Since the early 20th century, numerous scholars have proposed theories and models describing, interpreting, and suggesting the development paths countries have taken or should take.None of these, however, can fully explain China’s efforts, mainly through education and citizenship education,to modernize itself and foster a modern citizenry since the late 19th century. This article traces and examines these efforts through a reflective and critical analysis of such public texts as official policy documents, curriculum standards, and related commentaries, and reveals three major findings.First,China’s leaders have advanced different views of and approaches to development and citizenship in response to changing domestic and global contexts.Second, the Chinese state determines China’s development course, defines its national identity and citizenry, and selects its nation-building curricula.Third, the Chinese state’s growing desire for national rejuvenation in an increasingly competitive, globalized world in the 21st century mandates an important education mission that its citizenship education be politically and ideologically open and accommodative, and help students develop global, national and local identities and function as active, responsible citizens of a multileveled, multicultural world. This article furthers academic understanding of how China’s education responds to economic, political, and social demands and shapes students’multiple identities in a global age. 展开更多

This study investigated the perceptions of English educators and supervisors in Jeddah Governorate regarding the process of teaching English to elementary students.A survey was conducted using a sample size of 94 educators and 10 supervisors. The data indicate that respondents considered English instruction at the elementary level essential for expanding kids’perspectives, improving academic performance, and promoting international involvement. The main advantages cited are the development of English language skills and the promotion of early education.Although not as easily noticeable, the disadvantages include potential negative impacts on an individual’s proficiency in Arabic and their sense of national identification. The highlighted challenges encompass insufficient teacher training, student reluctance towards English, limited resources, and school disparities. The proposed techniques focused on prioritizing English instructors’training, ensuring the use of appropriate content, utilizing technology, and promoting awareness of students and educators. The current research found different obstacles in teaching English at elementary stages. To overcome these obstacles,it will be essential to enhance teacher competencies, develop efficient teaching methods, get the backing of stakeholders, assign adequate resources, and carry out continuous evaluations.Further research can also contribute to a better understanding of how early English learning impacts on Arabic identity and proficiency. 展开更多

In the middle and late Northern Wei Dynasty,Tuyuhun people gradually entered political field of Central Plains Dynasty, and cultural merging came with the interaction of the crowd.Although Tuyuhun Kingdom located in the northwestern area,Tuyuhun people’s epitaphs whose unearthed places were known so far were all found in the Central Plains, which shows that Tuyuhun was closely linked with the Central Plains Dynasty in politics and culture.Taking epitaph of Tuyuhun Ji as the center, this thesis analyzes the political and cultural phenomenon reflected in the epitaph,on the basis of reorganizing his genealogy and official career. At the same time, combining with unearthed epigraphs of other Tuyuhun people in the Northern Dynasties, the thesis analyzes the sinicization elements in the cognitive identity of tomb owners and their images reflected in inscriptions, and further discusses the transformation of the concepts of national, ethnic, and cultural identity of Tuyuhun people who lived in the Central Plains. 展开更多

The Long March of the Chinese Workers’and Peasants’Red Army is hailed as the“Red Ribbon on the Earth.”The Long March was characterized by revolutionary heroism and,at the same time, was no lack of revolutionary romanticism. This arduous journey also presented two difficult questions:whether to celebrate festivals and holidays or not and whether to celebrate them simply or grandly.By exploring such trade-offs,we can appreciate a strong sense of national identity among the Red Army soldiers as idealists, grasp more historical details of the world-shattering Long March, and feel the resilience and greatness of the Chinese nation. 展开更多

The civic education in Hong Kong schools is not only valued and successful, but also controversial. In the process of implementing“one country, two systems”in Hong Kong, especially in recent years, some new situations and new problems have emerged,a series of fierce social movements have continuously erupted, and some social and political disputes have continuously emerged.some Hong Kong students in citizens’political participation has gradually turned out to be the object of the“street politics”endures, even turned into‘thugs’,Hong Kong, triggered a strong concern of the whole society. In order to strive for certain demands, these students have shown themselves to the public with outrageous, fanatical and even extreme actions, which run counter to the goal and purpose of Hong Kong’s civic education and have also been suspected of crimes.Faced with the uncontrollable political fanaticism of some students, summarize the experience and lessons of civic education in Hong Kong schools, formulate corresponding programs and measures in a targeted manner, and further improve them. 展开更多

This article focuses on postcolonial Pakistan, which is divided on ethnic, economic, religious, linguistic, and political lines, and reveals the negotiations, sufferings and experiences of racism and nationalism.Through the lens of“postcolonial nationalism”,this study examines the heightened consciousness of“national identity”,quest for“belonging”,and the loss of“continuity”as depicted in Kamila Shamsie’s Kartography and Hanif Kureishi's The Buddha of Suburbia. In the current“war on ter-ror”scenario,many Pakistani people are failing to find security and shelter within and across border. The corrupt establishment as well as the religious and political mafias has deprived and shattered people’s belief in themselves by crushing their dreams of freedom. The Pakistani people have stood on the verge of their "promised land" only to watch how callously their beloved home is stricken by the superseding local and global powers under the guises of patriotism and nationalism.Furthermore, the severe consequences of 9/11 have generated a strong sense of alienation, insecurity, and recurrent fear in Pakistani diaspora, who have failed to assimilate in their host countries and remain in search of“home”. 展开更多

Purpose:This article provides an overview of how childhood curriculum in the United Arab Emirates(UAE)is designed to serve cultural values.Design/Approach/Methods:The framework of kindergarten curriculum adopts the uniqueness of children laying the foundation for their cultural identity. This paper provides a description of how this is achieved through a case study of the kindergarten curriculum in the UAE.Findings:The core elements of Emirati culture are delivered in the early childhood education(ECE)curriculum, which is influenced by global practices.Islamic studies is a key component in the Emirati kindergarten curriculum, which is designed to help children practice principles of religion, with the main Islamic values of gratitude and charity as aspects that are deeply embedded.Similarly, through social studies, children learn about Emirati heritage and culture. In addition to exposure to world communities, the learning experience engages children in authentic stories that relate to their personal lives, families, and community to build national awareness.Originality/Value:This paper sheds light on ECE in the UAE.Although the topic is of interest to UAE policymakers and educators and the global audience interested in UAE education, there is no study to the researcher's best knowledge that has examined the influence of the UAE culture on ECEcurriculum. 展开更多

Cosmopolitans, statists and liberal nationalists disagree over the relevance of regulating substantive inequalities at the global level. This paper aims to resolve the dispute among these three schools of thought.I show firstly that cosmopolitans, statists, and liberal nationalists all aim to motivate people to give in support of distributive justice at the global level. However, cosmopolitans lack a substantive theory of how to develop sufficient motivation to give globally.Secondly, the statists’account of the motivation to give is deficient because it fails to recognise the motivational force of a common national identity among people.Thirdly,Miller’s account is more plausible than the statists’but fails to facilitate a dynamic process whereby people’s national identities could be extended to the global level in order to support the cosmopolitan project. This needs to be supplemented by the statists’understanding of democratic process—one which incorporates the principles of Habermas’s communicative action as a mechanism for developing social solidarity among people.I endorse an account that recognises the motivational force of national identity and the possibility of extending it beyond nation state through democratic participation at the global level. 展开更多

Although the origins of the First World War lay primarily in Europe, its impact was felt across the world, including in China and in Australia. In the historical literature on Australian involvement in the war, there are two main points of focus, namely the unsuccessful military campaign in Turkey in 1915 and the campaign during the fi nal years of the war on the Western Front in Europe. This paper, however, shifts attention back to the other side of the world,to the Asia-Pacifi c region and to Australia itself. In particular the paper focuses on the ways in which Australia dealt with its“enemy at home”,that is,with Germans living in Australia at the time of the outbreak of war.It is argued that participation in the First World War pulled Australia in two different directions.Firstly, through its role as a belligerent power,Australia became a more signifi cant player in regional and world affairs than it had been before the war.Secondly,Australia adopted a narrower understanding of its national identity, and one which was not well suited to its new international role. 展开更多
