Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)are typical persistent organic pollutants(POPs)that are commonly found in the environment. They are carcinogenic, teratogenic, mutagenic and biodegradable obviously. In this paper, the modified mussel shells were used to adsorb and remove anthracene. The results show that the adsorption removal rate of the mussel shells was higher after calcination at 600℃.5%H 3PO 4 solution was more suitable for shell treatment than 3 mol/L ZnCl 2 solution. As the dosage of the modified shells was 0.5 g/L,the adsorption reached a stable state, and the removal rate of PAHs was about 69.44%;the adsorption efficiency rose with the increase of time.It can be seen that as a new and cheap biological adsorbent, the modified shells can be used to remove PAHs from wastewater. 展开更多

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)are one of the most important groups in oil,and re sponsible for major toxic and/or carcinogenic impact on humans and wildlife. It is important to understand the behavior of PAHs in marine environment after an oil-spill incident. However, interaction between petroleum PAHs and microbial communities in a marine environment remains unclear. Therefore,a series of mesocosm experiments were conducted.in which water-accommodated fraction(WAF)of oil was generated to simulate an oil-spill scenario and to analyze the transport and behavior of marine oil spill containing PAHs with and without dispersants. Results indicate that the application of dispersant could increase the concentration of total PAHs in water column due mainly to significant increase in the concentration of highmolecular weight(HMW)PAHs at a lower removal rate.At the end of the 7-day experiment, significant amount of HMW PAHs were accumulated in sediment. In general, the application of dispersant did not increase the sediment uptake of PAHs but increased the PAHs concentration in water column. 展开更多

Coriander(Coriandrum sativum L.)is recognized for its antioxidant property,as a kind of natural phenolic-rich ingredient.Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)present a class of heat-driven hazards in foods, especially the processed meat.In this study, the effect of coriander root and leaf extract on the formation and inhibition of PAH8 in roasted duck wings was firstly investigated.Coriander root extract(CRE)and coriander leaf extract(CLE)with five concentration groups(200,400,600,800,1000 mg/L)were prepared respectively to marinate the duck wings.CRE marinade exhibited greater inhibitory effect on PAH8 formation in roasted duck wings that ranged from 65.0%-87.4%.The electron spin resonance study indicated a significantly positive correlation between PAH8 and free radical level, suggesting the participation of radicals in PAHs formation. Also,it was speculated that the inhibitory effect on PAH8 was related to the phenolic compounds identified in coriander marinades.CRE made greater inhibitory effect on the formation of PAH8 and could be considered as a kind of natural source to mitigate PAHs in heat-processed meat products. 展开更多

Low-carbon process for resource utilization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)in zeolitecatalyzed processes, geared to carbon neutrality-a prominent trend throughout human activities, has been bottlenecked by the lack of a complete mechanistic understanding of coking and decoking chemistry, involving the speciation and molecular evolution of PAHs,the plethora of which causes catalyst deactivation and forces regeneration, rendering significant CO_(2) emission.Herein,by exploiting the high-resolution matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry(MALDI FT-ICR MS),we unveil the missing fingerprints of the mechanistic pathways for both formation and decomposition of cross-linked cage-passing PAHs for SAPO-34-catalyzed,industrially relevant methanol-to-olefins(MTO)as a model reaction.Notable is the molecule-resolved symmetrical signature:their speciation originates exclusively from the direct coupling of in-cage hydrocarbon pool(HCP)species, whereas water-promoted decomposition of cage-passing PAHs initiates with selective cracking of inter-cage local structures at 8-rings followed by deep aromatic steam reforming.Molecular deciphering the reversibly dynamic evolution trajectory(fate)of full-spectrum aromatic hydrocarbons and fulfilling the real-time quantitative carbon resource footprints advance the fundamental knowledge of deactivation and regeneration phenomena(decay and recovery motifs of autocatalysis)and disclose the underlying mechanisms of especially the chemistry of coking and decoking in zeolite catalysis. The positive yet divergent roles of water in these two processes are disentangled. These unprecedented insights ultimately lead us to a steam regeneration strategy with valuable CO and H_(2) as main products, negligible CO_(2) emission in steam reforming and full catalyst activity recovery, which further proves feasible in other important chemical processes, promising to be a sustainable and potent approach that contributes to carbon-neutral chemical industry. 展开更多

The knowledge of the existence, distribution and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(SPAHs)in wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs)was vital for reducing their concentrations entering the aquatic environment. The concentrations of 13 SPAHs and 16 PAHs were all determined in a WWTP with styrene butadiene rubber(SBR)in partnership with the moving bed biofilm reactor(MBBR)process.SPAHs presented a higher concentration lever than PAHs in nearly all samples. The total removal efficiencies of PAHs and SPAHs ranged from 64.0%to 71.36%and 78.4%to 79.7%,respectively.The total yearly loads of PAHs(43.0 kg)and SPAHs(73.0 kg)were mainly reduced by the primary and SBR/MBBR biological treatment stages. The tertiary treatment stage had a minor contribution to target compounds removal.According to a synthesis and improvement fate model,we found that the dominant processes changed as the chemical octanol water partition coefficient(K_(ow))increased.But the seasonal variations of experimental removal efficiencies were more obvious than that of predicted data.In the primary sedimentation tank, dissolution in the aqueous phase and sorption to sludge/particulate matter were controlling processes for the removal of PAHs and SPAHs.The sorption to sludge and biodegradation were the principal removal mechanisms during the SBR/MBBR biological treatment process. The contribution of volatilization to removal was always insignificant.Furthermore, the basic physicochemical properties and operating parameters influenced the fate of PAHs and SPAHs in the WWTP. 展开更多

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are strongly associated with agricultural, residential, transportation, industrial and petroleum activities. In this study, the presence of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) was investigated in sediments of the ivory coastal zone (Toukouzou Hozalem-Assinie). The main objectives of this study were to determine the abundance and to predict the source of PAHs in the sediments. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to analyze sixteen priority PAHs. Total PAHs concentrations were from 1.31 to 3992.68 mg/kg in sediment with an average concentration of (307.54 ± 16.10) mg/kg. Among all PAHs, Naphthalene (Nap = 332.72 mg/kg) and Phenanthrene (Phe = 41.75 mg/kg) were found in the highest concentration, whereas Benzo (k) Fluoranthene was found in the least concentration in the range of 0 - 0.85 mg/kg (mean 0.24 mg/kg). Bassam-Modeste Lagune (BML) sampling site was the site with the highest concentration of total PAHs (all 16 PAHs) compared to the others due to their location in a highly populated estuary area that receives commercial, tourism, port, petroleum and heavy industrial activities. Diagnostic ratios were used to determine the sources of PAHs and suggested that the PAH profile in the sediments was dominated by 2 and 3 ring PAHs. The patterns of PAH compounds in sediment indicated that contamination is from mixed sources, with a strong indication of petrogenic contamination potentially from spills of fuel, oil and industrial activities. 展开更多

Slurry-phase hydrogenation technology is the frontier topic in the efficient conversion of heavy oils into light fractions around the world.Developing highly active dispersed MoS_(2) catalysts is the major obstacle to realize the industrial application of upgrading heavy oils.In this work, both top-down ball-milling method and bottom-up hydrothermal method were designed to synthesize MoS_(2) catalysts with controllable layer structures. The stacking layers and lateral sizes for micro-scaled MoS_(2) catalysts by ball-milling method can be reduced to their limits and stabilize at 6~8 layers and lateral size of ca.30 nm.The more flexible bottom-up hydrothermal method can construct MoS_(2) catalysts with much smaller lateral sizes and fewer stacking layers,especially,MoS_(2) catalyst fabricated with ammonium tetrathiomolybdate as Mo and S precursor possesses average stacking layers of 2 and lateral size of 5 ~ 10 nm.Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons anthracene, phenanthrene and naphthalene were used as model compounds of heavy oils to investigate the catalytic hydrogenation performance of designed MoS_(2) catalysts. The catalytic activities of MoS_(2) catalysts can be well correlated with their stacking layers and lateral size. The edges of top and bottom S-Mo-S atomic layers for MoS_(2) sheets, named rim sites, are positively correlated with the exposure of active sites for catalytic hydrogenation of PAHs.The highest catalytic activity of MoS_(2) catalyst results from its layer structures of 100% rim sites and the smallest lateral size of5 ~ 10 nm,which is beneficial to expose maximum active sites for catalytic hydrogenation reactions. This work can guide us to design the highly active hydrogenation catalysts, and promote the industrial application of upgrading heavy oils. 展开更多

An efficient and environment-friendly method for simultaneous determination of 13 typical derivatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon(PAH)in petroleum-polluted soil with nitro-,oxy-and alkylfunctional group was developed using supercritical fluid extraction(SFE)followed by ultra-high performance supercritical fluid chromatography(UHPSFC).Parameters of UHPSFC,including type of stationary phase and mobile phase modifiers, gradient elution process, backpressure, column temperature, and the flow rate of mobile phase, were systematically optimized, achieving a fast separation within4.2 min.Limits of detection(LOD)were 0.005-0.1μg mL^(-1)or 0.1-2.0 ng g^(-1),respectively,with a good repeatability(RSD<5.0%).Before UHPSFC-PDA analysis, the PAH-derivatives in soil samples were effectively enriched in 15.0 min using SFE with an online carbon nanotubes(CNTs)collection trap. The soil samples were analyzed by the proposed method and the results were verified by GC-MS.Thus,SFE equipped with an online CNTs trap followed by UHPSFC-PDA analysis, which only consumed about2.0 mL organic solvent for a whole run,has been demonstrated to be an efficient way for screening and quantitative analysis of trace-level PAH-derivatives in soil samples. 展开更多

To realize the fast and accurate quantitative analysis of the mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs),surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS)coupled with multivariate calibrations were employed. In this study, three kinds of calibration algorithms were used to quantitative analysis of the mixture of naphthalene(Nap),phenanthrene(Phe),and pyrene(Pyr).Firstly, partial least squares(PLS)algorithm was used to select characteristic variables, then the global search capability of genetic algorithm(GA)was used for the determining of the initial weights and thresholds of back propagation(BP)neural network so that local minima was avoided. The PLS-GA-BP model exhibited superiority to quantify PAHs mixture, which achieved R2=0.9975,0.9710,0.9643,ARE=10.07%,19.28%,16.72%and RMSE=13.10,5.40,5.10 nmol L−1 for Nap,Phe,Pyr(in the PAHs mixture)concentration prediction respectively. The forecast error,ARE and RMSE have been reduced more than 50%and 60%respectively compared with the whole spectral BP model. The study indicates that accurate quantitative spectroscopic analysis of the mixture of PAHs samples can be achieved through the combination of SERS technique and PLS-GA-BP algorithm. 展开更多

The presence of particulate and vapor PAHs, SO 2 and NOx and other interrelated conditions (temperature, traffic intensity and wind velocity) were investigated in the arterial street air of Hangzhou. The concentration of the nine PAHs in the air was mean to 11.7 μg/m 3, and the content of benzo(a)pyrene was up to 0.108 μg/m 3. The contents of PAHs in the sampling sites were in good relation to the traffic intensity, and would be also affected by the terrain and meteorological conditions. The occurrences of PAHs in ambient air were mainly affected by their physical, chemical characters and temperature. The three and four ring PAHs (MW≤228) mainly existed in the vapor phase and the five ring PAHs (MW>228) existed predominately in the particulate phase. The fraction of vapor PAHs in the total nine PAHs was 84.2% in the air of the sampling sites. In the morning and evening, the concentrations of PAHs in the arterial street air were higher than that on the noon and the diurnal variation of PAHs was similar to that of the traffic gas NOx. A conclusion would be drawn that the major source of PAHs in the arterial street air was the traffic. And the results indicated that 75% of BaP would come from traffic source and remaining 25% of BaP would come from non traffic source. 展开更多

The effect of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)on the stability of the hydrogenation catalyst for production of ultra-low sulfur diesel was studied in a pilot plant using Ni-Mo-W/γ-Al_(2)O_(3)catalyst.The mechanisms of catalyst deactivation were analyzed by the methods of elemental analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption,thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry(TG-MS)technology,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)and high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM).The results demonstrated that PAHs had little effect on the activity of catalyst at the beginning of operation, during which the reaction temperature was increased by only 1-4℃.However,the existence of PAHs significantly accelerated the deactivation of catalyst and weakened the stability of catalyst. This phenomenon could be explained by the reason that the catalyst deactivation is not only related to the formation of carbon deposit, but is also closely related to the loss of pore volume and the decrease of Ni-W-S phase ratio after adding PAHs. 展开更多

Hydrophobic organic compounds(HOCs)and heavy metals(HMs)are toxins that usually coexist in natural environments.Due to the differences in their properties,it remains challenging to simultaneously remove HMs and HOCs.In this study, the removal of phenanthrene(Phe)and lead(Pb)from co-contaminated soils by single rhamnolipid(RL)and mixed RL-sophorolipid(SL)biosurfactants were evaluated via soil column experiments.Biosurfactant micelle sizes were determined by dynamic light scattering, and the mechanisms of micelle solubilization were studied. The effects of biosurfactant concentrations,pH,washing agent salinity and the ageing time of polluted soils on Phe and Pb desorption efficiencies were also assessed. The substantial removal of Phe and Pb using mixed RL-SL systems, when molar fractions of RLs were 0.7,was attributed to large mixed micelle formation and lower sorption losses of these systems. The optimal pH value was 6.0,while Phe desorption was favoured at high RLs and low ionic strengths. However, the RLs concentration and ionic strength had no obvious influence on Pb removal. In addition, both Phe and Pb desorption decreased with increased ageing of the polluted soils.Combined RL-SL biosurfactants can be effective for simultaneously removing HOCs and HMs from polluted soils. 展开更多

Background:Lesion to the retinal pigment epithelium(RPE)is a crucial event in age-related macular degeneration(AMD)development.Although the pathogenesis of this complex disease is poorly understood, sunlight exposure and smoking are major environmental risk factors associated with AMD.High-energy visible blue light(HEV;400-500 nm)is the most energetic and potentially harmful solar wavelengths reaching adults retina. On the other hand,RPE cells can be exposed to a large range of pollutants from cigarette smoke, with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAH)being among the most toxic. Some PAH from cigarette smoke can absorb HEV light. This led us hypothesize that in RPE cells, the combination of PAH and HEV could synergize to exacerbate the stress caused by either factor alone. We thus investigate the combined effect of PAH and HEV light in RPE cells. Methods:Confluent RPE immortalized cells(ARPE19)were exposed to nanomolar concentrations of benzo[a]pyrene(BaP)or indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene(IcdP).While IcdP efficiently absorbs HEV wavelengths,BaP,the most studied PAH,does not significantly absorb HEV light and was used as a control.BaP or IcdP contaminated ARPE19 were then irradiated with increasing sub-lethal doses of HEV light(150-500 J/cm2)using a setup that mimics the light spectrum normally reaching the retina.Cytotoxicity, apoptosis and reactive oxygen species(ROS)generation were assessed in each condition. Results:In presence of low concentrations of IcdP,sub-lethal amounts of HEV light trigger,in a dose-dependent way,up to 70%of apoptotic cell death.Co-exposure to IcdP and HEV also leads to a synergistic ROS generation in ARPE19 cells, thus inducing oxidative stress.None of these effects were observed with BaP.Efficient inhibition of ROS production by specific antioxidants only decreases death by 20%in cells simultaneously exposed to both IcdP and HEV light. Conclusions:Low concentrations of IcdP synergize with HEV light to induce phototoxicity in ARPE19 cells. An increased oxidative stress results from the interaction between both agents and partially explains the enhanced HEV phototoxicity in IcdP contaminated ARPE19 cells. This suggests that another major mechanism is involved in the synergetic toxicity. For smokers, this synergy between HEV and PAH may accelerate RPE cells loss and contribute to their greater risk of developing AMD. 展开更多

In N’Djaména, the use and marketing of certain hydrocarbons does not comply with any standard in force or with regulations provided for this purpose. Their evaporation and unregulated release into the wild significantly affects the ecosystem. The present work consists in developing a method of extraction from sediments polluted by bio surfactant (rhamnolipid) assisted by microwaves. The goal here is to look for the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in polluted sediments. The rhamnolipid used consists of monorhamnolipids and di-rhamnolipids, its emulsion index is 64.66% and is composed of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids having carbon numbers ranging from 12 to 18. We used the microwave micellar extraction process. It was made by keeping the concentration values fixed at 0.15 g/L and the power at 400 W and more. We observed a positive interaction of the rhamnolipid concentration factors and the power of the microwave to obtain the optimal conditions at the time of 50 S, at the concentration of 0.16 g/L and at the power of 443 W for a rate of optimal extraction of 0.91%. Chromatographic analysis by GC-MS of the optimum extracts allowed us to identify twelve (12) C10 to C43 n-alkanes and eight (8) PAHs. It emerges from this analysis that the rhamnolipid extracts seven (7) Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in equivalent proportions while the tween 80 extracts only four (4) Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons with a high proportion (80.02%) of benzo [a] antracene. 展开更多

The present study is endeavored to study the oxidative stress and antioxidant response as well as the ultrastructural change of both liver and muscle tissues of Siganus rivulatus collected from polluted region (El-Mex Bay) and control region (Marsa Matrouh) to identify the significance of biomarkers. The results revealed that, El-Mex Bay was polluted by different types of chemicals including hydrocarbons comparing with the reference area (Matrouh area). Where, the concentration range of total hydrocarbons in sediment samples collected from Matrouh coast was 409.24 - 521.26 ng/g, dry weight, where as this range in sediment samples collected from El-MexBay was 4159.77 - 4589.81 ng/g, dry weight. In this context, the induction of antioxidant systems in fish collected from polluted area in response to oxidative stress should be considered as a clear indication of the presence of pollution and environmental health degradation. Also, The increase in lipid peroxidation was a useful indicator of the pollution load in the present study. The results suggest that chemical pollution is capable of inducing morphological alteration in liver offish collected from polluted area. The present study indicated that ultra-structural changes serveas biomarker of stress in aquatic environment. 展开更多

This research measured ambient levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) surrounding a petrochemical complex on the island of Curacao using passive air sampling. In addition, source elucidation of PAHs was conducted using concentration profiles, distribution profiles, binary diagnostic ratios and factor analysis. Passive air samplers with polyurethane foam collection disks (PAS-PUFs) were deployed in 2011 (n = 43) and in 2014 (n = 30) to evaluate the extent of the emission plume as well as spatial and temporal differences in ambient PAH concentrations. In general, ambient PAH concentrations in Curacao were consistent with other urban and industrialized regions of the world;however, the levels measured downwind of Isla Refineriá petrochemical complex were among some of the highest reported ambient PAHs globally. Ambient PAH concentrations ranged from 1.2 to 790 ng/m3 in 2011 and 27 to 660 ng/m3 in 2014, demonstrating no temporal differences. However, significant spatial differences were detected between samples collected upwind and downwind of the petrochemical complex. Significantly higher ambient PAH concentrations were found in the samples collected downwind of the petrochemical complex compared to those upwind in 2014 展开更多
