A system reliability estimation method for spatial jacket platforms is developed in this paper. The jacket platform is modeled into three-dimensional assembly of spatial beam and plate elements in Finite Element Method (FEM). The limit failure states correspond to collapse of a series of structural members which are identified by engineering design criteria. In this paper the following aspects are taken into account: the punching shear and buckling failures in member failure modes for the tubular joints and tubular columns respectively; incremental loading approach for establishment of the safety margin equations of system failure; the algorithm of enumerating significant failure modes for the structural systems and other concepts, such as the false failure mode and the virtual limit state. The final work is devoted to the reliability analysis for a practical jacket platform presently put into operation on the Bohai Sea. The computed results shows that method suggested in this paper is feasible and effective for the evaluation of the system reliability of offshore platforms. 展开更多

Matrix description of differential relations of moment functions in structural reliability sensitivity analysis

In a structural system reliability analysis that lacks probabilistic information, calculating the numerical characteristics of the state functions, especially the first four moments of the state functions, is necessary. Based on that, the structural system reliability is analyzed with a fourth-order moment method. The reliability sensitivity is required to conduct the differential operation of the numerical characteristic functions. A reliability sensitivity analysis formula is then derived in combination with the relation of the differential operation. Based on the matrix theory and Kronecker algebra, this paper systematically derives a matrix expression of the first four moments of the state functions, and establishes the matrix relation between the first four moments of the state functions and those of the basic random variables. On this basis, a differential operation formula of the first four moments of the state functions is further derived against the first four moments of the basic random variables. The vector relation between the state functions and the multidimensional basic random variables is described by means of the matrix operation to extend the operation method. Finally, a concise and intuitive formula is obtained to explore the inherent essential relation between the numerical characteristics of the state functions and those of the basic random variables, leading to a universal equation for the two kinds of numerical characteristics. 展开更多

To verify the reliability of the optimized structure, the parameters of rolling mill and parts were analyzed by finite element,including the maximum stress,strain and maximum displacement.The results showed that the maximum displacement of the mill frame and the bearing chock was 0. 049 mm,and the maximum stress was2. 659 MPa. The maximum stress of the mill was 3. 181 MPa. There were no obviously elastic deformation and plastic deformation,which satisfied the structural requirements. In this paper, the fuzzy-set-based structural possibility theory is investigated, and this theory can be used to deal with the subjective uncertainties in the design of engineering structures. Furthermore, a comprehensive model of structural safety assessment, which can merge subjective uncertainties with objective uncertainties, is presented. In this model, the fuzziness of stress-strength inference model, safety margin functions of single or multiple limit-state, structural failure state and the final assessment result are taken into account. This continuous model can be transformed into an equivalent model of probability-based and solved by the present structural reliability analysis method and parallel algorithm. During the life of an offshore structure, its structural strength declines due to various kinds of damages related to the time factor. In this paper, four major kinds of damages, including damages caused by fatigue, dent, corrosion and marine life, are discussed. Based on these analyses, formulas for the evaluation of the damaged structure reliability are derived. Furthermore the computer program ISM for the analysis of structural reliability is developed by the use of Advanced First Order Second Moment method and Monte-Carlo Importance Sampling method. The reliability of a turbular joint and a beam are studied as numerical examples. The results show that the theory and the analysis method given in this paper are reasonable and effective. 展开更多

The structural response of a single-layer reticulated dome to external explosions is shaped by many variables,and the associated uncertainties imply non-deterministic results.Existing deterministic methods for predicting the consequences of specific explosions do not account for these uncertainties.Therefore,the impact of the uncertainties associated with these input variables on the structures’response needs to be studied and quantified.In this study,a parametric uncertainty analysis was conducted first.Then,local and global sensitivity analyses were carried out to identify the drivers of the structural dynamic response.A probabilistic structural response model was established based on sensitive variables and a reasonable sample size.Furthermore,some deterministic empirical methods for explosion-resistance design,including the plane blast load model of CONWEP,the curved blast load model under the 50%assurance level,and the 20%mass-increased method,were used for evaluating their reliability.The results of the analyses revealed that the structural response of a single-layer reticulated dome to an external blast loading is lognormally distributed.Evidently,the MB0.5 method based on the curved reflector load model yielded results with a relatively stable assurance rate and reliability,but CONWEP did not;thus,the 1.2MB0.5 method can be used for making high-confidence simple predictions.In addition,the results indicated that the structural response is very sensitive to the explosion parameters.Based on these results,it is suggested that for explosion proofing,setting up a defensive barrier is more effective than structural strengthening. 展开更多

Fatigue cracks and fatigue damage have been important issues for ships and offshore structures for a long time.However,in the last decade,with the introduction of higher tensile steel in hull structures and increasingly large ship dimensions,the greater attention should be paid to fatigue problems.Most research focuses on how to more easily access the fatigue strength of ships.Also,the major classification societies have already released their fatigue assessment notes.However,due to the complexity of factors influencing fatigue performances,such as wave load and pressure from cargo,the combination of different stress components,stress on concentration of local structure details,means stress,and the corrosive environments,there are different specifications with varying classification societies,leading to the different results from different fatigue assessment methods.This paper established the Det Norske Veritas(DNV) classification notes "fatigue assessment of ship structures" that explains the process of fatigue assessment and simplified methods.Finally,a fatigue analysis was performed by use data of a real ship and the reliability of the result was assessed. 展开更多

Taking the steady motion status as a starting point,according to the modeling of actual state of theoretical analysis,a predigested model of supercavity vehicle was established,and relationship expressions of these angles were obtained when the movement of supercavity vehicle was stable.A theoretical analysis on the stability of underwater high-speed movement in the movement simulation program was conducted and the simulation results were given.Then the force status of the supercavity vehicle was elicited from the results.The finite element analysis was carried out based on the stability at all angles obtained from simulation results.Taking a pilot model as example,the Monte Carlo method was adopting to analyze the reliability with the given state of force and displacement.The result indicates that this method is feasible. 展开更多

Multiple failure modes tend to be identified in the reliability analysis of a redundant truss structure.This identification process involves updating the model for identifying the next potential failure members.Herein we intend to update the finite element model automatically in the identification process of failure modes and further perform the system reliability analysis efficiently.This study presents a framework that is implemented through the joint simulation of MATLAB and APDL and consists of three parts:reliability index of a single member,identification of dominant failure modes,and system-level reliability analysis for system reliability analysis of truss structures.Firstly,RSM(response surface method)combines with a constrained optimization model to calculate the reliability indices ofmembers.Then theβ-unzipping method is adopted to identify the dominant failuremodes,and the system function in MATLAB,as well as the EKILL command in APDL,is used to facilitate the automatic update of the finite element model and realize load-redistribution.Besides,the differential equivalence recursion algorithmis performed to approximate the reliability indices of failuremodes efficiently and accurately.Eventually,the PNET(probabilistic network evaluation technique)is used to calculate the joint failure probability as well as the system reliability index.Two illustrative examples demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed system reliability analysis framework through comparison with corresponding references. 展开更多

The fatigue life of aeroengine turbine disc presents great dispersion due to the randomness of the basic variables,such as applied load,working temperature,geometrical dimensions and material properties.In order to ameliorate reliability analysis efficiency without loss of reliability,the distributed collaborative response surface method(DCRSM) was proposed,and its basic theories were established in this work.Considering the failure dependency among the failure modes,the distributed response surface was constructed to establish the relationship between the failure mode and the relevant random variables.Then,the failure modes were considered as the random variables of system response to obtain the distributed collaborative response surface model based on structure failure criterion.Finally,the given turbine disc structure was employed to illustrate the feasibility and validity of the presented method.Through the comparison of DCRSM,Monte Carlo method(MCM) and the traditional response surface method(RSM),the results show that the computational precision for DCRSM is more consistent with MCM than RSM,while DCRSM needs far less computing time than MCM and RSM under the same simulation conditions.Thus,DCRSM is demonstrated to be a feasible and valid approach for improving the computational efficiency of reliability analysis for aeroengine turbine disc fatigue life with multiple random variables,and has great potential value for the complicated mechanical structure with multi-component and multi-failure mode. 展开更多

We use themethod of max-flow and min-cut theorem, give four theorems to reduce 3-state device network withlink-capacity reliability problems to 2-state problems. A method of reliability analysis based on a direct strength calculation employing the von Mises stress failure criterion is presented here. The short term strain distributions of ship hull structural components are identified through the statistical analysis of the wave-induced strain history and the long term distributions by the weighted summation of the short term strain distributions. The wave-induced long term strain distribution is combined with the still water strain. The extreme strain distribution of the response strain is obtained by statistical analysis of the combined strains. The limit state function of the reliability analysis is based on the von Mises stress failure criterion, including the related uncertainties due to the quality of the material and model uncertainty. The reliability index is calculated using FORM and sensitivity analysis of each variable that has effects on the reliability is also discussed. 展开更多

Traditional structural reliability analysis methods adopt precise probabilities to quantify uncertainties and they are suitable for systems with sufficient statistical data.However,the problem of insufficient data is often encountered in practical engineering.Thus,structural reliability analysis methods under insufficient data have caught more and more attentions in recent years and a lot of nonprobabilistic reliability analysis methods are put forward to deal with the problem of insufficient data.Non-probabilistic structural reliability analysis methods based on fuzzy set,Dempster-Shafer theory,interval analysis and other theories have got a lot of achievements both in theoretical and practical aspects and they have been successfully applied in structural reliability analysis of largescale complex systems with small samples and few statistical data.In addition to non-probabilistic structural reliability analysis methods,structural reliability analysis based on imprecise probability theory is a new method proposed in recent years.Study on structural reliability analysis using imprecise probability theory is still at the start stage,thus the generalization of imprecise structural reliability model is very important.In this paper,the imprecise probability was developed as an effective way to handle uncertainties,the detailed procedures of imprecise structural reliability analysis was introduced,and several specific imprecise structural reliability models which are most effective for engineering systems were given.At last,an engineering example of a cantilever beam was given to illustrate the effectiveness of the method emphasized here.By comparing with interval structural reliability analysis,the result obtained from imprecise structural reliability model is a little conservative than the one resulted from interval structural reliability analysis for imprecise structural reliability analysis model considers that the probability of each value is taken from an interval. 展开更多

Structural reliability is an important method to measure the safety performance of structures under the influence of uncertain factors.Traditional structural reliability analysis methods often convert the limit state function to the polynomial form to measure whether the structure is invalid.The uncertain parameters mainly exist in the form of intervals.This method requires a lot of calculation and is often difficult to achieve efficiently.In order to solve this problem,this paper proposes an interval variable multivariate polynomial algorithm based on Bernstein polynomials and evidence theory to solve the structural reliability problem with cognitive uncertainty.Based on the non-probabilistic reliability index method,the extreme value of the limit state function is obtained using the properties of Bernstein polynomials,thus avoiding the need for a lot of sampling to solve the reliability analysis problem.The method is applied to numerical examples and engineering applications such as experiments,and the results show that the method has higher computational efficiency and accuracy than the traditional linear approximation method,especially for some reliability problems with higher nonlinearity.Moreover,this method can effectively improve the reliability of results and reduce the cost of calculation in practical engineering problems. 展开更多
