A number of heuristics related to the different stages of the algorithm are considered, and various variants of the algorithm based on these heuristics are analyzed. Sets of randomly generated points of different sizes (from 4 to 90 and from 500 to 10,000) were used to test the algorithms. The numerical results obtained are compared with the results of two well-known combinatorial optimization algorithms, namely the algorithm based on the branch and bound method and the simulated annealing algorithm. .展开更多

However, its production is negatively affected by the nematode Ditylenchus. To determine the species of the nematode, as well as to propose management strategies for its control, in the present study the morphological, morphometric, and molecular characterization of the phytonematode was carried out and was used to evaluate the effect of immersion of the propagation material in water hot, application of a commercial strain of Purpureocillium lilacinum and the application of an agrochemical with insecticidal-nematicidal action to control the phytosanitary problem under field conditions. The morphological and morphometric characteristics of the nematode were similar to those reported for the type and reference populations of D. dipsaci. Based on sequences of the D2-D3 segment and Internal Transcribed Spacer-ITS of the rRNA, the presence of D. dipsaci in green onion crops in Colombia was confirmed. The application of P. lilacinum statistically showed an efficient control of D. dipsaci, at the same time that presented the highest yield, in relation to the other evaluated treatments (P ≤ 0.05).展开更多

Indian red onion bulbs were kept without wrapping at ambient conditions (25℃ ± 3℃ and 75% RH) and within polyethylene pouch at 2.5℃, 6℃, 7℃ and 13℃ for 60 days of storage period. Weight loss, total soluble solids (TSS), number of sprouted and rotten bulbs were measured at an interval of 10 days throughout storage. The greatest decrease (23.25%) in weight was observed throughout storage for onions stored at ambient conditions. TSS was observed to increase in all samples until 40 days of storage and then decreased up to 60 days. Lowest TSS (14.89 ?Bx) was found in onion stored at ambient conditions at the end of storage. Maximum sprouted (67.25%) and rotten (17.78%) onions were observed for onions stored at 13℃, whereas minimum sprouted and rotten onions were found at 2.5℃ at 60 days of storage. Results also recommend lowest temperatures (2.5℃ - 6℃) for prolong storage life of onion with no detrimental effects.展开更多

A total of 192 one-d-old as hatched broiler chicks (Ross 308) were weighed and randomly allocated to four treatment groups, each with 4 replicate pens of 12 chicks. The dietary treatments consisted of the basal diet (control), antibiotic (15 mg Virginiamycin/kg), and control +10 or 30 g fresh onion bulb/kg diet. Body weights of broilers were determined at d 1, 21 and 42, feed intake was determined at the same periods, and feed conversion ratio was calculated accordingly. At 14th and 21st days blood samples were taken for measuring antibody titers against NDV and at 42nd day for biochemical analysis. At d 42, two birds per replicate were slaughtered for determination of lymphoid organ weights. Dietary supplementation of30 g/kg onion increased final body weight of broilers at 42nd d of age compared to the other treatments (P < 0.05). Birds fed30 gonion/kg in the diet had the highest feed intake than other treatments at different growth periods (P < 0.05). Dietary treatments failed to induce any significant effect on antibody titers against NDV, although the weight of lymphoid organs was significantly (P Broilers receiving30 g/kg onion had a significantly higher HDL and lower triglyceride concentrations compared to control groups (P . Feeding30 g/kg onion resulted in a marked reduction in the concentration of the glucose compared to control groups (P . The results suggested that dietary inclusion of30 g/kg onion can be applied as alternatives to in-feed antibiotics for broiler diets.展开更多

The structure and optical properties of CDs were investigated by TEM, XRD, XRF, UV-Vis, FTIR, and fluorescence spectroscopy. CDs displayed satisfactory optical pro-prieties, a high quantum yield of 23.6%, and excellent water solubility, and the particle size was 4.23-8.22 nm with an average diameter of 6.15 nm. An efficient fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the CDs and riboflavin was achieved with CDs acting as donor and riboflavin as acceptor. A linear relationship between FRET and the riboflavin concentration from 0.10 to 3.0 μg/mL was observed, allowing the development of an accurate and fast analytical method to determine this vitamin in multivitamin/mineral supplements. Despite the potential interferences in these supplements, CDs were selective for riboflavin under optimized conditions. A paired t-test at a 95% confidence level indicated no statistically significant difference between the proposed and the reference methods. Recovery test presented values ranged from 96.0% to 101.4%. The limit of detection and relative standard deviation were estimated at 1.0 ng/mL and <2.6% (n = 3), respectively. CDs were successfully synthesized in a domestic microwave oven (1450 W, 6 min), presenting satisfactory parameters when compared with results of other studies reported in the literature, suggesting that the proposed method is a potentially useful method for the synthesis of CDs and determination of riboflavin.展开更多

Phytochemical components like total flavonoids, phenolics, ascorbic acid and anthocyanins were analyzed. The antioxidant activities were examined by DPPH and FRAP methods. The results indicated that the both the methanolic extracts exhibited radical scavenging activity. The DPPH scavenging activity in Bellary and CO 3 onion varieties ranged from 6.5% - 11.8% whereas FRAP values ranged from 0.9 - 3.3 μM/100 μg FW. The total anthocyanins ranged from 9.9 - 29.9 mg/kg, vitamin-C 48.6 - 78.6 mg/kg, total phenolics and flavonoids content was 15.7 - 34.7 mg/g GAE and 0.65 - 1.17 mg/g respectively. Substantial amounts of anthocyanins, phenols, flavonoids and ascorbic acid were noticed in both the varieties. Our study revealed that the possible mechanism of the biological activities in onion could be due to the free radical scavenging and antioxidant activities. The polyphenols present in the onion bulbs may be responsible for these beneficial activities. This study clearly demonstrated that both the onion varieties possess very characteristic antioxidant potential that will help us in keeping good health.展开更多

The transformation from NDs to carbon onions is particularly interesting because of carbon onions' potential in the field of tribology and their application in ultra-charge/discharge devices. In this paper, a novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering technique that involves coating the sample with nanoscopic gold particles is proposed to characterize the NDs after different annealing treatments. Conventional Raman and surfaceenhanced Raman spectra were obtained, and the changes of peak parameters as the function of annealing temperature were evaluated. It was found that the widths of the D and the G peaks decreased with increasing annealing temperature, reflecting an improved order in the sp^2-hybridized carbon during the transformation from NDs to carbon onions. After annealing at 1700 ℃, the sp^2?carbon was highly ordered, indicating desirable electrical conductivity and lubricity. With increasing annealing temperature, the D peak showed a blue shift of almost30 cm^(-1), while the G peak merely shifted by 5 cm^(-1). For annealing temperatures above 1100 ℃, an increase of intensity ratio ID/IGwas observed. Compared to the uncoated area, red shifts of 0.5-2 cm^(-1) and of 5-9 cm^(-1) for the G and D peaks, respectively, were detected for the gold-coated area, which was due to the coupling of the plasmons and the phonons of the samples.展开更多

Microbial counts were fitted to the modified Gompertz equation and the growth parameters of microorganisms (the initial cell number (N0), maximum cell number (Nmax), maximum specific growth rate (μmax), lag-phase ((λ)) were obtained as derived parameters. The relationships between growth parameters of microorganisms and the microbial or sensory shelf life were built. The results showed that microbial counts increased and sensory qualities decreased during storage. TPC was predominant bacteria associated with spoilage of sliced onions under tested temperatures and air conditions. High correlation coefficients (r) were found between the lag time (λ) of TPC, coliforms, pseudomonads, yeasts and the microbial or sensory shelf life. The correlations between microbial or sensory shelf life and μmax of five microorganisms were between -0.69 and -0.86. The initial microbial counts (N0) of five microorganisms strains only showed a little correlation, and the maximum microbial counts (Nmax) showed no obvious correlation with shelf life except for LAB and yeasts.展开更多

Plants however interact with one another both above and below ground with members of the same species (intraspecific) or members of a different species (interspecific) for nutrients, water and light. It is therefore essential to understand these interactions when intercropped. The objective was to examine the above and below ground interactions between onion and lettuce in monocrop and intercrop systems. We examined the various possible interactions (no competition, above ground, below ground, or full) using a full factorial randomized design under greenhouse conditions. Onion yield was highest in intraspecific above ground competition and lowest in below ground and full interspecific competition with lettuce. Dry weight of onions in above ground competition with lettuce was significantly greater than that of the control group. Fresh weight of lettuce leaves were highest in below ground and full interspecific competition treatments. The hectare model and yield results suggest that there is strong below ground competitive effect between onion and lettuce in intercrop. Asymetric interspecific facilitation was found: facilitation by onion led to increased lettuce yield but a negative effect of lettuce on onion yield was observed. Knowledge of competitive interactions between component crops can have several applications in sustainable agricultural as it helps to match the most efficient species under specific conditions.展开更多

The antioxidant activity of their ethanolic extracts, as well as their effects on the oxidation of edible corn oil during accelerated ageing, was studied. Maceration of taxonomically identified commercial vegetable samples, previously peeled and thinly sliced, was carried out at ambient temperature, out of direct light, with occasional agitation and ultrasound, employing 95% ethyl alcohol as the extraction solvent, allowing them to stand for 7 days. The total polyphenolic contents were determined on the filtrated extracts using the Folin-Ciocalteau method. The antioxidant activity was evaluated on emulsions of ethanolic extracts of onion prepared in edible commercial corn oil, using sorbitan monooleate as emulsifying agent. The peroxide values were analyzed using the iodometric method;oxidation induction times were obtained from the peroxide evolution graphs, using the tangent method. Oil samples emulsified with ethanolic onion extracts showed an extension of the induction period. A 7 day ageing study at 45℃ was additionally performed to determine the conjugated dienes on pure commercial corn oil and its emulsions by visible spectrophotometry. The spectral analysis showed an increase of the measured absorbances in oil samples without additives and no change for the oils emulsified with onion extract. An increasing of diene values was observed for corn oil without additives during ageing;no changes in the value were observed in oils emulsified with onion extracts.展开更多

The use of farmlands for food production and industrial purposes goes beyond the carrying capacity of the environment. The study determined the applicability of Vertical Farming using Hydroponic Technology to onion production in Nueva Ecija, Philippines. The country is known as the onion capital of Southeast Asia. The study measured the technology’s sustainability and acceptability to onion farmers. By using experimental method, interview, and Focused Group Discussions (FGD), the study established its viability. Three phases of field experiments were conducted in August 2016, May 2017 and July 2017 using the Vertical Farming and Hydroponics Technology and Single Factor Analysis of Variance. The results showed that there is significant difference in the growth of onion bulb per week and the suitability and comparability of the technology to conventional farming. The study concluded that the VFH technology is acceptable to most onion farmers except the aspect of the cost of initial investment which requires government subsidy for the ordinary onion grower to avail of this new and sustainable technology in onion production.展开更多

An inappropriate diet is known to enhance the risk for acute thrombotic events, and a regular diet with proven antithrombotic effects might be a beneficial way to prevent disease. The present study was undertaken as part of a series of in-vestigations to examine various vegetables and fruits for antithrombotic activity, and to add to the previously reported data on different onion varieties produced in the northern part of Japan (Hokkaido). For this purpose, a sophisticated method to assess shear-induced platelet reac-tivity/thrombolysis in vitro (The Global Throm-bosis Test, GTT) was used to screen 5 different varieties of onion produced in the middle part of Japan (Awaji Island). The different onion varie-ties demonstrated a variable effect on thrombo-sis, and one particular variety, designated ONA-03, appeared to exert an antithrombotic effect. Another variety, ONA-01, appeared to have prothrombotic activity by inhibiting spon-taneous thrombolytic activity. The especially effective variety was further investigated using an in vivo, laser-induced thrombosis model in mice. The heat stable antithrombotic activity in vitro and in vivo was demonstrated to be due to antiplatelet activity. The present findings added to the list of antithrombotic fruits and vegeta-bles.展开更多

Compared to the uncoated area, red shifts of 0.5-2 cm^(-1) and of 5-9 cm^(-1) for the G and D peaks, respectively, were detected for the gold-coated area, which was due to the coupling of the plasmons and the phonons of the samples.

文摘Microbial counts (total aerobic psychrotrophic count (TPC), lactic acid bacteria (LAB), coliforms, pseudomonads, yeasts) and sensory properties of sliced onions stored at different temperatures and air compositions were investigated. The initial microbial counts (N0) of five microorganisms strains only showed a little correlation, and the maximum microbial counts (Nmax) showed no obvious correlation with shelf life except for LAB and yeasts.
文摘Intercropping has been seen as an advantageous strategy in sustainable agriculture. Knowledge of competitive interactions between component crops can have several applications in sustainable agricultural as it helps to match the most efficient species under specific conditions.
文摘The content of polyphenolic in commercial onions has been determined. An increasing of diene values was observed for corn oil without additives during ageing;no changes in the value were observed in oils emulsified with onion extracts.
文摘The development of new technology for food production is essential to sustain man’s needs for survival. The study concluded that the VFH technology is acceptable to most onion farmers except the aspect of the cost of initial investment which requires government subsidy for the ordinary onion grower to avail of this new and sustainable technology in onion production.
文摘The prevention of arterial thrombotic disease has a high priority in developed countries. The present findings added to the list of antithrombotic fruits and vegeta-bles.
