BACKGROUND Postpartum quality of life(QoL)in women with heart disease has been neglected.AIM To improve clinical communication and treatment,we integrated medical data and subjective characteristics to study postpartum QoL concerns.METHODS The study assessed QoL 6 wk after birth using the 12-Item Short-Form Health Survey. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale,Cardiac Anxiety Questionnaire,European Heart Failure Self-Care Behavior Scale, and a self-designed questionnaire based on earlier research were also used to assess patient characteristics.Patient data were collected.Prediction models were created using multiple linear regression.RESULTS This retrospective study examined postpartum QoL in 105 cardiac patients.Postpartum QoL scores were lower(90.69±13.82)than those of women without heart disease, with physical component scores(41.09±9.91)lower than mental component scores(49.60±14.87).Postpartum depression(33.3%),moderate anxiety(37.14%),pregnancy concerns(57.14%),offspring heart problems(57.14%),and life expectancy worries(48.6%)were all prevalent. No previous cardiac surgery, multiparity, higher sadness and cardiac anxiety, and fear of unfavorable pregnancy outcomes were strongly related to lower QoL(R^(2)=0.525).CONCLUSION Postpartum QoL is linked to physical and mental health in women with heart disease. Our study emphasizes the need for healthcare workers to recognize the unique characteristics of these women while developing and implementing comprehensive management approaches during their maternity care. 展开更多

The impact of global climate change and air pollution on mental health has become a crucial public health issue.Increased public awareness of health, advancements in medical diagnosis and treatment, the way media outlets report environmental changes and the variation in social resources affect psychological responses and adaptation methods to climate change and air pollution. In the context of climate change, extreme weather events seriously disrupt people's living environments, and unstable educational environments lead to an increase in mental health issues for students.Air pollution affects students'mental health by increasing the incidence of diseases while decreasing contact with nature, leading to problems such as anxiety, depression, and decreased cognitive function. We call for joint efforts to reduce pollutant emissions at the source, improve energy structures, strengthen environmental monitoring and governance, increase attention to the mental health issues of students, and help student groups build resilience;by establishing public policies, enhancing social support and adjusting lifestyles and habits,we can help students cope with the constantly changing environment and maintain a good level of mental health.Through these comprehensive measures,we can more effectively address the challenges of global climate change and air pollution and promote the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. 展开更多

One in five Americans experience symptoms associated with at least one mental health disorder every year. These include behavioral addictions, which have long been overlooked despite their similar neural bases with substance addictions. Gambling addiction, a type of behavioral addiction, deserves particular attention given the significant negative effects, this addiction has on financial and interpersonal health. The purpose of this paper is to review the available literature concerning the behavioral and neural processes involved in gambling addiction, including: the anticipation of reward, the role of dopamine, and the neural substrates of the decision-making processes involved in gambling addiction. Market research has also identified solutions that integrate applied neuroscience and self-tracking systems to monitor and manage mental health issues associated with gambling addiction. The authors then propose a gambling treatment-focused mobile app solution that addresses outstanding issues with a special design aimed at reversing plasticity in order to relieve the effects of gambling addiction. . 展开更多

This study investigates mental health literacy among young and middle-aged urban and rural residents and the differences in mental health literacy, perceived social support and subjective well-being.From January to February 2022,620 participants(320 rural and 300 urban residents)from three provinces of China were selected by con-venience sampling.A general data questionnaire, mental health literacy scale, perceived social support scale and subjective well-being scale were administered. The mental health literacy scores of urban residents were 3.34±0.57 and those of rural residents were 2.73±0.79.The results of multiple regression analysis showed that the mental health literacy scores of rural residents were more significant than those of urban residents in terms of sex and age, while urban residents’mental health literacy scores were more significant than those of rural resi-dents in terms of monthly income.Mental health literacy, perceived social support and subjective well-being of young and middle-aged urban and rural residents were all positively correlated(P<0.01).While the level of mental health literacy is better among urban residents than rural residents, perceived social support plays a partial mediating role between mental health literacy and subjective well-being of both urban and rural residents, and should be the focus of researchers seeking to improve the level of well-being of residents. 展开更多

Background:The occurrence of mental health symptoms is higher in individuals aged between 18 and 24 years than in other age groups.Mental health literacy is derived from health literacy, and focuses on the knowledge, attitudes, and competencies that individuals need to acquire to manage their own health effectively.Low mental health literacy is associated with poorer mental health.Grit is also a known protective factor against mental disorders.Despite a heightened focus on mental health literacy and grit as important factors for decreasing mental health symptoms, knowledge of the effect of mental health literacy and grit on mental health symptoms is very limited. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between mental health literacy and psychological symptoms and the mediating effect of grit on these relationships. Methods:This cross-sectional descriptive study used survey data from 178 university students in Korea.Data were collected between March and May 2022.The SPSS PROCESS macro(Model 4)was used to analyze the data. Results:Mental health literacy was not directly associated with psychological symptoms. However,an indirect pathway was observed between mental health literacy, depression, and anxiety, through grit. Conclusion:Mental health literacy affects psychological symptoms through grit. Therefore,to improve the mental health of university students,it is necessary to develop programs that increase mental health literacy and grit. 展开更多

There are over thirty million refugees globally with severe experiences of trauma.Art therapy intervention allows for nonverbal expression and could alleviate mental health symptomatology among refugees. The present review’s aim was to integrate and summarize the previous research which examined the effects of visual arts on alleviating psychological conditions of refugees. However, due to the paucity of studies which solely used visual arts,we included studies that used visual arts alongside other modalities as part of an expressive arts therapy intervention. The present review synthesizes studies that examined the effect of art therapy on mental health issues of refugees from January 2000 to March 2021.Seven studies(child and adolescent sample,N=5 and adult sample,N=2)with a total of 298 refugee participants(n=298)met our inclusion criteria. The participants were from the Middle East and North Africa(MENA),Southeast Asia, and Europe. We found three commonly reported mental health disorders, namely Post Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD),anxiety, and Major Depression Disorder. The research highlights how art therapy interventions could be a great starting point to alleviate symptomatology among refu-gees.Four additional benefits of art therapy which were commonly reported across the seven studies emerged from this review:working with traumatic experience/loss,rebuilding social connection and trust, nonverbal com-munication and self-expression of loss and trauma, and retelling stories.Art therapy interventions could be used as a starting point in the healing process of traumatized refugees to encourage verbal articulation of their feelings and reduce mental health symptoms.Despite these promisingfindings, due to a dearth of robust methodologies, further research is required to assess the long-term effectiveness of art therapy. 展开更多

The purpose of this project is to examine why the mental health of employees should be prioritized in the workplace. Most employees have likely experienced a visible illness or injury at some point during their careers. It is easier to identify these physical ailments that may adversely affect an employee’s performance at work, such as a broken leg or the common cold. However, there are conditions that are much less visible that negatively impact employees every day, and mental health is one of them. A person’s mental health is a significant factor in their work life that should not be ignored. While it may be difficult to recognize when someone is struggling with depression, anxiety, or another form of mental illness on the surface, employers should not automatically assume their entire staff is okay. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with an increase in civil unrest in society, employers must reevaluate the way they conduct business, starting with the treatment of their employees. To aid employers with prioritizing mental health at work, this paper’s objectives are to address the stigma associated with mental health issues/illness, develop recommendations for inclusive work environments, increase an employer’s investment in mental health, reduce employee turnover, and normalize respect in the workplace. The findings are discussed, and recommendations are provided. Employers who intentionally prioritize and invest in their employees’ mental health will significantly reduce the costs associated with attracting and recruiting new staff due to high turnover rates. Additionally, their reputation as a preferred employer will increase. 展开更多

The prevalence of mental health problems in both Malaysian and global workplaces has significantly increased due to the presence of the coronavirus disease(COVID-19)pandemic,globalization,technology advancement in Industry 4.0,and other contributing factors. The pervasiveness of the issue poses a huge challenge to improving the occupational safety and health(OSH)of workers in various industries, especially in the digital industry. The emergence of the innovative industry is evident mainly due to the rapid development of Industry 4.0 and the rele-vant demands of multiple businesses in the digital transformation.Nonetheless, limited studies and academic dis-cussions were conducted on the OSH topic of digital employees.Hence, the current study serves tofill the existing gap and provide academic contributions by scrutinising the perceptions of digital workers regarding their work-place well-being,mental health literacy, and the impression of employing e-mental health. The objectives of this study are:1)To examine the mental health literacy and workplace wellness of digital workers,2)to explore the e-mental health usage intention and actual e-mental health utilization, and 3)to identify digital workers’feedback on e-mental health. In the current context,e-mental health focuses on three dimensions,namely,1)“health in our hand(HIOH)”,2)“interacting for health(IFH)”,and 3)“data enabling health(DEH)”.The present study employed an online cross-sectional survey and received 326 digital workers’completed responses.Variables, such as“mental health literacy(MHL)”,“workplace wellness(WW)”,and e-mental health intention and usage were explicated by analysing the data through descriptive statistics. The study results indicated a moderate to a high level of the MHL and the WW.More than half of the workers possessed a high intention level to employ e-mental health, with the HIOH dimension being the most prevalent domain.Nevertheless, the actual e-mental health usage was very low, owing to the online resources being a new concept amongst digital employees.Numerous confounding factors also existed in affecting the low usage, such as privacy concerns, data security levels, and health verification issues. In addition, the mental health issue has not been openly and widely discussed in Malay-sian workplaces due to stigmatisation. As such, the currentfindings could provide additional insights into the OSH literature;it could serve as a guideline for the OSH decision-makers,employers,and eHealth developers when establishing a feasible framework for the practical adoption of e-mental health services by digital workers. 展开更多

In recent decades,Haiti has been subject to man-made and natural disasters that have left its citizens vulnerable to a range of shocks. With a weak state unable to protect its populace,Haitians are exposed to some of the highest levels of poverty and violence in the Western Hemisphere. In recent years,Haitians have experienced two crises that this study analyzes:the instability and political violence of“peyi lòk”as well as the global pandemic of COVID-19.This community-based assessment explores the impact of these two crises on the mental health and psychological well-being of 38 Haitian university students in the understudied northern part of the country. Results indicate that both crises had similarities related to their psychological effects on young people, most notably in terms of traumatic experiences related to threats or violence, forced confinement, and large increases in population-wide uncertainty.Additionally, the extreme violence of“peyi lòk”and the widespread unpredictability of COVID-19 and its effects in the early days of the pandemic resulted in high levels of stress and fear. Both crises also resulted in extreme economic hardship for students, with many reporting difficulties accessing basic needs such as food and water. This study highlights how converging population-level crises in“complex emergencies”can heighten trauma and compromise mental health. 展开更多

This study empirically examines whether child characteristics mitigate the negative impact of widowhood on the elderly’s mental health using follow-up survey data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS).A total of 5,326 older adults aged 60 years and older are selected from three waves of panel data(2013,2015,and 2018).Thefindings suggest that respondents who experienced widowhood exhibit an increase in depressive symptoms. However, the higher income of children and frequent face-to-face emotional interactions improve the mental health of the widowed elderly. Moreover, heterogeneity analyses show that the buffering effect of higher child income is more significant among men and the Midwestern widowed elderly, and frequent face-to-face emotional interactions are more effective in improving the psychological status of women and the Midwes-tern widowed elderly. In the special social and cultural background of China, family members remain the main support for the elderly, and the current social pension system is still imperfect. Therefore, children should strengthen emotional communication with their parents while increasing their economic income. In that way, widowhood can achieve both material and spiritual prosperity. The government should identify the vulnerable groups among the elderly widows and introduce policies aimed at improving their mental health and reducing the disparity in mental health status. 展开更多
