Water film area and dust removal efficiency of string grilles:a theoretical analysis

Based onmultiphase flowtheory and capillary mechanics,the dimensionless bond number expression of the influence of string grille wire spacing on droplet spreading is derived.Taking a liquid film formed by spreading droplets based on Kelvin correlation,the Young-Laplace equation,and the Hagen-Poiseuille law,an equation for calculating the thickness and height of the liquid film is established with temperature,relative humidity and molar volume of liquid phase as independent variables.According to the theory of string grille filtration and dust removal,a dust removal efficiency calculation model covering the wet string grille wire group is constructed based on the liquid film thickness,height,wire diameter,water film area,and vortex shedding frequency.Finally,a theoretical analysis of the influence of water film area on the efficiency of wet string grille dust removal is carried out based on the spray pressure and the ratio of string grille wire distance to wire diameter.It is found that the effect of spray pressure on water film area and dust removal efficiency is more significant than the string grille wire distance diameter ratio.Moreover,the optimized combination of wet string grille wire distance diameter ratio 0.84,wind speed 3m/s and spray pressure 0.8 MPa is found,which could provide an important reference for engineering applications. 展开更多

Removal Effect of Precipitation on Atmospheric Particulate Matter (PM_(2.5) ) in Bengbu City

Based on the monitoring data of PM_(2.5) concentration in Bengbu Environmental Monitoring Station and precipitation observation data of Bengbu National Meteorological Observation Station from 2016 to 2019, the influence of precipitation on PM_(2.5) mass concentration in Bengbu City was analyzed. The results show that precipitation had a washing and removal effect on PM_(2.5) in the air, and the removal effect was related to precipitation level, precipitation intensity, precipitation duration and PM_(2.5) concentration. The removal effect of precipitation on PM_(2.5) increased with the increase of precipitation level, and the seasonal difference was obvious. Precipitation intensity was positively correlated with the removal effect of PM_(2.5) , but the average removal rate began to decline when precipitation intensity exceeded 10 mm. With the increase of precipitation intensity, the proportion of positive removal showed an overall upward trend, but there was a low-value area as precipitation intensity was 3-10 mm. Precipitation duration was also positively correlated with the removal effect of PM_(2.5) , and there was a low-value area when precipitation duration was 10-15 h. When PM_(2.5) concentration was low before the precipitation process began, the removal effect was not good, and the average removal rate was negative. Most of the monitoring data on the occurrence of antibiotics in sewage treatment plants(STPs)have been reported from Europe,North America and some countries in Northeast Asia,while very limited data can be found in Southeast Asian countries.As a pioneering research in Sri Lanka,we collected 24 h composite wastewater samples at the influent and effluent of two municipal STPs for consecutive 7 days to investigate occurrence,consumption and removal efficiency of seventeen antibiotics.The STP was located in Colombo and Hikkaduwa,respectively,representing two kinds of communities(i.e.local and tourists)in Sri Lanka.The targeted antibiotics were extracted by solid-phase extraction method and detected on an Agilent HPLCMSMS(1290/6470QQQ).Results illustrated that the majority of the antibiotics can be always detected from both STPs,except for chlorotetracycine(CTC),doxycycline(DOX)and florfenicol(FF).Fluoroquinolones(FQs)were detected at highest concentrations with ciprofloxacin(CIP)being the dominant compound.Concentrations of CIP in the influent samples were in the range of 433 e6010 ng/L.The consumption of antibiotics was estimated on the basis of influent mass load and catchment population data.We found difference in consumption patterns between the two served areas.Compared to local people in Colombo,tourists in Hikkaduwa appeared to take more antibiotics during the study period with the estimated daily dose of 0.25 g per 1000 persons.Moreover,macrolides accounted for a larger portion than FQs in Hikkaduwa,with azithromycin(AZM)being the most prevalent antibacterial agent.After comparison with an official report by Medical Supplies Division of Sri Lanka,we conjected that AZM was not commonly used among local people and it was mainly introduced by foreign arrivals.As for the removal efficiency,the activated sludge system of Colombo exhibited better elimination and more stable performance than the constructed wetland process of Hikkaduwa. 展开更多

The cyclone dust collector is an important subsystem of straw crushers used in agriculture.In the present study,a new type of dust collector with involute morphology is proposed to obtain better dust removal efficiency with respect to that of classical tangential and spiral dust collectors.A discrete phase model(DPM)method is used in synergy with a turbulence model,and the SIMPLE algorithm to simulate the flow field inside the dust collector and the related particle dynamics.It is shown that the internal flow field features a primary swirl,a secondary swirl and blockage effects.Moreover,for the involute dust collector,the tangential velocity in the initial stage and the pressure in the high-pressure area are larger than those obtained for the classical types.The dust removal efficiency is 37.11%,25.3%,and 16.37%for the involute type dust collector,the tangential type and the spiral type,respectively. 展开更多

Performance of a Horizontal Flow Constructed Reed Bed Filter for Municipal Wastewater Treatment: The Case Study of the Prototype Installed at Gaston Berger University, Saint-Louis, Senegal

In Saint-Louis, Senegal, a constructed wetland with horizontal flow reed beds (FHa and FHb) has demonstrated significant efficacy in treating municipal wastewater. Analyzing various treatment stages, the system showed only a slight temperature variation, from an influent average of 26.3°C to an effluent of 24.7°C. Electrical conductivity decreased from 1331 mS/cm to 974.5 mS/cm post-primary treatment, with suspended solids (SS) dramatically reduced from 718.9 mg/L to 5.7 mg/L in the final effluent. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) saw a notable decrease, from initial levels of 655.6 mg/L and 1240 mg/L to 2.3 mg/L and 71.3 mg/L, respectively. Nitrogenous compounds (N-TN) and phosphates () also decreased significantly, indicating the system’s nutrient removal capacity. Microbiological analysis revealed a reduction in fecal coliforms from 7.5 Ulog/100ml to 1.8 Ulog/100ml and a complete elimination of helminth eggs. The presence of Phragmites and Typha was instrumental in enhancing these reductions. The system’s compliance with the Senegalese standards for disposal into natural environments, WHO recommendations for unrestricted water reuse in irrigation, and the European legislation for water reuse was established. The effluent quality met the stringent criteria for various classes of agricultural reuse, illustrating the system’s potential for sustainable water management. This wetland model presents a robust solution for water-stressed regions, ensuring environmental protection while supporting agricultural needs. The study calls for ongoing research to further refine the system for optimal, reliable wastewater treatment and water resource sustainability. 展开更多

In this experiment,cobalt ferrite-supported activated carbon(CF-AC)was developed and characterized via the wet impregnation method for the removal of Cr and Pb(II)ions from tannery wastewater.Batch adsorption was carried out to evaluate the effect of experimental operating conditions(pH of solution,contact time,adsorbent dose,and temperature),and the removal efficiencies of Cr and Pb(II)ions by the developed adsorbents were calculated and recorded for all experimental conditions.These variables were estimated and reported as removal efficiencies of 98.2%for Cr and 96.4%for Pb(II)ions at the optimal conditions of 5,0.8 g,80 min,and 333 K for pH,adsorbent dose,contact time,and temperature,respectively.The equilibrium for the sorption of Cr and Pb(II)ions was studied using four widely used isotherm models(the Langmuir,Freundlich,Dubinin-Radushkevich,and Temkin isotherm models).It was found that the Freundlich isotherm model fit better with the coefficient of determination(R2)of 0.9484 and a small sum of square error of 0.0006.The maximum adsorption capacities(Qm)of Pb(II)and Cr adsorbed onto CF-AC were determined to be 6.27 and 23.6 mg/g,respectively.The adsorption process conformed well to pseudo-second order kinetics as revealed by the high R2 values obtained for both metals.The thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption of Cr and Pb(II)ions onto CF-AC was spontaneous,feasible,and endothermic under the studied conditions.The mean adsorption energy(E)values revealed that the adsorption mechanism of Cr and Pb(II)by CF-AC is physical in nature.The results of the study showed that adsorbent developed from CF-AC can be efficiently used as an environmentally friendly alternative adsorbent,for removal of Cr and Pb(II)ions in tannery wastewater. 展开更多

Maintaining stable water quality is one of the key processes for recirculating coral aquaculture. Traditional aquarium systems which mainly utilized a nitrification of nitrifying bacteria attached to the surface of massive artificial filter material are difficult to maintain the oligotrophic conditions necessary for coral aquaculture. This study investigated the removal effects of dissolved inorganic nitrogen(ammonia and nitrate) by live rock(LR), a key component in the "Berlin system" coral aquarium. The expression levels of bacterial functional genes, AOA3,amo A and nos Z, were measured on the exterior and interior of LR. The nitrifying and denitrifying bacterial abundance on LR was quantified and the nitrogen nutrient regulatory effects of LR were evaluated. The results demonstrated that LR mainly removed ammonium(NH_4^+) from the water with a mean efficiency of 0.141 mg/(kg·h), while the removal of nitrate(NO_3~–) was not significant. Bacterial diversity analysis showed that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria(AOB) were the most common bacteria on LR, which accounted for 0.5%–1.4% of the total bacterial population, followed by denitrifying bacteria, which accounted for 0.2% of the total population, and the ammonia-oxidizing archaea(AOA) were the least common type(<0.01%). The low abundance of denitrifying bacteria may be responsible for the poor nitrate(NO_3~–) removal of LR. Thus, other biological filtration methods are needed in coral aquaria to control nitrates generated from nitrification or biological metabolism. 展开更多

The optimal operating condition for the total nitrogen(TN)removal in an anoxic/oxic⁃membrane reactor(A/O⁃MBR)was studied by employing response surface methodology(RSM),which is a statistical test method for optimizing stochastic processes.The individual and interactive influences of three operating parameters including dissolved oxygen in aerobic tank(DO),internal mixed liquor recycle rate(IR),and mixed liquor suspended solids(MLSS)on the TN removal efficiency were evaluated.TN removal efficiency increased first and then reduced with the increase of DO,IR,and MLSS.Results from RSM indicated that the three factors had significant interactive influences on the TN removal efficiency.Meanwhile,the interaction between DO and MLSS had more significant effects on the TN removal efficiency than those of the other two.The maximum TN removal efficiency was forecasted at 83.34%according to the model when MLSS was 7926.6 mg/L,IR was 371.8%,and DO was 3.5 mg/L.Under this optimum condition,the experimental TN removal efficiency was 83.13%,which further confirmed that the optimum strategy was reliable. 展开更多

The knowledge of the existence,distribution and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(SPAHs)in wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs)was vital for reducing their concentrations entering the aquatic environment.The concentrations of 13 SPAHs and 16 PAHs were all determined in a WWTP with styrene butadiene rubber(SBR)in partnership with the moving bed biofilm reactor(MBBR)process.SPAHs presented a higher concentration lever than PAHs in nearly all samples.The total removal efficiencies of PAHs and SPAHs ranged from 64.0%to 71.36%and 78.4%to 79.7%,respectively.The total yearly loads of PAHs(43.0 kg)and SPAHs(73.0 kg)were mainly reduced by the primary and SBR/MBBR biological treatment stages.The tertiary treatment stage had a minor contribution to target compounds removal.According to a synthesis and improvement fate model,we found that the dominant processes changed as the chemical octanol water partition coefficient(K_(ow))increased.But the seasonal variations of experimental removal efficiencies were more obvious than that of predicted data.In the primary sedimentation tank,dissolution in the aqueous phase and sorption to sludge/particulate matter were controlling processes for the removal of PAHs and SPAHs.The sorption to sludge and biodegradation were the principal removal mechanisms during the SBR/MBBR biological treatment process.The contribution of volatilization to removal was always insignificant.Furthermore,the basic physicochemical properties and operating parameters influenced the fate of PAHs and SPAHs in the WWTP. 展开更多

Mining activities have led to a generation of large quantities of heavy metals laden wastes which are released into the environment in an unsustainable way causing the contamination of the ecosystems and posing a risk to human health. Most mining companies have not employed any rehabilitation or remediation program of the heavy metal laden waste. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of sunflower for phytoremediation of heavy metal polluted mine tailings. Phytoremediation is an emerging technology in the remediation of mine tailings that uses tolerant plant species to clean up contaminated sites. It uses plants with high biomass and sunflower has been identified as such. These plants can extract, transfer, sequester and stabilize a variety of metals through mechanisms such as phytoextraction, phytostabilization, phytoaccumulation and phytovolatilization. Pot experiments were conducted by growing sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) in pyrite mine tailings and in agricultural soil as a control. The study showed that the concentration of Cu reduced from 40.76 mg/kg to 36.59 mg/kg, Zn reduced from 3.58 mg/kg to 3.49 mg/kg and Fe reduced from 23.70 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg respectively in the mine tailings after 6 weeks. Analysis of harvested sunflower (roots, stems, leaves) showed that sunflower could remove heavy metals from the tailings and the highest removal efficiency was 53.7% and the highest translocation factor was 0.25. It was concluded that sunflower has the potential to remediate contaminated mine tailings and that phytoremediation is a viable and efficient technology to treat soils contaminated with heavy metals. 展开更多

This research paper presented the potential of Corchuros olitorius L.as a natural coagulant in the removal of turbidity,total suspended solids,and biochemical oxygen demand from the domestic wastewater of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines.Optimization of the natural coagulant and synthetic coagulant was employed prior to the treatment design.The jar test method was used in the optimization and lab analysis including the gravimetric method,dilution technique,and digital measurements.The optimization results of Corchuros olitorius L.using the jar test method revealed better removal at a lower dosage of 50 mg/L and a higher settling time of 90 minutes.The characterization using FTIR analysis also suggests a functional group that influences coagulation activity.Using the optimum dose and optimum settling time,results with the different treatment designs showed the highest removal at pH 7 showed%BOD removal of 89.78%(A75C25);85.98%(A25C75);88.76%(A50C50).TSS removal measured values of 88.50%(A75C25),85.56%(A25C75),and 87.16%(A50C50),while turbidity removal of 83.47%(A75C25),80.27%(A25C75),and 80.27%(A50C50).Statistically,measured values differ between treatment designs.It is suggested to investigate removal efficiency in more varied pH conditions,different settling times,stirring speed,and other variables for future studies. 展开更多

BACKGROUND:The study aims to investigate an optimal indicator for changing the filter during the continuous renal replacement therapy(CRRT)in intensive care unit(ICU)patients with acute kidney injury(AKI).METHODS:Patients with AKI requiring CRRT in an ICU were randomly divided into two groups for crossover trial,i.e.,groups A and B.Patients in the group A were firstly treated with continuous veno-venous hemofiltration(CVVH),followed by continuous veno-venous hemodiafiltration(CVVHDF).Patients in the group B were firstly treated with CVVHDF followed by CVVH.Delivered doses of solutes with different molecular weights at the indicated time points between groups were compared.A correlation analysis between the delivered dose and pre-filter pressure(P_(PRE))and transmembrane pressure(P_(TM))was performed.Receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves were constructed to evaluate the accuracy of P_(TM) as an indicator for filter replacement.RESULTS:A total of 50 cases were analyzed,27 in the group A and 23 in the group B.Delivered doses of different molecular-weight solutes significantly decreased before changing the filter in both modalities,compared with those at the initiation of treatment(all P<0.05).In the late stage of CRRT,the possible rebound of serum medium-molecular-weight solute concentration was observed.P_(TM) was negatively correlated with the delivered dose of medium-molecular-weight solute in both modalities.The threshold for predicting the rebound of serum concentration of medium-molecularweight solute by P_(TM) was 146.5 mm Hg(1 mm Hg=0.133 k Pa).CONCLUSIONS:The filter can be used as long as possible within the manufacturer’s safe use time limits to remove small-molecular-weight solutes.P_(TM) of 146.5 mm Hg may be an optimal indicator for changing the filter in CRRT therapies to remove medium-molecular-weight solutes. 展开更多

Given the central role of light in the algal photosynthesis,respiration,cell division,growth and the accumulation of value products,the effects of light-emitting diodes(LEDs)light wavelengths(blue,white,red and green)were studied in Scenedesmus obliquus.Biomass,residual nutrient amount,soluble protein,astaxanthin and reactive oxygen species,superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT)and peroxidase(POD)activity were analyzed to determine the effects of different monochromatic light wavelengths via biochemical methods.The results showed that blue light wavelength is the optimal light wavelength for phosphorus removal efficiency and the accumulation of biomass and astaxanthin in S.obliquus.Meanwhile,high reactive oxygen species content under the blue light might induce the accumulation of astaxanthin.The high activity of SOD,CAT and POD might participate in clearing the reactive oxygen species to facilitate the growth of microalgae.Furthermore,we found mixed blue/green lights treatment is the most appropriate mixture for the nitrogen removal.Under the blue light treatment,high light intensity and 18L:6D light cycle is the best condition for biomass and astaxanthin accumulation.Optimal nitrogen/phosphorus removal efficiency was observed under a 24L:0D light cycle.These results might provide a foundational data for the optimizing the productivity of high-value metabolites and treatment of wastewater. 展开更多

Environmental pressure, land utilization, and economic feasibility have resulted in the development of alternatives to treatment fish farm wastewater. We examined the influence of two water treatment systems—a constructed wetland (CW) and a soil filter system (SF)—on the constitution of the phytoplankton community analyzed through the functional grouping of species and nutrients removal of aquaculture farm. The CW provided high removal efficiency: 82.9% for ammonia, 87.0% for nitrate, 96.9% for nitrite, 85.5% for total phosphorus, 88.5% for SRP and 71.6% for BOD. Removal efficiency of SF was lower than CW, removing 82.1% of ammonia, 7.2% of total phosphorus, 45.9% of SRP and 39.4% of nitrite, but was satisfactory. The functional group F, made up of Chlorophyceae Dictyosphaerium pulchellum and Kirchneriella lunaris, was the most representative in both systems, followed by functional group P and constituted by Zygnemaphyceae Melosira sp. The number of functional groups decreased in the outlet of the two treatment systems, where S1, H1 and W1, characteristic of eutrophic environment, were retained. Data show that CW and the SF system are potentially applicable to the fish farm wastewater treatment and ensure an improvement in water quality. 展开更多

Metallographs and LECO Image Analysis System were used to analyze the content of alumina in aluminum alloy before and after electromagnetic separation. It is seen that removal effciency increases with the increase of electromagnetic force (EMF) and diameter of inclusion particles while decreases with the increase of melt velocity and height of separator. Nitric oxide being a major gas pollutant has attracted much attention and various technologies have been developed to reduce NO emission to preserve the environment.Advanced persulfate oxidation technology is a workable and effective choice for wet flue gas denitrification due to its high efficiency and green advantages.However,NO absorption rate is limited and affected by mass transfer limitation of NO and aqueous persulfate in traditional reactors.In this study,a rotating packed bed(RPB)was employed as a gas-liquid absorption device to elevate the NO removal efficiency(η_(NO))by aqueous persulfate((NH_(4))_(2)S_(2)O_(8))activated by ferrous ethylenediaminetetraacetate(Fe^(^(2+))-EDTA).The experimental results regarding the NO absorption were obtained by investigating the effect of various operating parameters on the removal efficiency of NO in RPB.Increasing the concentration of(NH_(4))_(2)S_(2)O_(8) and liquid-gas ratio could promoted the oxidation and absorption of NO while theη_(NO) decreased with the increase of the gas flow and NO concentration.In addition,improving the high gravity factor increased theη_(NO) and the total volumetric mass transfer coefficient(K_(G)α )which raise theη_(NO) up to more than 75%under the investigated system.These observations proved that the RPB can enhance the gas-liquid mass transfer process in NO absorption.The correlation formula between K_(G)α and the influencing factors was determined by regression calculation,which is used to guide the industrial scale-up application of the system in NO removal.The presence of O_(2) also had a negative effect on the NO removal process and through electron spin resonance spectrometer detection and product analysis,it was revealed that Fe^(2+)-EDTA activated(NH_(4))2S_(2)O_(8) to produce•SO_(4)^(-),•OH and•O_(2)^(-),played a leading role in the oxidation of NO,to produce NO_(3)^(-)as the final product.The obtained results demonstrated a good applicable potential of RPB/PS/Fe^(2+)-EDTA in the removal of NO from flue gases. 展开更多

The dual bag filter(DBF)system is a new polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans(PCDD/Fs)emission control technology that has more efficient(PCDD/Fs)removal performance,a higher activated carbon utilization rate and less activated carbon consumption compared with the traditional single bag filter system.Moreover,few studies have been relevant to the mechanism of the PCDD/Fs removal process in the DBF system,and the selection of operating conditions of the DBF system lacks an academic basis.This study established a PCDD/Fs removal efficiency model of activated carbon injection combined bag filter(ACI+DBF)system for hazardous waste incineration flue gas and predicted the crucial effect factors.New adsorption coefficients k_(1)=532,145 Nm^(3)/(mol s)and k_(2)=45 Nm^(3)/(mol s),and the relationship expression between the number of available adsorption positions of recycled AC(AAC′)and cycle times(n)are proposed in the model.The results verify that the model error was below 5%.In addition,the PCDD/Fs removal efficiency model predicts that in a certain range,the PCDD/Fs removal efficiency increases with increasing activated carbon injection concentration.The best cycle number of activated carbon was less than 3,and the ratio of circulating activated carbon to fresh activated carbon in second bag filter(SBF)should be controlled at 7–8. 展开更多

An up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket(UASB)reactor targeting sulfate reduction was operated under a constant TOC/S-SO2-4ratio of 1.5±0.3 g C/g S for 639 days using crude glycerol as carbon source.A filamentous and fluffy flocculant material,namely slime-like substances(SLS),was gradually accumulated in the bioreactor after the cease of methanogenic activity.The accumulation of SLS was followed by a decrease in the removal efficiencies and a deterioration in the performance.Selected characteristics of SLS were investigated to explore the causes of its formation and the effect of SLS on the UASB performance.Results showed that glycerol fermentation and sulfate reduction processes taking place in the reactor were mainly accomplished in the bottom part of the UASB reactor,as the sludge concentration in the bottom was higher.The accumulation of SLS in the UASB reactor caused sludge flotation that further led to biomass washout,which decreased the sulfate and glycerol removal efficiencies.Batch activity tests performed with granular sludge(GS),slime-covered granular sludge(SCGS)and SLS showed that there was no difference between GS and SLS in the mechanism of glycerol fermentation and sulfate reduction.However,the specific sulfate reduction rate of GS was higher than that of SLS,while SLS showed a higher glycerol fermentation rate than that of GS.The different rates in GS and SLS were attributed to the higher relative abundances of fermentative microorganisms found in SLS and higher relative abundances of sulfate reducing bacteria(SRB)found in GS. 展开更多

Because of the high cost of cultivating urease-producing bacteria(UPB),this paper proposes soybean-urease-induced carbonate precipitation(SUICP)as a novel biocement for treatment of nickel contaminants and cementation of sandy soil.We found the optimal soaking time and soybean-powder content to be 30 min and 130 g/L,respectively,based on a standard of 5 U of urease activity.The most efficient removal of nickel ions is obtained with an ideal mass ratio of urea to nickel ions to soybean-powder filtrate(SPF)of 1:2.4:20.The removal efficiency of nickel ions can reach 89.42%when treating 1 L of nickel-ion solution(1200 mg/L with the optimal mass ratio).In incinerated bottom ash(IBA),the removal efficiency of nickel ions is 99.33%with the optimal mass ratio.In biocemented sandy soil,the average unconfined compressive strength(UCS)of sand blocks cemented with soybean urease-based biocement can reach 118.89 kPa when the cementation level is 3.Currently,the average content of CaCO_(3)in sand blocks is 2.52%.As a result,the SUICP process can be applied to remove heavy metal ions in wastewater or solid waste and improve the mechanical properties of soft soil foundations. 展开更多
