The results showed that the volumetric loading rate and nitrogen remo...Anammox was successfully transited from heterotrophic denitrification and autotrophic denitrification in two upflow biofilm reactors, respectively. The results showed that the volumetric loading rate and nitrogen removal efficiency in the reactor transited from heterotrophic denitrification were higher than that in its counterpart. When the hydraulic retention time was 12 h or so, the total nitrogen loading rate was about 0.609 kg N/(m3·d), and the effluent ammonia and nitrite concentrations were less than 8.5 mg/L and 2.5 mg/L, respectively. The upflow anammox biofilm reactor was capable of keeping and accumulating the slow-growing bacteria efficiently. During operation of the reactor, the biomass color was gradually turned from brownish to red, and the ratio of ammonia consumption, nitrite consumption and nitrate production approached the theoretical one. These changes could be used as an indicator for working state of the reactor.展开更多

The results of commercial application of catalysts revealed that this RUF series of catalysts loaded after optimized grading could effectively remove metals, sulfur and carbon residue from the re-siduum to provide improved oil for the following fixed-bed reactor. In the meantime, the RUF series of catalysts have excellent stability to reach an operating cycle of 1.5 years, resulting in minimization of losses caused by refinery downtime.展开更多

Calcium carbonate often precipitates in anaerobic reactors treating wastewater with high calcium content.The aim of this paper is to study the effect of wastewater composition on calcium carbonate precipitation in upf...Calcium carbonate often precipitates in anaerobic reactors treating wastewater with high calcium content.The aim of this paper is to study the effect of wastewater composition on calcium carbonate precipitation in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket(UASB)reactors.Two laboratory-scale UASB reactors were operated with calcium-containing influents using acetate and carbohydrate as substrate,respectively.There was an obvious accumulation of inorganic precipitate observed in the biogranules.Observations via scanning electron microscope(SEM)and energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS)showed that the acclimated biogranules in the two reactors differed in microstructure.Calcium carbonate was found to have precipitated on the surface of acetate-degrading biogranules,but precipitated at the core of the carbohydrate-degrading biogranules.The results indicated that substrates had significant influence on the location of calcium carbonate precipitation in anaerobic granular sludge,which was expected due to the different methanogens distribution and pH gradient within the granular sludge degrading various substrates.Moreover,the location of calcium carbonate precipitation substantially affected the specific methanogenic activity(SMA)of the granular sludge.The SMA of the acetate-degrading biogranules dropped from 1.96 gCODCH4·gVSS^(–1)·d^(–1)to 0.61 gCODCH4·gVSS^(–1)·d^(–1)after 180-d of operation in the reactor.However,the SMA of the carbohydrate-degrading biogranules was not adversely affected by calcium carbonate precipitation.展开更多

The higher efficiency of an improved upflow solid reactor(IUSR) designed in this study was demonstrated in the treatment of concentrated black water and kitchen waste. The highest methane production of 48 L/person/day was achieved at the hydraulic retention time(HRT) of 7 days, while the other measures of performance at the HRT of 8.3 days were better than at the HRT of 7 or 10 days, achieving a methane production of 43 L/person/day, removal of total chemical oxygen demand(TCOD)of 89%, removal of soluble chemical oxygen demand(SCOD) of 92%, and conversion of chemical oxygen demand(COD) to methane of 71%. It is not recommended to decrease HRT lower than 7 days due to the instability of the initial period. The concentrations of volatile fatty acids(VFAs) in the IUSR were less than 10 mg/L, indicating that the anaerobic process was stable. Sludge bed development showed that sludge bed with high microbial activity was formed in the bottom and that the precipitation zone of effluents formed should preferably occupy 30% of the height of the IUSR. The effluents of the IUSR could be used for irrigation in agriculture in combination with a settling tank accompanied by disinfection to remove solids and pathogens.展开更多
This paper describes the feasibility of fresh leachate treatment by an upflow blanket filter(UBF).Through dilution and partial effluent recycling,the organic loading rates increased from 0.51 to 14.56 kg COD/(m^(3)...This paper describes the feasibility of fresh leachate treatment by an upflow blanket filter(UBF).Through dilution and partial effluent recycling,the organic loading rates increased from 0.51 to 14.56 kg COD/(m^(3)·d),meanwhile the corresponding hydraulic retention time decreased from 9.0 to 3.6 d.The reactor was able to achieve steady-state within 80 d.Based on the distribution of COD fluxes in the process,it was concluded that anabolism was the main pathway of COD removal in the initial phase(1–33 d),accounting for 57%–85%of total COD removed.As the anaerobic consortium of bacteria reached steady-state(after 70–86 d),the majority of COD removed was transformed into methane,because the specific methane yield was close to the theoretical value(0.36 L CH4/(g CODdeg)).展开更多

The pre-noon cusp/cleft is the p...With energetic ion measurements on FAST satellite, the morphologic features of quiet-time ionospheric O+ ion upflowing at altitudes of 2000 to 4000 km are drawn out for the first time. The pre-noon cusp/cleft is the predominant region of upflowing occurrence for O+ with lower energy. Meanwhile the pre-dawn sector near the equatorward edge of the plasma convection dominates the occurrence for the higher energy O+ ions. No matter whether the energy is lower or higher, the upflows occur often over a wide MLT range of lower latitudes outside the auroral oval. The upflowing within the pre-midnight (21:00― 22:00 MLT) auroral oval carrys larger energy fluxes, with extremely large fluxes for higher energy O+ appearing near the polar cap boundary. For altitudes of 2000―4200 km under observation, the ion conics occur much more frequently than ion beams. Ion beams are rarely found below 3000 km, while the conics occur uniformly over the observed altitudes.展开更多
