Like economic status, people's housing status is normally relatively stable and unlikely to significantly change in a short time span. But China is an exception as the past 30 years have witnessed tremendous institutional reform, particularly in the housing system.Almost overnight, public housing became privatized and the real estate market developed. This transformation also meant an abrupt change in the status of social groups in relation to housing-for the better or worse. From the social stratification perspective, this has also been an important period of reshaping social status. Thus,it is of great signif icance to study "housing status groups" during the transitional period to shed light on a myriad of social ills.展开更多

One of the most important challenges to China now is the relationship between the social development and social order. Social tension, social disruption, disequilibrium, and fragmentation are just a few terms that have been used to refer to that relationship. The author has to point out some neglected order-related issues, which are not as intense but nevertheless influential on our development. The author would like to suggest the term of “non-equilibrium” to incorporate all the social order problems. The reform and the implementation of the open policy have introduced many changes in the relationships between social strata; however, the legislation lag has led to the non-equilibrium between these social strata. It has also brought about means-end discordance among different strata, deviations of rationality of objectives from rationality of values, mismatches between subjective social cognition and objective status, and so on and so forth. In order to keep growing, China needs to launch legislation and take actions to rebalance the relationships between the social strata.展开更多
