It is found that, along the thickness direction, the electromechanical properties of FGPMs change exponentially. We apply the Hankel integral transform technique and reduce the problem to a singular integral equation, and then numerically determine the unknown contact stress and electric displacement at the contact surface. The results show that the surface contact stress, surface azimuthal displacement, surface electric displacement, and inner electromechanical field are obviously dependent on the gradient index of the FGPM coating. It is found that we can adjust the gradient index of the FGPM coating to modify the distributions of the electric displacement and contact stress.展开更多

The cylinder with its external surface fixed is subjected to a dynamic shearing stress at the internal surface. The material properties are assumed to vary in the radial direction in a power law form, while keep invariant in the axial direction. With expansion in the axial direction in terms of trigonometric series, the governing equations for the unknown functions about the radial coordinate r and time t are deduced. By applying the variable substitution technique, the superposition method and the separation of variables consecutively, series-form solutions of the equations are obtained. Natural frequencies and the transient torsional responses are finally discussed for a functionally graded finite hollow cylinder.展开更多

The relationship curves of the displacement solutions and various parameters (permeability, frequency, etc.) under action of a unit of torque are also given in this paper. The results are consistent with previous Reissner's solutions, where a two-phase medium decays to a single-phase medium. The solution is useful in solving relevant dynamic problems of a two- phase saturated medium in engineering.展开更多

The shear modulus is assumed to be functionally graded such that the mathematics is tractable. Laplace and Hankel transforms were used to reduce the problem to solving a Fredholm integral equation. The crack tip stress field is obtained by considering the asymptotic behavior of Bessel function. Explicit expressions of both the dynamic stress intensity factor and the energy density factor were derived. And it is shown that, as crack driving force, they are equivalent for the present crack problem. Investigated are the effects of material nonhomogeneity and (strip's) highness on the dynamic fracture behavior. Numerical results reveal that the peak of the dynamic stress intensity factor can be suppressed by increasing the nonhomogeneity parameter of the shear modulus, and that the dynamic behavior varies little with the adjusting of the strip's highness.展开更多

The Brenner potential is used to set up the simulation system. Simulation results show that the carbon nanotubes can bear larger torsional deformation, for the armchair type (10,10) single wall carbon nanotubes, with a yielding phenomenon taking place when the torsional angle is up to 63°(1.1rad). The influence of carbon nanotube helicity in torsional deformation is very small. The shear modulus of single wall carbon nanotubes should be several hundred GPa, not 1 GPa as others reports.展开更多

The rigidities and densities as well as the initial stress are assumed varying as a function of depth in both the media. These variations are the product of the polynomial function of depth in degree n (n ∈ R) and the exponential function of depth. Following the theory of elastic waves, the mathematical model is established. Separation of variables is used to obtain the displacement in the layer and the half-space. Intrinsic boundary conditions are imposed to derive the dispersion equation. The inhomogeneity parameters associated with the rigidity, the density, and the initial stress of the medium are found to have substantial influence on the phase velocity of the torsional surface wave. The graphical presentations are drawn to exhibit the findings. The results thus obtained are significant for the investigation and characterization of torsional surface wave in the heterogeneous anisotropic layer.展开更多

The method of variable separation is applied and two ordinary differential governing equations are established and solved. The boundary conditions are satisfied rigorously and the solutions are expressed by means of eigen function expansions. The diagram of torque is formulated by trigonometric series and used to determine the coefficients in above expansions.
