZyme reduced virus infection in the oropharynx and reduced the number of days with common cold symptoms and highlights the possible importance of the oropharynx in common cold infections. Suitable outcome measures for a feasible study on ColdZyme are total viral load in the oropharynx in subjects having detectable virus present in nasal or oropharyngeal samples. 展开更多

The common cold is one of the most frequently encountered infectious diseases in humans and, despite the modest severity in most cases;it presents a significant economic burden upon society and individuals. ColdZyme? Mouth Spray (ColdZyme?, Enzymatica AB, Lund, Sweden) is a mouth spray intended to reduce the probability of catching a cold and can also help shorten the duration of a cold if used at an early stage of the infection, by forming a barrier on the oropharyngeal mucous membrane. This study evaluated the effect of ColdZyme? on common cold related sick-leave in preschool (kindergarten) staff. Fifteen preschool staff members were evaluated over a 6-month period and ColdZyme? was used according to instructions. Sick-leave days were recorded and compared to historical data. The number of average sick leave days decreased during the period from 7.4 days to 4.1 days (p = 0.04). It is notable that, if occurring, the majority of subjects perceived a common cold infection as milder than usual. Conclusion: Using ColdZyme? to apply a barrier to the pharyngeal mucous membrane may be an easy and practical way to prevent or reduce infections and corresponding sick leave in personnel from the preschool environment. 展开更多

Mouth Spray (ColdZyme) is a mouth spray intended to reduce the probability of catching a cold and/or can help shorten the duration of a cold if used at an early stage of the infection, by forming a barrier on the pharyngeal mucous membrane. This study evaluated the preventative effect of ColdZyme on common cold infections in personnel at elderly care facilities, and assessed the level of reduction in corresponding sick leave. The number of sick-leave days for the personnel decreased from an average of 5.2 days to 3.7 days (29%) when using ColdZyme compared to control period (p = 0.054). 63% of those who had a cold reported the symptoms to be milder than previous colds. Conclusion: Using ColdZyme? Mouth Spray to apply a barrier to the oropharynx may be an easy and practical way to prevent or reduce infections of the common cold virus and corresponding sick leave in personnel working in elderly care. 展开更多

User Experience of ColdZyme Mouth Spray against Common Cold in Competitive Athletes

Mouth Spray (ColdZyme) is intended to reduce the probability of catching a cold and/or can help shorten the duration of a cold, if used at an early stage of the infection, by forming a barrier on the pharyngeal mucous membrane. The user experience of ColdZyme on naturally occurring common cold infections was evaluated in competitive athletes training professionally or on an amateur level. Thirteen athletes completed weekly electronic surveys on occurrence of common colds, cold severity and user experience over the course of 3 months. The 13 participants reported in total 15 cold incidents with an average duration of 7.4 days. The average cold severity was 31.2 on a visual-analogue scale (VAS) ranging from 0 (mildest possible cold) to 100 (worst possible cold). The overall user satisfaction with ColdZyme was high. 81% of the reported colds were experienced to be milder and/or shorter than usual. None of the participants reported “No effect”. Out of the participants who reported absence of a cold in the previous week, 69% reported a positive answer to the question if ColdZyme had prevented them from catching a cold in the previous week. Conclusion: The present study evaluated prevention and alleviation of naturally occurring common cold in athletes, and demonstrated that ColdZyme may be an easy and practical way for competitive athletes to prevent or reduce infections of the common cold virus and corresponding unwanted absence from training and competition. Due to the lack of a comparator group, a placebo effect cannot be excluded. 展开更多

This study evaluated the protective effect of ColdZyme on common cold infections in elite athletes from three different sports (biathlon, ice-hockey and handball), and assessed the level of reduction in corresponding sick days. The biathlon team (n = 11) and the ice-hockey team (n = 29) significantly reduced the average number of sick days by 51% respectively 67% compared to historical data. No historical data on sick days was available for the handball team but 76% of those who experiences a cold during the study period reported little or very little impact on training and competition. Conclusion: Using ColdZyme may be an easy and practical way for elite athletes to protect themselves against the common cold and to prevent corresponding unwanted absence from training and competition. 展开更多

The double-layer NiCr-Cr_(3)C_(2)/Ni-Zn-Al_(2)O_(3) coatings with sufficient corrosion and wear resistance were prepared on low carbon steel substrates.The intermediate layers Ni-Zn-Al_(2)O_(3) were fabricated by using low-pressure cold spray (LPCS) method to improve the salt fog corrosion resistance properties of the supersonic plasma spray (SPS) NiCr-Cr_(3)C_(2) coatings.The friction and wear performance for the double-layer and single-layer NiCr-Cr_(3)C_(2) coatings were carried out by line-contact reciprocating sliding,respectively.Combined with the coating surface analysis techniques,the effect of the salt fog corrosion on the tribological properties of the double-layer coatings was studied.The results showed that the double-layer coatings exhibited better wear resistance than that of the single-layer coatings,due to the better corrosion resistance of the intermediate layer;the wear mass losses of the double-layer coatings was reduced by 70%than that of the single layer coatings and the wear mechanism of coatings after salt fog corrosion conditions is mainly corrosion wear. 展开更多

Cold spray,as a solid-state additive manufacturing process,has been attracting increasing attention from both scientific and industrial communities.However,cold-sprayed deposits generally have unfavorable mechanical properties in their as-fabricated state compared to conventionally manufactured and fusion-based additive-manufactured counterparts due to the inherent microstructural defects in the deposits(e.g.,porosity and incomplete interparticle bonding).This downside reduces its competitiveness and limits its wide applications as an additive manufacturing process.In the past years,many strengthening technologies have been developed or introduced to adjust the microstructure and improve the mechanical properties of cold-sprayed deposits.The term“strengthening”in this work specifically refers to improving the mechanical strength,particularly the tensile strength of the cold-sprayed bulk deposits.According to the stage that the strengthening technologies are used in the cold spray process,they can be classified into three categories:pre-process(e.g.,powder heat treatment),in-process(e.g.,powder heating,in-situ micro-forging,laser-assisted cold spray),and post-process(e.g.,post heat treatment,hot isostatic pressing,hot rolling,friction stir processing).Therefore,a comprehensive review of these strengthening technolo-gies is conducted to illuminate the possible correlations between the strengthening mechanisms and the resultant deposit microstructures and mechanical properties.This review paper aims to help researchers and engineers well understand the different strengthening methods and provide guidance for the cold spray community to develop new strengthening strategies for future high-quality mass production. 展开更多

Fast strength-ductility synergistically adjusting of cold spray additive manufactured Cu deposits via electric pulse processing

Electric Pulse Processing(EPP)treatment was innovatively introduced to optimize the strength and ductility of the CSAMed Cu deposits.The results show that EPP is an efficient and fast post-treatment to improve the strength and ductility(within tens of seconds).The larger the pulse current and number of pulses,the better the mechanical properties.Interestingly,this research found that when the heat input determined by pulse current and number of pulses exceeds a certain threshold(pulse current intensity is 2000 A,number of pulses is 10),increasing the number of repeat time could also effectively improve the mechanical properties.A tensile strength of 210 MPa and a ductility of 14.0%could be obtained with reasonable EPP parameters(pulse current intensity is 2000 A,number of pulses is 10,and repeat number is 2),which is similar to those of conventional annealing(e.g.,tensile strength is 272 MPa,elongation is 28.3%).The microstructure evolution analysis shows that EPP can effectively improve the bonding quality between the deposited particles by recrystallization,promote grain growth and the formation of twins,which is the main reason for the improvement of mechanical properties. 展开更多

In this work,pure Cu with excellent strength and ductility(UTS of 271 MPa,elongation to fracture of 43.5%,uniform elongation of 30%)was prepared using cold spray additive manufacturing(CSAM),realizing a breakthrough in the field.An in-depth investigation was conducted to reveal the microstructure evolution,strengthening and ductilization mechanisms of the CSAM Cu,as well as the single splats.The results show that the CSAM Cu possesses a unique heterogeneous microstructure with a bimodal grain structure and extensive infinitely circulating ring-mounted distribution of twinning.Based on the single splat observation,the entire copper particle forms a gradient nano-grained(GNG)structure after high-speed impact deposition.The GNG-structured single splat serves as a unit to build the heterogeneous microstructure with bimodal grain distribution during the successive deposition in CSAM.The results also show that CSAM can achieve synergistic strengthening and ductilization by controlling the grain refinement and dislocation density.This work provides potential for CSAM technique in manufacturing various metallic parts with the desired combination of high strength and good ductility without additional post-treatments. 展开更多

Flexible self-powered electromechanical devices,such as piezoelectric nanogenerators(PENGs),which are used in wearable and implantable devices,are emerging as state-of-the-art clean energy sources.In this study,a scalable supersonic spraying technique was used to prepare flexible piezocomposite films of polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)and hydrothermally synthesized ZnSnO_(3)(ZSO)cubes for PENGs.Raman spectra confirmed that the transformation of the α-phase of PVDF to its β-phase was induced by the shear stress generated between the ZSO particles and PVDF polymer during supersonic spraying.The op-timized sample comprising 0.43 g of ZSO cubes and 1 g of PVDF produced a maximum piezopotential of 41.5 V and a short-circuit current,I_(sc),of 52.5 μA.A maximum power density of 50.6 μW cm-2 was ob-tained at a loading resistance of 0.4 MΩ,which matched the impedance of the PENG.Long-term tapping and bending cycles of N_(tap)=4200 and N_(bend)=600 yielded piezopotentials of 40.5 and 1.7 V,respectively.In addition,electrical poling for 2 h increased the piezopotential to 52 V owing to the alignment of the ferroelectric dipoles in the PVDF. 展开更多
