Objectives:The purpose of the study is to explore the relationships amongst innovative behaviour,self-efficacy,colleague solidarity of nurses and career success of nurses in China's Mainland.Method:This study used the cross-sectional investigation method and nurses were recruited from eight tertiary hospitals and four secondary hospitals in Tianjin,China.A convenience sample of 848 nurses was included in this survey.Structural equation model analysis was performed as well. Results:Results revealed that the nurses'career success score was at the medium degree, whilst innovative behaviour and self-efficacy were in the medium-high level and had high level of colleague solidarity. The four variables include innovative behaviour,self-efficacy,colleague solidarity of nurses and career success;each dimension showed positive correlation(r=0.145 to 0.923,P<0.05).Independent sample T-test showed no significant differences between the two types of hospitals in the main variables(P>0.05).Multiple linear regression analysis showed that innovative behaviour,self-efficacy and academic solidarity entered the career success regression equation(β=0.091 to 0.560,P<0.05),thereby possibly explaining 52.0%of the total variation.Hierarchical regression analysis and path analysis model showed that self-efficacy and colleague solidarity of nurses played mediating roles between innovative behaviour and career success(β=0.132 to 0.221,P<0.05).Conclusion:The level of career success of nurses remains to be improved.Additionally, high innovative behaviour,self-efficacy and colleague solidarity of nurses can improve the career success of Chinese nurses. 展开更多

This report presents the results of a study on Reproductive Health done in North Kivu in September 2009. It was conducted by HEAL Africa, in partnership with the Provisional Division of Health, and financed by the University of Ottawa, Canada/CRDI with technical assistance from Western Cape University of South Africa. The study was conducted in the health zones of Birambizo and Kayna within the framework of the central office. The focus of the report is on one aspect of Reproductive Health—Low Risk Maternity. This study was conducted in rural areas given that Reproductive Health indicators are much weaker when compared with urban areas, according to EDS RDC, 2007 [1]. This study emphasizes the following points: General characteristics of the participants in the study, and the utilization and accessibility of maternity services in rural areas in conflict situations. The formula SPSS 12.0.1 was used to facilitate data analysis in the study. This study comes at a point in time when its relevance to HEAL Africa’s work will assist HEAL and its partners in determining the focus of interventions done in health zones in order to improve maternal and neonatal health. HEAL Africa firstly stepped into a Safe Motherhood pilot project in June 2006 for 9 months in the Masisi zone, then in 2007 in the Birambizo and Kayna health zones. In November 2007, HEAL expanded into Walikale and in October 2008, into Kirotshe, Binza, and Lubero. The intervention kit consists of reinforcing the capacity of existing health facilities, training traditional midwives who serve as a link between the community and the health structures, the provision of sanitary equipment, medical essentials and community mobilization was done through local leaders about health and reproduction, and organizing women of reproductive age in solidarity groups (SG) to generate maternity insurance. The community approach “Solidarity Groups for Maternity Insurance” constitutes the spine of HEAL Africa within the support it provides in Reproductive Health. The principal idea is to educate and train communities on how to use the MMR services that are available in their community, and to remove financial barriers to accessing health services. The 4 pillars that comprise the Safe Motherhood program are: family planning, prenatal care, safe assisted delivery and essential obstetric care. These four strategic measures are integral in assuring primary health care and equality for women. This study evaluates this approach, keeping in mind local strategies and their effects on improving the utilization and accessibility of reproductive health services. 展开更多

The paper aims to examine different visual manifestations of the European discourse on solidarity during the immigration crisis (2015-2017). International Organizations such as UN (United Nations), IOM (International Organization for Migration), and EASO (European Asylum Support Office) following a set of European policies reflect solidarity in practice among the European Union (EU) states. Policy makers, apart from implementing and drafting different sets of policies in moments of emergency due to the immense migrant flow, have also accompanied these practices with visual representations in the form of posters and photos. These visual representations feature the organizations themselves and the discourse on solidarity towards the migrants. Hence, examining this material we can have a clear picture of the identity of the organizations but also, and most importantly, how they visualize their understanding of solidarity discourse. The paper is unfolded in the following way. Firstly, the theoretical framework of solidarity and the European Union’s perspective of solidarity are discussed in detail. Then, the focus is moved towards a theoretical discussion of emotion, the role of affect, and the role these Organizations play in the creation of European policies on migration. Thirdly, the analysis of the material, photos, posters, and a leaflet will be discussed in conjunction to the aforementioned theoretical framework of solidarity and affect. 展开更多

Biological residual materials can be obtained from surgical activities or from pathological waste material collected for analysis and stored in formalin. This material can be stored in biobanks with the purpose of future research. Formalin-fixed tissue and also formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues are not suitable for all kinds of genetic studies on DNA or RNA, as formalin solution is well known for damaging nucleic acids. Therefore, for the purpose of conducting genetic studies, samples should be frozen in order to maintain a good quality of DNA/RNA over time Biobanks, in which waste samples are frozen, are undoubtedly expensive to maintain; however, it could be useful and important to consider their possible implication in particular research, regarding for example the tumor cells growth process, or when the procurement of samples is difficult. Regarding the relationship between informed consent and tissue collection, storage and research, two choices are possible: irreversible or reversible sample anonymization. These procedures involve different approaches and possible solutions that we will seek to define. Also, an important ethical aspect in regard to the role of biobanks is encouraging sample donation. For donors, seeing human sample being kept rather than discarded and seeing them become useful for research highlight the importance of the human body and improve the attitude towards donation. This process might also facilitate the giving of informed consent more trustfully and willingly. 展开更多

The European Union has been experiencing the whole set of serious crises undermining European integration. The most important ones have been: financial and economic crisis, immigration crisis, crisis of nationalistic radicalization, Brexit, crisis of security caused by terrorism, strengthening of the Islamic State (ISIS), and destabilization of regions around Europe (mainly in the Middle East). The main thesis of this article is that all of them have weakened not only the EU as a whole but also the Member States. This has caused serious consequences being the main topics of this analysis, namely, (1) the value of solidarity lying upon the European integration concept being challenged by the crises; and (2) undermining by the crises the EU's pursuit of achieving the competitive advantage, stated in the strategy Europe 2020. The lack of solidarity is strongly visible in the EU Member States' differentiated attitudes towards the crises the EU has been facing. The paper will focus on analysis of solidarity in the light of intergovernmental approach supported by constructivism. The main research questions are: (1) To what extent have the EU crises strengthened the intergovernmental approach in the EU integration? (2) How has the meaning and scope of the solidarity as the main EU value changed over time in the EU's citizens perception due to the EU crises? (3) To what extent have strong intergovernmental approach and instrumentalization of the solidarity value influenced pursuit for competitive advantage in the EU? (4) Does solidarity have a potential to contribute to efficient reform of the EU leading to strengthening its striving for competitive advantage in the future? The main research approach is intergovernmentalism while the dominating methods are a process-tracing supported by a systemic method. The main conclusion of the article is necessity for redefining the rule of solidarity in order to efficiently strive for competitive advantage. 展开更多

This paper examines whether and in what ways the education system and the pedagogical culture particularly prevailing in Higher Education could be enriched with an alternative pedagogical model. A model that is differentiated from the prevalent pedagogical concepts is inspired by values and principles that form the core of a synergetic education and a social and solidarity economy. From an epistemological perspective, "ssociationnisme" that social and solidarity economy promotes is at stake and education must play an important role. The paper also examines the attitude of students towards such a perspective, mainly through exploring the current options as well as its potential expansion thereof in a way that promotes creativity and innovation. This study draws on previous research by P. Vathi (2014) on the topic of "A multidimensional-interdisciplinary approach and evaluation of University students' creativity, with emphasis on the utilization of statistical analyses" in order to assess the influence of education on students' creativity 展开更多

This paper illustrates approaches to flooding risk governance in a territory where a high density of population corresponds to a high level of industrial activities and a significant development of transport infrastructures in a transboundary context between France, Germany and Switzerland. In the last few years, some fundamental changes in European official instructions about risks and especially about flooding risks occurred. Substantial public policy challenges remain in order to promote a broad-based resilient territory twinned with local knowledge of sustainable land management and civic participation in local governance. The survey is based on a GIS study and questionnaires with a representative panel of 235 stakeholders from the studied territory. Our statistical results demonstrate that, in spite of a deep-rooted mindset as regards flooding hazards, local population awareness of the territorial vulnerability is not related to important challenges. A hierarchical analysis of the data shows that the awareness of stakeholders is less related to the importance of risks when the territorial level decreases. It also highlights the decline of solidarity among neighbouring communities when the distance from the industrial axis increases. Greatly impacted by flooding risks, industrial activities of the regional basin are paradoxically not really perceived as common challenges. Such a case study illustrates how public policies need to be relevant to the adapted levels. Awareness of common issues is a central target to develop acceptance in order to provide an efficient framework of resilience, including willingness to pay to reduce the risk and solidarity in local development compensations. 展开更多

This paper illuminates some of the main effects that neoliberalism has on the psychological and socio-economic profile of Americans. It outlines the structural processes that produced the groundwork for today’s enormous popularity of right-wing extremism in the USA.America’s middle-class has turned right-wing extremist during the Trump years and this trend has continued to dominate American politics today. While populism mobilizes feelings of injustice and grievances, the source and commencement of these grievances is the centerpiece of this article. The paper does so by applying Rodrigo Nunes’(2020a)analysis of the effects of Bolsenarismo in Brazil to the American society. The paper differentiates between the effects of individualism, punitivism, and the valorization of order above the law and shows how these trends have influenced preponderant identity traits of Baby Boomers and Generation X.Secondly, the paper focuses on the concept of“negative solidarity”which is one direct consequence of the worldview produced by successful indoctrination of neoliberal values and goes hand in hand with the consequent pauperization of the American worker. The preponderance of negative solidarity remains a key handicap for a democratic future and for any social mobilization efforts within the USA. 展开更多

Objective: The purpose of this paper was to determine the effects of colleague solidarity and affective commit- ment on intent to stay among nurses, and to provide the basis for developing more effective retention strategies. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out and a sample of 346 registered nurses was recruited in convenience sampling method from three tertiary hospitals in Tianjin, China. A self-administrative questionnaire was used in order to collect data. All analyses were performed using SPSS 17.0 software. Results: The mean scores for colleague soli- darity, a_ffective commitment and intent to stay of nurses were 3.61±0.50, 3.26±0.55, and 3.54±0.67, respectively. The nurses' colleague solidarity and each dimension, affective commitment and intent to stay showed a positive correlation (r=0.141-0.709, P〈0.01). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that emotional solidarity, academic solidarity and a_ffective commitment entered intent to stay regression equation (β=0.170-0.437, P〈0.001) and explained 45.3% of the total variation in nurses' intent to stay, and emotional solidarity became the strongest predictor (β=0.437, P〈0.001). Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that affective commitment played a partial moderating role on the relation- ship between colleague solidarity and intent to stay (β=0.174-0.659, P〈0.001). Conclusion: Hospital administrators and managers should develop effective strategies to enhance colleague solidarity and affective commitment among nurses, which will ultimately increase nurses' intent to stay. 展开更多

The Clash of Solidarities in the European Union Rethinking Jiirgen Habermas' Conception of Solidarity in the Transnational Context

From the perspective of political... The term solidarity is used extensively in the current political debate in Europe. Many times, the European Union is accused of a "lack of solidarity". But is this really the case? From the perspective of political theory, Jurgen Habermas convincingly argues that solidarity beyond the nation state is indeed possible - even without a European demos. Since solidarity was artificially constructed within the nation state, it could very well expand into a form of transnational solidarity. However, the European Union is a complex sui generis institution, characterized by its multi-level governance. This paper therefore complements Habermas' concep- tion by Andrea Sangiovanni's reciprocity-based internationalism which differenti- ates more detailed between national, member state and transnational solidarity. Moreover, the paper argues that the democratic deficiencies and the economic liberalization in the European Union led to a fourth form of solidarity: a revived solidarity with the nation state. The current situation within the European Union is thus not the result of a lack of solidarity. On the contrary, there is plenty of solidarity around. However, the parallel existence of these different forms of solidarity could not persist without conflicts under the given discourse where solidarity is framed as a zero-sum game. Hence, the European Union does not suffer from a lack of solidarity but rather from a clash of multiple solidarities. 展开更多

Building on our previous work,we assess how social solidarity towards migrants and refugees has changed before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,by collecting and analyzing a large, novel, and longitudinal dataset of migration-related tweets. To this end,we first annotate above 2000 tweets for(anti-)solidarity expressions towards immigrants, utilizing two annotation approaches(experts vs.crowds).On these annotations,we train a BERT model with multiple data augmentation strategies, which performs close to the human upper bound. We use this high-quality model to automatically label over 240000 tweets between September 2019 and June 2021.We then assess the automatically labeled data for how statements related to migrant(anti-)solidarity developed over time, before and during the COVID-19 crisis. Our findings show that migrant solidarity became increasingly salient and contested during the early stages of the pandemic but declined in importance since late 2020,with tweet numbers falling slightly below pre-pandemic levels in summer 2021.During the same period, the share of anti-solidarity tweets increased in a sub-sample of COVID-19-related tweets. These findings highlight the importance of long-term observation,pre-and post-crisis comparison, and sampling in research interested in crisis related effects. As one of our main contributions,we outline potential pitfalls of an analysis of social solidarity trends:for example, the ratio of solidarity and anti-solidarity statements depends on the sampling design,i.e.,tweet language,Twitter-user accounts’national identification(country known or unknown)and selection of relevant tweets. In our sample, the share of anti-solidarity tweets is higher in native(German)language tweets and among“anonymous”Twitter users writing in German compared to English-language tweets of users located in Germany. 展开更多
