For the reduction of bovine serum proteins from wastewater,a novel mixed matrix membrane was prepared by functionalizing the substrate material polyaryletherketone(PAEK),followed by carboxyl groups(C-SPAEKS),and then adding amino-functionalized UiO-66-NH_(2)(Am-UiO-66-NH_(2)).Aminofunctionalization of UiO-66 was accomplished by melamine,followed by an amidation reaction to immobilize Am-UiO-66-NH_(2),which was immobilized on the surface of the membrane as well as in the pore channels,which enhanced the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface while increasing the negative potential of the membrane surface.This nanoparticle-loaded ultrafiltration membrane has good permeation performance,with a pure water flux of up to 482.3 L·m^(-2)·h^(-1) for C-SPAEKS/AmUiO-66-NH_(2) and a retention rate of up to 98.7%for bovine serum albumin(BSA)-contaminated solutions.Meanwhile,after several hydrophilic modifications,the flux recovery of BSA contaminants by this series of membranes increased from 56.2%to 80.55%of pure membranes.The results of ultra-filtration flux time tests performed at room temperature showed that the series of ultrafiltration membranes remained relatively stable over a test time of 300 min.Thus,the newly developed mixed matrix membrane showed potential for high efficiency and stability in wastewater treatment containing bovine serum proteins. 展开更多

Achieving high fouling resistance and permeability using membrane separation technology in water treatment processes remains a challenge.In this work,a novel mixed-matrix membrane(MMM)(poly(arylene ether ketone)[PAEK]-containing carboxyl groups[PAEK-COOH]/UiO-66-NH_(2)@graphene oxide[GO])with superb fouling resistance and high permeability was prepared by the nonsolvent-induced phase separation method,by in-situ growth of UiO-66-NH_(2) on the GO layer,and by preparing hydrophilic PAEK-COOH.On the basis of the structure and performance analysis of the MMM,the maximum water flux reached 591.25 L·m^(-2)·h^(-1) for PAEK-COOH/UiO-66-NH_(2)@GO,whereas the retention rate for bovine serum albumin increased from 85.40%to 94.87%.As the loading gradually increased,the hydrophilicity of the MMMs increased,significantly enhancing their fouling resistance.The strongest anti-fouling ability observed was 94.74%,which was 2.02 times greater than that of the pure membrane.At the same time,the MMMs contained internal amide and hydrogen bonds during the preparation process,forming a cross-linked structure,which further enhanced the mechanical strength and chemical stability.In summary,the MMMs with high retention rate,strong permeability,and anti-fouling ability were successfully prepared. 展开更多

The unstable zinc(Zn)/electrolyte interfaces formed by undesired dendrites and parasitic side reactions greatly hinder the development of aqueous zinc ion batteries.Herein,the hydroxy-rich sorbitol was used as an additive to reshape the solvation structure and modulate the interface chemistry.The strong interactions among sorbitol and both water molecules and Zn electrode can reduce the free water activity,optimize the solvation shell of water and Zn^(2+)ions,and regulate the formation of local water(H_(2)O)-poor environment on the surface of Zn electrode,which effectively inhibit the decomposition of water molecules,and thus,achieve the thermodynamically stable and highly reversible Zn electrochemistry.As a result,the assembled Zn/Zn symmetric cells with the sorbitol additive realized an excellent cycling life of 2000 h at 1 mA·cm^(-2)and 1 mAh·cm^(-2),and over 250 h at 5 mA.cm^(-2)and 5 mAh.cm^(-2).Moreover,the Zn/Cu asymmetric cells with the sorbitol additive achieved a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.6%,obtaining a better performance than that with a pure 2 mol-L^(-1)ZnSO_(4)electrolyte.And the constructed Zn/poly1,5-naphthalenediamine(PNDA)batteries could be stably discharged for 2300 cycles at 1 A g^(-1)with an excellent capacity retention rate.This result indicates that the addition of 1 mol-L^(-1)non-toxic sorbitol into a conventional ZnSO_(4)electrolyte can successfully protect the Zn anode interface by improving the electrochemical properties of Zn reversible deposition/decomposition,which greatly promotes its cycle performance,providing a new approach in future development of high performance aqueous Zn ion batteries. 展开更多

Photosynthesis occurs mainly in chloroplasts,whose development is regulated by proteins encoded by nuclear genes.Among them,pentapeptide repeat(PPR)proteins participate in organelle RNA editing.Although there are more than 450 members of the PPR protein family in rice,only a few affect RNA editing in rice chloroplasts.Gene editing technology has created new rice germplasm and mutants,which could be used for rice breeding and gene function study.This study evaluated the functions of OsPPR9 in chloroplast RNA editing in rice.The osppr9 mutants were obtained by CRISPR/Cas9,which showed yellowing leaves and a lethal phenotype,with suppressed expression of genes associated with chloroplast development and accumulation of photosynthetic-related proteins.In addition,loss of OsPPR9 protein function reduces the editing efficiency of rps8-C182,rpoC2-C4106,rps14-C80,and ndhB-C611 RNA editing sites,which affects chloroplast growth and development in rice.Our data showed that OsPPR9 is highly expressed in rice leaves and encodes a DYW-PPR protein localized in chloroplasts.Besides,the OsPPR9 protein was shown to interact with OsMORF2 and OsMORF9.Together,our findings provide insights into the role of the PPR protein in regulating chloroplast development in rice. 展开更多

Direct methanol fuel cells(DMFCs) have attracted extensive attention as promising next-generation energy conversion devices. However, commercialized proton exchange membranes(PEMs) hardly fulfill the demand of methanol tolerance for DMFCs employing high-concentration methanol solutions.Herein, we report a series of semi-crystalline poly(arylene ether ketone) PEMs with ultra-densely sulfonic-acid-functionalized pendants linked by flexible alkyl chains, namely, SL-SPEK-x(where x represents the molar ratio of the novel monomer containing multiple phenyl side chain to the bisfluoride monomers). The delicate structural design rendered SL-SPEK-x membranes with high crystallinity and well-defined nanoscale phase separation between hydrophilic and hydrophobic phases. The reinforcement from poly(ether ketone) crystals enabled membranes with inhibited dimensional variation and methanol penetration. Furthermore, microphase separation significantly enhanced proton conductivity. The SL-SPEK-12.5 membrane achieved the optimum trade-off between proton conductivity(0.182 S cm^(-1), 80 ℃), water swelling(13.6%, 80 ℃), and methanol permeability(1.6 × 10^(-7)cm~2 s^(-1)). The DMFC assembled by the SL-SPEK-12.5 membrane operated smoothly with a 10 M methanol solution, outputting a maximum power density of 158.3 mW cm^(-2), nearly twice that of Nafion 117(94.2 mW cm^(-2)). Overall, the novel structural optimization strategy provides the possibility of PEMs surviving in high-concentration methanol solutions, thus facilitating the miniaturization and portability of DMFC devices. 展开更多

Studying the significant impacts on vegetation of drought due to global warming is crucial in order to understand its dynamics and interrelationships with temperature,rainfall,and normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI).These factors are linked to excesses drought frequency and severity on the regional scale,and their effect on vegetation remains an important topic for climate change study.East Asia is very sensitive and susceptible to climate change.In this study,we examined the effect of drought on the seasonal variations of vegetation in relation to climate variability and determined which growing seasons are most vulnerable to drought risk;and then explored the spatio-temporal evolution of the trend in drought changes in East Asia from 1982 to 2019.The data were studied using a series of several drought indexes,and the data were then classified using a heat map,box and whisker plot analysis,and principal component analysis.The various drought indexes from January to August improved rapidly,except for vegetation health index(VHI)and temperature condition index(TCI).While these indices were constant in September,they increased again in October,but in December,they showed a descending trend.The seasonal and monthly analysis of the drought indexes and the heat map confirmed that the East Asian region suffered from extreme droughts in 1984,1993,2007,and 2012among the study years.The distribution of the trend in drought changes indicated that more severe drought occurred in the northwestern region than in the southeastern area of East Asia.The drought tendency slope was used to describe the changes in drought events during 1982–2019 in the study region.The correlations among monthly precipitation anomaly percentage(NAP),NDVI,TCI,vegetation condition index(VCI),temperature vegetation drought index(TVDI),and VHI indicated considerably positive correlations,while considerably negative correlations were found among the three pairs of NDVI and VHI,TVDI and VHI,and NDVI and TCI.This ecological and climatic mechanism provides a good basis for the assessment of vegetation and drought-change variations within the East Asian region.This study is a step forward in monitoring the seasonal variation of vegetation and variations in drought dynamics within the East Asian region,which will serve and contribute to the better management of vegetation,disaster risk,and drought in the East Asian region. 展开更多

Urbanization brings new selection pressures to wildlife living in cities,and changes in the life-history traits of urban species can reflect their responses to such pressures.To date,most of the studies investigating the impacts of urbanization on avian life-history traits are conducted in Europe and North America,while such studies are often lacking in quickly developing countries in Asia(e.g.,China).In this study,we examined the variations in reproductive life-history traits of Chinese Bulbuls(Pycnonotus sinensis)along the urbanization gradient in Hangzhou,China.We detected 234 natural nests of Chinese Bulbuls and continuously monitored them in two continuous breeding seasons from 2012 to 2013.We collected data on seven life-history traits(laying date,incubation period,nestling period,clutch size,egg volume,hatching success rate,and fledging success rate).We used infrared cameras to record the number of feedings per hour as the measure of food resources for the nestlings.We measured nest predation pressure by monitoring 148 natural breeding nests during breeding seasons and 54 artificial nests immediately after breeding seasons.We then calculated the urbanization synthetic index(USI)as a measure of the level of urbanization and examined its relationship with the seven life-history traits.We found that Chinese Bulbuls laid eggs significantly earlier with increasing USI.However,the other six life-history traits did not vary significantly with the USI.Moreover,the feeding frequency of chicks increased significantly with the USI,but the nest predation pressure of Chinese Bulbuls decreased significantly with the USI.Increased food resources and reduced nest predation pressure in cities may lead to earlier laying date of Chinese Bulbuls.Further study should test whether the earlier laying date of Chinese Bulbuls is the result of phenotypic plasticity or genetic change. 展开更多

Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)have gained attention in the development of MOFs/polymer hybrid membranes for pervaporation.However,the agglomeration of MOFs particles and interfacial defects limit its further application.In this study,we present a novel approach to fabricate a ZIF-8@PEBAX/PVDF nanocomposite membrane for removing thiophene from the model gasoline by combination of selfassembly and in-situ growth.Firstly,a PVDF supporting membrane was modified to have a negative charge.Next,positively charged zinc ions were attracted onto the negatively charged PVDF supporting membrane through electrostatic interaction.Afterwards,the Zinc ions deposited PVDF membrane was immersed into dimethylimidazole solution to form a uniform ZIF-8 layer.Finally,the ZIF-8 layer was coated with poly(ether-block-amide)(PEBAX)using the pouring method.Experimental results showed that the separating efficiency of the ZIF-8@PEBAX/PVDF nanocomposite membrane was improved significantly compared to that of pristine PEBAX membrane.The optimal permeation flux and enrichment factor of membrane were 27.80 kg(m^(2)h)^(-1)and 6.9,respectively. 展开更多

As sessile organisms,plants possess a complex system to cope with environmental changes.Ca^(2+)functions as a vital second messenger in the stress signaling of plants,and the CBL-interacting protein kinases(CIPKs)serve as essential elements in the plant Ca^(2+)signaling pathway.In this study,calcineurin B-like protein-interacting protein kinase 26(BdCIPK26)from Brachypodium distachyon was characterized.Overexpression of BdCIPK26 enhanced tolerance to drought and salt stress of transgenic plants.Further investigations revealed that BdCIPK26 participated in abscisic acid(ABA)signaling,conferred hypersensitivity to exogenous ABA in transgenic plants,and promoted endogenous ABA biosynthesis.Moreover,BdCIPK26 was found to maintain ROS homeostasis in plants under stress conditions.Therefore,this study indicates that BdCIPK26 functions as a positive regulator in drought and salt stress response. 展开更多

Adult neurogenesis,the process of creating new neurons,involves the coordinated division,migration,and differentiation of neural stem cells.This process is restricted to neurogenic niches located in two distinct areas of the brain:the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus and the subventricular zone of the lateral ventricle,where new neurons are generated and then migrate to the olfactory bulb.Neurogenesis has been thought to occur only during the embryonic and early postnatal stages and to decline with age due to a continuous depletion of neural stem cells.Interestingly,recent years have seen tremendous progress in our understanding of adult brain neurogenesis,bridging the knowledge gap between embryonic and adult neurogenesis.Here,we discuss the current status of adult brain neurogenesis in light of what we know about neural stem cells.In this notion,we talk about the importance of intra cellular signaling molecules in mobilizing endogenous neural stem cell prolife ration.Based on the current understanding,we can declare that these molecules play a role in targeting neurogenesis in the mature brain.However,to achieve this goal,we need to avoid the undesired proliferation of neural stem cells by controlling the necessary checkpoints,which can lead to tumorigenesis and prove to be a curse instead of a blessing or hope. 展开更多

Electrochemiluminescence has been developed as a robust analytical technique owing to its intrinsic advantages,such as near-zero background signal noise,wide dynamic ranges,high sensitivity and low cost and simple equipment.ECL luminophore as the critical component to generate light signals plays significant roles in this robust analytical system.Compared with traditional ECL luminophores,near infrared(NIR)ECL luminophores have attracted significant attentions recently due to their negligible autofluorescence,lower background interference and deep tissue penetration.Although substantial progresses have been achieved in exploring novel NIR ECL luminophores and elucidating their roles in addressing diverse challenges,there is still scarce of comprehensive reviews on the development of NIR ECL luminophores so far.In this review,the recent advancements on NIR ECL materials,including inorganic metal complexes,organic small molecules,metal nanoclusters,quantum dots and lanthanide-based materials,have been thoroughly summarized and discussed.In addition,we also provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges and prospects that lie ahead for the future development of NIR ECL luminophores in the future. 展开更多

The fibrous root system in cereals comprises primarily adventitious roots (ARs), which play important roles in nutrient and water uptake. Current knowledge regarding the molecular mechanism underlying AR development is still limited. We report here the isolation of four rice (Oryza sativa L.) mutants, from different genetic backgrounds, all of which were defective in AR formation. These mutants exhibited reduced numbers of lateral roots (LRs) and partial loss of gravitropism. The mutants also displayed enhanced sensitivity to N-l-naphthylphthalamic acid, an inhibitor of polar auxin transport (PAT), indicating that the mutations affected auxin transport. Positional cloning using one of the four mutants revealed that it was caused by loss-of-function of a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for ADP- ribosylation factor (OsGNOM1). RT-PCR and analysis of promoter::GUS transgenic plants showed that OsGNOM1 is expressed in AR primordia, vascular tissues, LRs, root tips, leaves, anthers and lemma veins, with a distribution pattern similar to that of auxin. In addition, the expressions of OsPIN2, OsPIN5b and OsPIN9 were altered in the mutants. Taken together, these findings indicate that OsGNOM1 affects the formation of ARs through regulating PAT. 展开更多

The chemical components of the essential oils in the barks and leaves of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver were analyzed and compared by chromatograms and mass spectra technique, heuristic evolving latent projections (HELP), alternative moving window factor analysis (AMWFA) algorithms and normalization method based on the peak areas; the flavones in the barks and leaves of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver were separated on an ODS column by gradient elution carried out with the flow phase consisting of water, methanol and phosphoric acid (0.1%), and their contents were quantitatively determined by standard curve method and diode array detection (DAD) at 362 nm. The results show that 68 and 73 compounds respectively from essential oils of the barks and leaves of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver are identified, and there are 33 mutual compounds among 108 compounds determined. The total contents of these volatile components of the two samples possess 92.9% and 97.75% of the gross of the relevant essential oils, respectively; the contents of the rutin, quercetin and kaempferol in the barks and leaves of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver are 0.016 9, 0.003 6, 0.002 1 and 0.064 4, 0.030 2, 0.010 0 mg/g, respectively, and the determination recoveries are 95.2%-106.2%. The comparative analysis shows that for the barks and leaves of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver, there are significant differences in their components of the relevant essential oils and flavones. 展开更多

Two-dimensional materials(2D)with unique physicochemical properties have been widely studied for their use in many applications,including as hydrogen evolution catalysts to improve the efficiency of water splitting.Recently,typical 2D materials MoS2,graphene,MXenes,and black phosphorus have been widely investigated for their application in the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).In this review,we summarize three efficient strategies—defect engineering,heterostructure formation,and heteroatom doping—for improving the HER performance of 2D catalysts.The d-band theory,density of states,and Fermi energy level are discussed to provide guidance for the design and construction of novel 2D materials.The challenges and prospects of 2D materials in the HER are also considered. 展开更多

Plant calcineurin B-like (CBL) proteins have been proposed as important Ca2+ sensors and specifically interact with CBL-interacting protein kinases (CIPKs) in plant-specific calcium signaling. Here, we identified and isolated 15 CIPK genes in a japonica rice variety Nipponbare based on the predicted sequences of rice CIPK gene family. Gene structure analysis showed that these 15 genes were divided into intron-less and intron-rich groups, and OsCIPK3 and OsCIPK24 exhibited alternative splicing in their mature process. The phylogenetic analyses indicated that rice CIPKs shared an ancestor with Arabidopsis and poplar CIPKs. Analyses of gene expression showed that these OsCIPK genes were differentially induced by biotic stresses such as bacterial blight and abiotic stresses (heavy metal such as Hg2+, high salinity, cold and ABA). Interestingly, five OsCIPK genes, OsCIPK1, 2, 10, 11 and 12, were transcriptionally up-regulated after bacterial blight infection whereas four OsCIPK genes, OsCIPK2, 10, 11 and 14, were induced by all treatments, indicating that some of OsCIPK genes are involved in multiple stress response pathways in plants. Our finding suggests that CIPKs play a key role in both biotic and abiotic stress responses. 展开更多

An alkaline earth metal-organic framework [Ba(Hsip)(H2O)4]n (1, NaH2sip = 5-sulfoisophthalic acid sodium) has been constructed, and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In complex 1, each Ba(II) atom coordinates to one ligand Hsip3- and four water molecules with a distorted nine-coordinated monocapped tetragonal antiprism geometry. Each Hsip2- anion acts as a μ3-bridging ligand, in which two carboxylate groups adopt the same bidentate chelating coordinating model and the sulfonate group takes a monodentate coordinating model, resulting in a wave-like two-dimensional network with a (6, 3) topological structure. The two-dimensional networks are further linked by O–H···O to form a three-dimensional structure. Luminescent property and thermal stability of complex 1 are investigated. 1 belongs to the orthorhombic system, space group Pna21 with a = 7.3333(2), b = 16.7044(3), c = 10.4817(2), Z = 4, V = 1283.99(5)3, Mr = 453.58, Dc = 2.346 g/cm3, F(000) = 880, μ = 3.314 mm–1, the final R = 0.0261 and wR = 0.0592 for 2425 observed reflections with I 2σ(I). 展开更多

The absorption, fluorescence and Raman spectra of Ce(NO3)(3)(phen)(2) complex were assigned and the crystal structure of the complex was studied. Meanwhile the interactions between Cc (NO3)(3) (phen)(2) and DNA were studied by spectrum methods. As DNA was added, it is found that both the UV absorption bands of Ce(NO3)(3)(phen)(2) and the SERS bands of Ce(NO3)(3)(phen)(2) weaken evidently, while the fluorescence intensity of Ce(NO3)(3)(phen)(2) enhance dramatically. The complex compete against EB on the reaction with DNA. It is indicated by this spectrum methods that there are strong interactions between Ce(NO3)(3)(phen)(2) and DNA, and the bond mode is intercalation. The bond constant of the complex with DNA is determined to be 1.7 x 10(5). 展开更多

To investigate the Fe^2+ effects on root tips in rice plant, experiments were carried out using border cells in vitro. The border cells were pre-planted in aeroponic culture and detached from root tips. Most border cells have a long elliptical shape. The number and the viability of border cells in situ reached the maxima of 1600 and 97.5%, respectively, at 20---25 mm root length. This mortality was more pronounced at the first 1-12 h exposure to 250 mg/L Fe^2+ than at the last 12-36 h. After 36 h, the cell viability exposed to 250 mg/L Fe^2+ decreased to nought, whereas it was 46.5% at 0 mg/L Fe^2+. Increased Fe^2+ dosage stimulated the death of detached border cells from rice cultivars. After 4 h Fe^2+ treatment, the cell viabilities were _〉80% at 0 and 50 mg/L Fe^2+ treatment and were 〈62% at 150, 250 and 350 mg/L Fe^2+ treatment; The viability of border cells decreased by 10% when the Fe^2+ concentration increased by 100 mg/L. After 24 h Fe^2+ treatment, the viabilities of border cells at all the Fe^2+ levels were 〈65%; The viability of border cells decreased by 20% when the Fee+ concentration increased by 100 mg/L. The decreased viabilities of border cells indicated that Fe^2+ dosage and treatment time would cause deadly effect on the border cells. The increased cell death could protect the root tips from toxic harm. Therefore, it may protect root from the damage caused by harmful iron toxicity. 展开更多

Three complexes, [Pr(NO3)3(HL)2] (1), [Nd(NO3)3(HL)2] (2) and [Er(NO3)3(HL)2] ·0.5H2O (3), were synthesized from the reaction of a Schiff base ligand 2-[ (4-methylphenylimino)methyl ]-6-methoxyphenol (C15 H15 NO2, HL) with Ln(NO3)3·6H2O (Ln = Pr, Nd, Er). Characterization by single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique, elemental analysis, molar conductance, FT-IR, UV-Vis, ^1H NMR and thermal analysis shows the title complexes are neutral molecules where the central Ln( Ⅲ) ion is ten-coordinated in biapical anti-hexahedron prism geometry, with four oxygen atoms of the phenolic hydroxy and methoxy groups in the two bidentate Schiff base ligands and six oxygen atoms provided by the three bidentate NO3 - anions. Additionally, the kinetic mechanism of thermal decomposition of complex 3 was determined with a TG-DTG curves by both integral and differential methods. The functions of thermal decomposition reaction mechanism and the equation of kinetic compensation effect were obtained. 展开更多
