Four species new to science were identified in the Tellinidae museum collections in the Marine Biological Museum of Chinese Academy of Sciences.Pinguitellina triquetra sp.nov.,collected in 1981,has not previously been described or reported. It differs from other Pinguitellina species by its trigonal shape,rose-colored valve interior, and deep and wide pallial sinus, which is confluent with the pallial line.Pinguitellina protuberangla sp.nov.has a broad and deep dorsal corner, short and straight posterodorsal margin, comparatively large adductor scars, depressed and fragile shells, and deep socket at the anterior edge of the right valve.Pinguitellina minuta sp.nov.was previously misidentified as Arcopella casta in China. It is a new species based on its unique characteristics, which include small, fragile, inflated, translucent, and triangularly ovate-shaped shells with acuminated and convex umboes. As the first species described in China within the genus Abranda Iredale,1924,Abranda xui sp.nov.has internal ligaments and thin, fragile, and translucent elliptical shells with fine radials on the surface. In this study,we reorganized the species currently contained in the two genera Pinguitellina and Abranda and created keys to the known species. We believe that numerous collected bivalve specimens have been overlooked in the South China Sea,and to date, mollusk has not been adequately sampled. Thus, further exploration and analysis are required to understand species diversity in this area. 展开更多

During our investigation of diatom biodiversity in Xizang, two species exhibited unique morphological features discriminative from all previously known genera.Herein we describe these two species and describe as new the genus,Spargeria gen.nov.The new genus features narrow to wide rectangular valves, narrow valve mantles, filiform raphe branches that occur on the valve face only, terminal raphe fissures straight or slightly deflected to same side,bow-tie shaped central areas, chambered striae present on the valve face only, being absent from the mantle, wider striae near the axial area and very narrow near the margin, multiseriate striae with small and round areolae that are occluded externally.Comparatively,Spargeria zhuii sp.nov.has larger and robust valves, radiate striae, with one divergent stria near the apices, while Spargeria chenia sp.nov.is smaller, with narrow valves, striae slightly radiate in the middle, becoming convergent or parallel near apices. This new genus belongs to the family Pinnulariaceae, and it was compared and contrasted with other genera of this family. Our work suggests the need for continued studies to document the biodiversity of diatoms in Xizang. 展开更多

(Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) from Taiwan. From 2009 to 2016, a biology study was conducted on population dynamics and embryonic development. Spring season is the peak of the eclosion of overwintering larvae or pupae. The average longevity of adult was 14.8 ± 6.2 days (N = 174), the average number of eggs laid was 259 ± 3 eggs/moth (N = 2), the hatching rate of eggs was 95.4% (N = 262), and the average hatching time of eggs was 99.6 ± 18.6 hours (N = 68). The average body length of males was 5.64 mm ± 0.91 mm (N = 30), and the average body length of females was 6.28 mm ± 0.84 mm (N = 30). This finding indicates that female snout moths are larger than males (Global R = 0.058, P = 0.012). The snout moth eclosion rate was 16.9 moths/100 pods in the first year (2010/2011, N = 2,224 pods) and 10.9 moths/100 pods in the second year (2014/2015, N = 6,382 pods). The pod borer rate was 31.8% (N = 707) and the seed borer rate was 41.2% (N = 3,628) in the first year, whereas the pod borer rate was 76.2% (N = 6,382) in the second year. 展开更多

Until now the genus Amana(Liliaceae),known as ’East Asian tulips’,has contained just seven species. In this study,a phylogenomic and integrative taxonomic approach was used to reveal two new species,Amana nanyueensis from Central China and A.tianmuensis from East China.A.nanyueensis resembles Amana edulis in possessing a densely villous-woolly bulb tunic and two opposite bracts, but differs in its leaves and anthers.Amana tianmuensis resembles Amana erythronioides in possessing three verticillate bracts and yellow anthers, but differs in aspects of its leaves and bulbs. These four species are clearly separated from each other in principal components analysis based on morphology.Phylogenomic analyses based on plastid CDS further support the species delimitation of A.nanyueensis and A.tianmuensis and suggests they are closely related to A.edulis.Cytological analysis shows that A.nanyueensis and A tianmuensis are both diploid(2n=2x=24),different from A edulis, which is either diploid(northern populations) or tetraploid(southern populations,2n=4x=48).The pollen morphology of A.nanyueensis is similar to other Amana species(single-groove germination aperture),but A.tianmuensis is quite different because of the presence of a sulcus membrane, which creates the illusion of double grooves.Ecological niche modelling also revealed a niche differentiation between A.edulis,A.nanyueensis and A.tianmuensis. 展开更多

Taxonomic studies of the Odorrana versabilis group have been consistently disorganized, and they have often been incorrectly associated with an abandoned subgenus or genus Bamburana in existing literature. In this study,we conducted an integrative taxonomic analysis using molecular phylogenetic analysis of two mitochondrial gene fragments(16S rRNA and CO1)and morphological examination of 41 specimens collected during herpetological surveys in southern China. Our results confirmed the monophyly of O.versabilis group which exhibited distinct morphological traits. We also identified a cryptic lineage sister with O.exiliversabilis.Additionally,our study revealed that O.trankieni was nested within O.nasuta.Consequently,we redefined the morphological characteristics of the O.versabilis group, described a new species in this group,O.confusa sp.nov.,and proposed that O.trankieni be considered a junior synonym of O.nasuta.One of the most significant findings of this study was the observation of distinct morphological changes in adult males across all species within the O.versabilis group between the non-breeding and breeding seasons. This study contributes to research on various aspects of Asian amphibian fauna, including taxonomy, ecology, evolution, and physiology. 展开更多

Trachypithecus, which currently contains 20 species divided into four groups,is the most speciose and geographically dispersed genus among Asian colobines.Despite several morphological and molecular studies, however, its evolutionary history and phylogeography remain poorly understood.Phayre’s langur(Trachypithecus phayrei) is one of the most widespread members of the genus, but details on its actual distribution and intraspecific taxonomy are limited and controversial. Thus,to elucidate the evolutionary history of Trachypithecus and to clarify the intraspecific taxonomy and distribution of T.phayrei,we sequenced 41 mitochondrial genomes from georeferenced fecal samples and museum specimens, including two holotypes.Phylogenetic analyses revealed a robustly supported phylogeny of Trachypithecus, suggesting that the T.pileatus group branched first, followed by the T.francoisi group, and the T.cristatus and T.obscurus groups most recently. The four species groups diverged from each other 4.5-3.1 million years ago(Ma),while speciation events within these groups occurred much more recently(1.6-0.3 Ma).Within T.phayrei,we found three clades that diverged 1.0-0.9 Ma,indicating the existence of three rather than two taxa.Following the phylogenetic species concept and based on genetic, morphological, and ecological differences,we elevate the T.phayrei subspecies to species level, describe a new species from central Myanmar, and refine the distribution of the three taxa.Overall, our study highlights the importance of museum specimens and provides new insights not only into the evolutionary history of T.phayrei but the entire Trachypithecus genus as well. 展开更多

Zokors in the genus Eospalax, which are endemic to northern and western China, are subterranean rodents that inhabit various niches, including grasslands,high-altitude meadows, forests, and farmlands.Six species in Eospalax were described a century ago but their taxonomy and phylogeny remain controversial. In this study,we performed high-depth whole-genome sequencing of 47 zokor samples, comprising all six previously described species.Genomic analyses revealed a reliable and robust phylogeny of Eospalax and supported the validity of the six named species.According to the inferred phylogenetic relationships,Eospalax first divergent into two clades in the early Pliocene(ca.4.68 million years ago(Ma)),one inhabiting the highaltitude Qinghai-Xizang(Tibet)Plateau(QTP)and adjacent regions, and the another inhabiting the lowaltitude Loess Plateau and Qinling-Daba Mountains. The most recent divergences occurred between E.baileyi and E.smithii and between E.rufescens and E.rothschildi in the late Pliocene(ca.2.09 and 2.19 Ma,respectively). We also collected specimens of zokors in the southern Hengduan Mountains(Muli County,Sichuan Province),far from the known distributions of all other zokors.Morphological and molecular analyses strongly suggested that the specimens represent a new species, formally described here as Eospalax muliensis sp.nov.The new species belongs to the high-altitude clade and diverged from closely related species(ca.4.22 Ma)shortly after the first divergence in Eospalax.Interestingly,Eospalax muliensis sp.nov.possesses more supposedly plesiomorphic characters, suggesting a possible origin of the genus in the Hengduan Mountains. 展开更多

Three deep-sea black corals belonging to the family Schizopathidae, are reported from two seamounts on the Caroline Ridge in the tropical Western Pacific:Umbellapathes parva sp.nov.with depth of 1488-1766 m,Telopathes cf.magna MacIsaac&Best,2013 with depth of 937-1016 m,and Stauropathes cf.punctata(Roule,1905)with depth of 942-1353 m.The latter two species are the first records in the Western Pacific Ocean.U.parva sp.nov.is characterized by monopodial corallum, relatively long unpinnulated stalk with complex pinnulated branche s developing from the lowermost primary pinnules and small spine s.It differs from two known congeners by much smaller spine s and the present of secondary pinnules.T.cf.magna MacIsaac&Best,2013 has sparsely branched corallum, relatively long and simple pinnules arranged in subopposite or alternate pairs.S.cf.punctata(Roule,1905)is characterized by the corallum with almost planar pinnulated branches, and pinnules arranged in subopposite pairs. Our results indicate that the corallum size and shape are variable in conspecific specimens particularly those at different growth stages.By contrast, the size of the polypar spines as well as the abpolypar spines have little variation and can be served as a main differing feature for schizopathid species. The phylogenetic analyses using nuclear internal transcribed spacer region(spanning partial 18 S rDNA,ITS 1,5.8 S,ITS2,and partial 28 S rDNA)and two mitochondrial fragments cox3-IGR-coxl(COI)and trnW-IGR-nad2(NAD2)showed Telopathes,Stau ropathes, and Bathypathes had close relationships, and Umbellapathes formed a sister clade with Alternatipathes. 展开更多

The new species differs from all the congeners occurring in this region in body size and call characteristics. It is larger than Fejervarya syhadrensis and F. nepalensis, but smaller than F. teraiensis. It overlaps F. pierrei in snout-vent length, but clearly differs from it in advertisement call, with much shorter note duration, much longer inter note interval, and much lower dominant frequency. Paucity of genetic information and underestimation of species diversity in this region are discussed. 展开更多

Rhododendron kuomeianum Y.H.Chang,J.Nielsen&Y.P.Ma,a new species of Rhododendron(Ericaceae)within subsect.Maddenia in sect.Rhododendron from Yiliang County,NE Yunnan,China,is described and illustrated. The new species is similar to R.valentinianum, but it can be easily distinguished by its sparse scales on the abaxial surface of the leaf blade, fewer flowers per inflorescence and white corolla with pale red margins. There are also differences in the widths of calyx lobes, leaf blade shape and indumentum characteristics of the petiole between the new species and Rhododendron linearilobum. We confirmed that R.kuomeianum is a new species closely related to R.valentinianum and R.changii with phylogenomic studies of 10 species within this subsection based on restriction site-associated DNA sequencing(RADseq)data. These phylogenomic analyses also clarified additional taxonomic problems in this subsection previously raised by morphological analysis. Our findings make a strong case for using next-generation sequencing to explore phylogenetic relationships and identify new species, especially in plants groups with complicated taxonomic problems. 展开更多

The newt genus Tylototriton sensu lato is widely distributed in Eastern,Southeastern and Southern Asia.Previous studies indicated that there still has been several cryptic species in the group. Here,we describe a new species of the genus from Guizhou Province,China.Phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial DNA supported that the new species was resolved as an independent clade nested into the Tylototriton sensu lato clade. On morphology, the new species could be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following characters:large body size(SVL 76.8-85.2 mm in male and 76.3-87.4 mm in female);head longer than wide;snout truncate in dorsal view;tail length longer than the snout-vent length in males;the distal digit ends, ventral digits, peripheral area of cloaca and the tail s lower margin are orange;relative length of toesⅢ> Ⅳ> Ⅱ> Ⅰ> Ⅴ;the distal tips of the limbs greatly overlapping when the fore and hind limbs are pressed along the trunk;fingertips reach the level beyond the snout when the forelimbs are stretched forward. 展开更多
