Therefore, understanding the effects of NPBA on the deformation and damage evolution of the NEPE propellant is fundamental to material design and applications. This paper studies the uniaxial tensile and stress relaxation responses of the NEPE propellant with different amounts of NPBA. The damage evolution in terms of interface debonding is further investigated using a cohesive-zone model(CZM). Experimental results show that the initial modulus and strength of the NEPE propellant increase with the increasing amount of NPBA while the elongation decreases. Meanwhile, the relaxation rate slows down and a higher long-term equilibrium modulus is reached. Experimental and numerical analyses indicate that interface debonding and crack propagation along filler-matrix interface are the dominant damage mechanism for the samples with a low amount of NPBA, while damage localization and crack advancement through the matrix are predominant for the ones with a high amount of NPBA. Finally, crosslinking density tests and simulation results also show that the effect of the bonding agent is interfacial rather than due to the overall crosslinking density change of the binder.展开更多

Firstly, it helps to understand the mechanism and conditions of unwanted ignition inside charged propellant under accident stimulus.Secondly, evaluates the risk of a shell crevice in a solid rocket motor(SRM) under a falling or overturning scene. In the present study, an innovative visual crevice extrusion experiment is designed using a dropweight apparatus. The dynamic responses of NEPE propellant during extrusion loading, including compaction and compression, rapid shear flow into the crevice, stress concentration, and ignition reaction, have been firstly observed using a high-performance high-speed camera. The ignition reaction is observed in the triangular region of the NEPE propellant sample above the crevice when the drop weight velocity was 1.90 m/s. Based on the user material subroutine interface UMAT provided by finite element software LS-DYNA, a viscoelastic-plastic model and dual ignition criterion related to plastic shear dissipation are developed and applied to the local ignition response analysis under crevice extrusion conditions. The stress concentration occurs in the crevice location of the propellant sample, the shear stress is relatively large, the effective plastic work is relatively large, and the ignition reaction is easy to occur. When the sample thickness decreases from 5 mm to 2.5 mm, the shear stress increases from 22.3 MPa to 28.6 MPa, the critical value of effective plastic work required for ignition is shortened from 1280 μs to 730 μs, and the triangular area is easily triggering an ignition reaction. The propellant sample with a small thickness is more likely to stress concentration, resulting in large shear stress and effective work, triggering an ignition reaction.展开更多

Molecular simulations were conducted of the reaction that generates NO_(2), the autocatalytic and aging reaction triggered by the NO_(2), and the nitrogen dioxide absorption reaction of the stabilizers during the propellent stabilization process. These simulations were derived using the transition-state theory(TST)and variational transition-state theory(VTST). The simulation results suggested that the stabilization of the NEPE propellant consisted of three stages. First, heat and NO_(2) were generated during the denitrification reaction of nitroglycerine(NG) and 1,2,4-butanetriol trinitrate(BTTN) in the NEPE propellant.Second, nitroso products were generated by the reactions of N-Methyl-4-nitroaniline(MNA) and 2-nitrodiphenylamine(2NDPA) with NO_(2). Third, the stabilizers were exhausted and the autocatalytic reaction of NG and BTTN and the aging reaction of polyethylene glycol(PEG) were triggered by the heat and NO_(2)generated in the first stage. By comparing the energy barriers of the various reactions, it was found that the NO_(2)generated from the denitrification reaction significantly reduced the reaction energy barrier to 105.56-126.32 kJ/mol, also increased the reaction rate constant, and decreased the thermal stability and energetic properties of the NEPE propellant. In addition, the NO_(2)also weakened the mechanical properties of the NEPE propellant by attacking the-CH2groups and the O atoms in the PEG molecular chain. The energy barriers of the reactions of MNA and 2NDPA with NO_(2)(94.61-133.61 k J/mol) were lower than those of the autocatalytic and decomposition reactions of NG, BTTN, and the aging reactions of PEG(160.30-279.46 kJ/mol). This indicated that, by eliminating NO_(2), the stabilizer in the NEPE propellant can effectively prevent NO_(2)from reacting with the NG, BTTN, and PEG in the NEPE propellant. Consequently, this would help maintain the energy and mechanical properties of the NEPE propellant, thereby improving its thermal stability.展开更多

However, the diffusion coefficient calculated by molecular dynamics(MD) simulation is 6 orders of magnitude larger than the experimental values. Meanwhile, few simple and comprehensive theoretical models can explain the phenomenon and accurately predict the concentration distribution of the propellant. Herein, an onion model combining with MD simulation and finite element method of diffusion in propellants is introduced to bridge the gap between the experiments and simulations, and correctly predict the concentration distribution of deterrent. Furthermore, a new time scale is found to characterize the diffusion process. Finally, the time-and position-depended concentration distributions of dibutyl phthalate in nitrocellulose are measured by Raman spectroscopy to verify the correctness of the onion model. This work not only provides guidance for the design of the deterrent, but could be also extended to the diffusion of small molecules in polymer with different crystallinity.展开更多

The reason to use ADN instead of AP in solid rocket propulsion is because of its harmless combustion products, along with its capacity to generate high specific impulse(Isp). ADN is fairly a new member in the solid oxidizer community and is considered under green energetic material(GEM). Application and feasible utilization of ADN as an oxidizer for composite solid propellants(CSP's) requires complete knowledge of its thermal decomposition processes along with its combustion behavior. A detailed overview on the physical and chemical properties, thermal decomposition, and combustion behavior of ADN and ADN based propellants has been discussed in this paper. Catalytic effect on thermal decomposition, combustion wave structure, and burning rate of ADN is also discussed.展开更多

These experiments were conducted through the use of a new uniaxial INSTRON testing machine, different new designed gripping apparatus and samples with different configurations. According to the test results, dynamic uniaxial tensile strength criterion of the propellant was directly constructed with the master curve of the uniaxial maximum tensile stress. Whereas, a new method was proposed to determine the dynamic uniaxial compressive strength of the propellant in this study. Then uniaxial compressive strength criterion of the propellant was constructed based on the related master curve. Moreover, it found that the uniaxial tensilecompressive strength ratio of the propellant is more sensitive to loading temperature under the test conditions. The value of this parameter is about 0.4 at room temperature, and it reduces to 0.2-0.3 at low temperatures. Finally, the theoretical biaxial strength criterion of HTPB propellant under dynamic loading was constructed with the unified strength theory, the uniaxial strength and the typical biaxial tensile strength. In addition, the theoretical limit lines of the principal stress plane for the propellant under dynamic loading at different temperatures were further plotted, and the scope of the limit line increases with decreasing temperature.展开更多

文摘The 2D sandwich model serves as a potent tool in exploring the influence of surface geometry on the combustion attributes of Ammonium perchlorate/Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene(AP/HTPB)propellant under rapid pressure decay. The thickness of the sandwich propellant is derived from slicing the 3D random particle packing,an approach that enables a more effective examination of the micro-flame structure.Comparative analysis of the predicted burning characteristics has been performed with experimental studies. The findings demonstrate a reasonable agreement, thereby validating the precision and soundness of the model.Based on the typical rapid depressurization environment of solid rocket motor(initial combustion pressure is 3 MPa and the maximum depressurization rate is 1000 MPa/s).A-type(a flatter surface),B-type(AP recesses from the combustion surface),and C-type(AP protrudes from the combustion surface)propellant combustion processes are numerically simulated.Upon comparison of the evolution of gas-phase flame between 0.1 and 1 ms,it is discerned that the flame strength and form created by the three sandwich models differ significantly at the beginning stage of depressurization, with the flame structures gradually becoming harmonized over time. Conclusions are drawn by comparison extinction times:the surface geometry plays a pivotal role in the combustion process, with AP protrusion favoring combustion the most.

文摘A submerged cavitation water jet(SCWJ)is an effective method to recycle solid propellant from obsolete solid engines by the breaking method.Solid propellant's breaking modes and mechanical process under SCWJ impact are unclear. This study aims to understand those impact breaking mechanisms. The hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene(HTPB)propellant was chosen as the research material, and a self-designed test system was used to conduct impact tests at four different working pressures. The high-speed camera characterized crack propagation, and the DIC method calculated strain change during the impact process.Besides, micro and macro fracture morphologies were characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM)and computed tomography(CT)scanning. The results reveal that the compressive strain concentration region locates right below the nozzle, and the shear strain region distributes symmetrically with the jet axis, which increases to 4% at first 16th ms,the compressive strain rises to 2% and 6% in the axial and transverse direction, respectively. The two tensile cracks formed first at the compression strain concentrate region, and there generate many shear cracks around the tensile cracks, and those shear cracks that develop and aggregate cause the cracks to become wider and cut through the tensile cracks, forming the tensile-shear cracks and the impact parts eventually fail. The HTPB propellant forms a breaking hole shaped conical after impact 10 s.The mass loss increases by 17 times at maximum, with the working pressure increasing by three times.Meanwhile, the damage value of the breaking hole remaining on the surface increases by 7.8 times while 2.9 times in the depth of the breaking hole. The breaking efficiency is closely affected by working pressures. The failure modes of HTPB impacted by SCWJ are classified as tensile crack-dominated and tensile-shear crack-dominated damage mechanisms.
文摘Smart materials, which exhibit shape memory behavior in response to external stimuli, have shown great potential for use in biomedical applications. In this study,an energetic composite was fabricated using a UV-assisted DIW 3D printing technique and a shape memory material(SMP)as the binder. This composite has the ability to reduce the impact of external factors and adjust gun propellant combustion behavior. The composition and 3D printing process were delineated, while the internal structure and shape memory performance of the composite material were studied. The energetic SMP composite exhibits an angle of reversal of 18 s at 70°,with a maximum elongation typically reaching up to 280% of the original length and a recovery length of approximately 105%during ten cycles.Additionally, thermal decomposition and combustion behavior were also demonstrated for the energetic SMP composite.

文摘Appropriate drying process with optimized controlling of drying parameters plays a vital role in the improvement of the quality and performance of propellant products. However, few research on solvent transport dynamics within NC-based propellants was reported, and its effect on the evolution of mechanical properties was not interpreted yet. This study is conducted to gain a comprehensive understanding of hot-air drying for NC-based propellants and clarify the effect of temperature on solvent transport behavior and further the change of mechanical properties during drying. The drying kinetic curves show the drying time required is decreased but the steady solvent content is increased and the drying rate is obviously increased with the increase of hot-air temperatures, indicating hot-air temperatures have a significant effect on drying kinetics.A modified drying model was established, and results show it is more appropriate to describe solvent transport behavior within NC-based propellants. Moreover, two linear equations were established to exhibit the relationship between solvent content and its effect on the change of tensile properties, and the decrease of residual solvent content causes an obvious increase of tensile strength and tensile modulus of propellant products, indicating its mechanical properties can be partly improved by adjustment of residual solvent content. The outcomes can be used to clarify solvent transport mechanisms and optimize drying process parameters of double-based gun propellants.

文摘Conventional plasticizers deteriorate mechanical and viscoelastic properties of the propellants due to their migration upon aging and long-term storage, which affects reliability and safety properties during exploitation. To address this issue, conventional plasticizer, dioctyl adipate(DOA),is replaced by reactive one, castor oil(CO).In addition, three different types of HTPB were used to obtain propellants with designed viscoelastic and mechanical properties. The CO increased propellants viscosity, without a significant impact on the propellant processability, regardless to the type of prepolymer.Conversely, mechanical properties were different depending on the type of resin, which were further analyzed by gel permeation chromatography(GPC).Addition of CO formed a denser polymer network and shifted T_(g) to higher values, compared to the compositions with DOA.The tensile strength of CO-containing propellants was lower at +20℃ and +50℃ compared to the reference compositions, while the strain at maximum load and strain at break were significantly increased with pronounced plastic deformation, especially for samples at -30℃.The inclusion of CO in the propellants composition gives more room for adjusting a wide range of mechanical properties.

文摘In this reported study, the density functional theory(DFT) was used at the(U)B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level to investigate the stabilization process of the nitrate ester plasticized polyether propellant(NEPE). Consequently, this would help maintain the energy and mechanical properties of the NEPE propellant, thereby improving its thermal stability.
文摘Gradiently denitrated gun propellant(GDGP)prepared by a“gradient denitration”strategy is obviously superior in progressive burning performance to the traditional deterred gun propellant.Currently, the preparation of GDGP employed a tedious two-step method involving organic solvents, which hinders the large-scale preparation of GDGP.In this paper,GDGP was successfully prepared via a novelty and environmentally friendly one-step method. The obtained samples were characterized by FT-IR,Raman,SEM and XPS.The results showed that the content of nitrate groups gradiently increased from the surface to the core in the surface layer of GDGP and the surface layer of GDGP exhibited a higher compaction than that of raw gun propellant, with a well-preserved nitrocellulose structure. The denitration process enabled the propellant surface with regressive energy density and good progressive burning performance,as confirmed by oxygen bomb and closed bomb test.At the same time, the effects of different solvents on the component loss of propellant were compared. The result showed that water caused the least component loss. Finally, the stability of GDGP was confirmed by methyl-violet test. This work not only provided environmentally friendly, simple and economic preparation of GDGP,but also confirmed the stability of GDGP prepared by this method.

文摘Concentration distribution of the deterrent in single-base propellant during the process of firing plays an important role in the ballistic properties of gun propellant in weapons. This work not only provides guidance for the design of the deterrent, but could be also extended to the diffusion of small molecules in polymer with different crystallinity.

文摘Aluminum(Al) particles are commonly added to energetic materials including propellants, explosives and pyrotechnics to increase the overall energy density of the composite, but aluminum agglomeration on the combustion surface may lower the combustion efficiency of propellants, resulting in a loss in twophase flow. Therefore,it is necessary to understand the agglomeration mechanism of aluminum particles on the combustion surface. In this paper,a high-pressure sealed combustion chamber is constructed, and high-speed camera is used to capture the whole process of aluminum accumulation, aggregation and agglomeration on the combustion surface, and the secondary agglomeration process near the combustion surface. The microscopic morphology and chemical composition of the condensed combustion products(CCPs) are then studied by using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive(SEM-EDS) method. Results show that there are three main types of condensed combustion products:small smoke oxide particles oxidized by aluminum vapor, usually less than 1 μm;typical agglomerates formed by the combustion of aluminum agglomerates;carbonized agglomerates that are widely distributed, usually formed by irregular movements of aluminum agglomerates. The particle size of condensed combustion products is measured by laser particle size meter. As the pressure increases from 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa in nitrogen, the mass average particle size of aluminum agglomerates decreases by 49.7%.As the ambient gas is changed from 0.5 MPa nitrogen to 0.5 MPa air,the mass average particle size of aluminum agglomerates decreases by 67.3%.Results show that as the ambient pressure increases, the higher oxygen content can improve combustion efficiency and reduce the average agglomeration size of aluminum particles.

文摘Drying is a complicated physical process which involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the removal of solvents inside propellants.Inappropriate drying techniques may result in the formation of a hard skin layer near the surface to block the free access of most solvent through for long stick propellants with large web thickness, which lead to lower drying efficiency and worse drying quality. This study aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of drying process and clarify the mechanism of the blocked layer near the propellant surface.A new three-dimensional coupled heat and mass transfer(3D-CHMT)model was successfully developed under transient conditions. The drying experiment results show that the 3DCHMT model could be applied to describe the drying process well since the relative error of the content of solvent between simulation and experiment values is only 5.5%.The solvent behavior simulation demonstrates that the mass transfer process can be divided into super-fast(SF)and subsequent minorfast(MF)stages, and the SF stage is vital to the prevention of the blocked layer against the free access for solvent molecules inside propellant grains. The effective solvent diffusion coefficient(Deff)of the propellant surface initially increases from 3.4×10^(-6)to 5.3×10^(-6)m^(2)/s as the temperature increases, and then decreases to 4.1×10^(-8)m^(2)/s at 60-100 min.The value of Deffof surface between 0-1.4 mm has a unique trend of change compared with other regions, and it is much lower than that of the internal at100 min under simulation conditions.Meanwhile, the temperature of the propellant surface increases rapidly at the SF stage(0-100 min)and then very slowly thereafter. Both the evolution of Deffand temperature distribution demonstrate that the blocked layer near the propellant surface has been formed in the time period of approximately 0-100 min and its thickness is about 1.4 mm.To mitigate the formation of blocked layer and improve its drying quality of finial propellant products effectively,it should be initially dried at lower drying temperature(30-40℃)in 0-100 min and then dried at higher drying temperature(50-60℃)to reduce drying time for later drying process in double base gun propellants. The present results can provide theoretical guidance for drying process and optimization of drying parameters for long stick propellants with large web thickness.

文摘The study of high-energy and low-vulnerability propellants is important for the power performance and safety of solid propellant rocket motors. The modified split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)tests are performed on two kinds of propellant with different crosslinking density to study the dynamic mechanical responses and damage-ignition mechanism.SHPB apparatus is equipped with a highperformance infrared camera and high-speed camera to capture the deformation,damage-ignition feature and temperature evolution images in the impact process. The results suggested that the mechanical responses and damage-ignition mechanism of the propellants were affected by the strain rates and crosslinking density. The damage-ignition degree is more intense and the reaction occurs earlier with the increase of strain rates. For propellant 1 with higher crosslinking density, the critical ignition strain rate is 4500 s^(-1).Two kinds of propellants show different ignition mechanism,i.e.crack generation, propagation and final fracture for propellant 1 while viscous shear flow for propellant 2.Meanwhile,the SEM images also reveal the difference of damage-ignition mechanism of the two kinds of propellants. Finally, the ignition mechanism under different strain rates and critical ignition strain rate of propellants are further explained by the theoretical calculation of temperature variations.
文摘Comments are given on the various physical definitions of the force constant of propellant. As there are more or less defects in these definitions, two new definitions are presented to reflect the physical essence of propellant force more perfectly and could well compatible with the mathematical expression.
文摘Ammonium dinitramide [NH4 N(NO_2)2, ADN] is considered as a possible replacement for ammonium perchlorate(AP) in nearly all kind of solid rocket propulsions in the coming future. Catalytic effect on thermal decomposition, combustion wave structure, and burning rate of ADN is also discussed.

文摘Batch preparation of nano-HMX was achieved via a mechanical trituration method. The morphology and particle size of nano-HMX and raw RDX were characterized using SEM. Then nano-HMX was used in a formulation of composite modified double base propellant containing RDX. The method is to use nanoHMX to replace the RDX in the formulation by 10% gradually with the total mass content of RDX and HMX unchanged. The burning rate, mechanical sensitivity and mechanical property of propellant strands with different mass content of nano-HMX were tested. The results indicate that the 30% content of nanoHMX has the best comprehensive performance which can be used as an improvement of the existing formula. A possible mechanism of action was discussed.

文摘Based on the dynamic loading(1-100 s^(-1)) experiments under different temperatures(223-298 K) and stress states, uniaxial and biaxial strength criterion of a Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene(HTPB)based composite solid propellant were further investigated. In addition, the theoretical limit lines of the principal stress plane for the propellant under dynamic loading at different temperatures were further plotted, and the scope of the limit line increases with decreasing temperature.
