This paper studies the clan temples in four periods,namely,the development period(early Ming Dynasty and before),the shaping period(mid-Ming Dynasty to early Qing Dynasty),the maturity period(mid-Qing Dynasty),and the programmed period(late Qing Dynasty),analyzes and summarizes their prototypical planform features and attempts to summarize and construct a genealogy of the architectural characteristics of the plane shape of clan temples.During the Ming and Qing dynasties,Guangfu ancestral halls in general showed a journey of development from a centripetal-single-linear-multi-linear-grid pattern,forming the unique Guangsanlu classic pattern in the Guangfu area. 展开更多

This paper discusses ancestral hall architecture within the context of the Cantonese folk lineage in the Pearl River Delta.Using a typological research approach and chronological analysis,various factors that have influenced the evolution of ancestral hall architecture are analyzed.The study specifically investigates the features of ancestral halls during the Ming and Qing dynasties.Three periods of ancient China are analyzed:The transition from Ming to Qing,the mid-Qing dynasty,and the late Qing dynasty.The variables of each period and how they influence the evolution of architectural typological features are identified.Based on our analysis,architectural features are related to economic and social factors,materials available,and craftsmanship of the construction workers. 展开更多

Climate change significantly impacts forest ecosystems in arid and semi-arid regions.However,spatiotemporal patterns of climate-sensitive changes in individual tree growth under increased climate warming and precipitation in north-west China is unclear.The dendrochronological method was used to study climate response sensitivity of radial growth of Picea schrenkiana from 158 trees at six sites during 1990-2020.The results show that climate warming and increased precipitation significantly promoted the growth of trees.The response to temperature first increased,then decreased.However,the response to increased precipitation and the self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index(scPDSI)increased significantly.In most areas of the Tianshan Mountains,the proportion of trees under increased precipitation and scPDSI positive response was relatively high.Over time,small-diameter trees were strongly affected by drought stress.It is predicted that under continuous warming and increased precipitation,trees in most areas of the Tianshan Mountains,especially those with small diameters,will be more affected by precipitation. 展开更多

Plants are capable of regulating their shoot architecture in response to diverse internal and external environments.The circadian clock is an adaptive mechanism that integrates information from internal and ambient conditions to help plants cope with recurring environmental fluctuations.Despite the current understanding of plant circadian clock and genetic framework underlying plant shoot architecture,the intricate connection between these two adaptive mechanisms remains largely unclear.In this study,we elucidated how the core clock gene LUX ARRHYTHMO(LUX)regulates shoot architecture in the model legume plant Medicago truncatula.We show that mtlux mutant displays increased main stem height,reduced lateral shoot length,and decreased the number of lateral branches and biomass yield.Gene expression analysis revealed that Mt LUX regulated shoot architecture by repressing the expression of strigolactone receptor MtD14 and MtTB1/MtTCP1A,a TCP gene that functions centrally in modulating shoot architecture.In vivo and in vitro experiments showed that Mt LUX directly binds to a cis-element in the promoter of MtTB1/MtTCP1A,suggesting that Mt LUX regulates branching by rhythmically suppressing MtTB1/MtTCP1A.This work demonstrates the regulatory effect of the circadian clock on shoot architecture,offering a new understanding underlying the genetic basis towards the flexibility of plant shoot architecture. 展开更多

`The application of sewage sludge(SS)to forested lands may lead to the downward migration of potentially toxic elements(PTEs)through rainfall and thus pose risk to the subsoil and groundwater.Batch column experiments ... `The application of sewage sludge(SS)to forested lands may lead to the downward migration of potentially toxic elements(PTEs)through rainfall and thus pose risk to the subsoil and groundwater.Batch column experiments were conducted using leaching water equivalent to the rainfall amount in the study area over 3 years to investigate changes in concentrations of PTEs,including copper(Cu),zinc(Zn),lead(Pb),cadmium(Cd),and nickel(Ni)in the leachate from the acidic forest soil.Water quality index of leachate,potential ecological risk and human health risk in soil at different leaching stages were compared.Sewage sludge was applied at SS/soil mass ratios of 0:100(controls),15:85(T1),30:70(T2),45:55(T3),60:40(T4),and 75:25(T5).All treatments resulted in increased PTEs concentration in the upper 20 cm soil,T3-T5 increased potential ecological risk from"low"(control)to"moderate"or"considerable".During first year leaching,PTEs concentration increased with increasing SS/soil ratios,but the water quality index of T1-T3 was"excellent"or"good".Pb,Cu,Cd,and Ni in the 20-40 cm soil depth,and Zn in the 60-80 cm soil depth were also enriched,but potential ecological risk was"low".In subsequent leaching,PTEs concentration of leachate gradually returned to the background value and water quality index was"excellent".There were no significant changes in PTEs and ecological risk observed.During the monitoring process,the health risk caused by the migration of PTEs to the human body was always within the acceptable range.Overall,this study provides a reference for the management of risks from the application of SS on forestlands,i.e.,SS/soil ratios<45:55 is recommended on forestlands,and special attention should be given to early leaching risk.In addition,it also provides an important assessment method for the risk of PTEs leaching and migration in forested land application. 展开更多

We evaluated a novel and non-destructive method of the electrical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)to elucidate the genetic and evolutionary relationship of homoploid hybrid conifer of Pinus densata(P.d)and its parental species Pinus tabuliformis(P.t)and Pinus yunnanensis(P.y),as well as the artificial hybrids of the P.t and P.y.Field common garden tests of96 trees sampled from 760 seedlings and 480 EIS records of 1,440 needles assessed the interspecific variation of the P.d,P.t,P.y and the artificial hybrids.We found that(1)EIS at different frequencies diverged significantly among germplasms;P.y was the highest,P.t was the lowest,and their artificial hybrids were within the range of P.t and P.y;(2)maternal species effect of EIS magnitudes in the hybrids and P.d was stronger than the paternal species characteristics;(3)EIS of the artificial hybrid confirmed the mid-parent and partial maternal species characteristics;(4)unified exponential model of EIS for the interspecific and hybrids can be constructed as|Z|=Af^(-B);(5)cluster analysis for species and hybrid combinations in total corroborated with the previous hybrid model of Pinus densata.Our non-destructive EIS method complemented the previous finding that Pinus densata was originated from P.t and P.y.We conclude that the impedance would be a viable indicator to investigate the interspecific genetic variations of conifers. 展开更多

Up to 29 February 2020,SARS-CoV-2(HCoV-19/2019-nCoV) had infected more than 85 000 people in the world. In this study,we used 93 complete genomes of SARS-CoV-2 from the GISAID EpiFlu TM database to investigate the evolution and human-to-human transmissions of SARS-CoV-2 in the first two months of the outbreak.We constructed haplotypes of the SARS-CoV-2 genomes, performed phylogenomic analyses and estimated the potential population size changes of the virus. The date of population expansion was calculated based on the expansion parameter tau(τ)using the formula t=τ/2 u. A total of 120 substitution sites with 119 codons, including 79 non-synonymous and 40 synonymous substitutions, were found in eight coding-regions in the SARS-CoV-2 genomes.Forty non-synonymous substitutions are potentially associated with virus adaptation. No combinations were detected. The 58 haplotypes(31 found in samples from China and 31 from outside China)were identified in 93 viral genomes under study and could be classified into five groups. By applying the reported bat coronavirus genome(bat-RaTG13-CoV)as the outgroup, we found that haplotypes H13 and H38 might be considered as ancestral haplotypes,and later H1 was derived from the intermediate haplotype H3. The population size of the SARS-CoV-2 was estimated to have undergone a recent expansion on 06 January 2020, and an early expansion on 08 December 2019. Furthermore,phyloepidemiologic approaches have recovered specific directions of human-to-human transmissions and the potential sources for international infected cases. 展开更多

Based on geographic information system(GIS) spatial analysis technology, the spatial pattern of raster grid transport accessibility for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay area was studied and the states of spatial connectedness were simulated using highway passenger transport, railway passenger transport, port passenger transport and aviation passenger transport data. The result shows that transport accessibility within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay area costs ‘one hour’ and the spatial distribution of accessibility in the area presents clear ‘core-periphery’ spatial characteristics, with Guangzhou, Foshan, Shenzhen constituting the core. The transport accessibility of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao is high. Average accessibility of urban nodes as measured by travel time is 0.99 h, and the areas accessible within 1.42 h occupy 79.14% of the total area. Most of the areas with the lowest accessibility are found in the peripheral area, with the worst accessibility being 4.73 h. Compared with the west-side cities, the economically developed east-side cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay area have higher connectivity with roads, railways, ports, and aviation transport. Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao are closely linked. The higher the accessibility, the closer the intercity connectedness. 展开更多

The competition-density (C-D) effects for mean mass for tree, stem, branch and leaf were analyzed in Acacia auriculiformis stands. Mean tree mass-density and mean organ mass-density were well explained by the C-D equation of tree and the C-D equation of tree organ, respectively. An equation describing the relationship between mean leaf area u and density was formulated that fit the u-data well. The relationship between mean tree mass w and the ratio of each organ to mean tree mass (wo/ w) was examined. With increasing w, the stem mass ratio wS/w increased, whereas the branch mass ratio wB/w and the leaf mass ratio wL/w decreased. The yield difference between the lowest-density stand and the high-density stand became greater with stand growth. However, the yield of the mid-density stand was slightly lower than the yield of the high-density stand during the experimental period. To produce the most desirable combination of demanding individual-tree size and relative high stem yield, the mid-density is recommended as proper planting density for future management of A. auriculiformis stands. 展开更多

We used the cotyledons and cotyledonary nodes of Toona ciliata(Chinese mahogany)as explants to examine callus and adventitious shoot induction when exposed to different ratios of hormones.We also investigated the effects of seedling age,inoculation method,and genotype on the efficient regeneration of T.ciliata.The results showed that different genotypes exhibited significantly different callus induction efficiency.The cotyledons and cotyledonary nodes of 20-day seedlings inoculated onto MS medium with 0.5 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine(6-BA),0.5 mg/L kinetin(KT)and 0.05 mg/L 1-naphthylacetic acid(NAA)achieved a greater regeneration rate than did other concentrations of cytokinin and auxin.The numbers of shoots per cotyledon and cotyledonary node explant were 7.33 and 6.67.The optimal inoculation method for cotyledons was that the distal end of the explants was placed in contact with the medium.The optimal adventitious shoot differentiation medium for cotyledon explants was MS medium containing 0.3 mg/L 6-BA and 0.2 mg/L NAA,producing a 3.4 cm height of shoot on average.This study established an efficient regeneration system for T.ciliata with cotyledons and cotyledonary nodes as explants. 展开更多

The aboveground biomass(AGB)of shrubs and small trees is the main component for the productivity and carbon storage of understory vegetation in subtropical secondary forests.However,few allometric models exist to accurately evaluate understory biomass.To estimate the AGB of five common shrub(diameter at base<5 cm,<5 m high)and one small tree species(<8 m high,trees’s seedling),206 individuals were harvested and species-specific and multi-species allometric models developed based on four predictors,height(H),stem diameter(D),crown area(Ca),and wood density(ρ).As expected,the six species possessed greater biomass in their stems compared with branches,with the lowest biomass in the leaves.Species-specific allometric models that employed stem diameter and the combined variables of D~2H andρDH as predictors accurately estimated the components and total AGB,with R^(2) values from 0.602 and 0.971.A multi-species shrub allometric model revealed that wood density×diameter×height(ρDH)was the best predictor,with R^(2) values ranging from between 0.81 and 0.89 for the components and total AGB,respectively.These results indicated that height(H)and diameter(D)were effective predictors for the models to estimate the AGB of the six species,and the introduction of wood density(ρ)improved their accuracy.The optimal models selected in this study could be applied to estimate the biomass of shrubs and small trees in subtropical regions. 展开更多

Rice caryopses are enclosed by outer glumes.The size and dimension of the outer glume are the main determinants of caryopsis size.However,it is unclear whether caryopsis development is completely dependent on the size of the glume,or whether it can grow and expand autonomously despite the constraint of glume enclosure.We report the identification of a mutant line that produces normal-sized glumes with smaller mature caryopses that do not fill the entire glume cavity.The caryopsis phenotype in the pex1 mutant is caused by a reduction in cell size.Os PEX1,a leucine-rich repeat extensin gene,was highly expressed in the developing caryopsis.Overexpression of Os PEX1 driven by a constitutive promoter recapitulated the mutant phenotype,showing that the small-caryopsis phenotype is caused by overexpression of the Os PEX1 gene.Free amino acids,including several essential amino acids,and crude protein were increased in pex1 relative to the wild type,endowing pex1 with improved nutritional quality.Our results suggest that caryopsis development can be genetically uncoupled from maternally controlled glume development and that Os PEX1 might be a new resource for improving nutritional quality of rice cultivars. 展开更多

Mechanism of tobacco osmotin gene in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stress tolerance:A brief history

Plants are recurrently exposed to myriads of biotic and abiotic stresses leading to several biochemical and physiological variations that cause severe impacts on plant growth and survival.To overcome these challenges,plants activate two primary defense mechanisms,such as structural response(cell wall strengthening and waxy epidermal cuticle development)and metabolic changes,including the synthesis of anti-microbial compounds and proteins,especially the pathogenesis-related(PR)proteins.PR proteins are members of a super large family of defense proteins that exhibit antimicrobial activities.Their over-expression in plants provides tolerance to many abiotic and biotic stresses.PR proteins have been classified into 17 families,including PR-5–also called thaumatin-like proteins(TLPs)that involve osmotin and osmotin-like proteins(OLPs).Osmotin was first identified in tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum var.Wisconsin 38),and then its homolog proteins(OLPs)were reported from the whole plant kingdom.Osmotin and OLPs are ubiquitous in all fruits and vegetables.Their expression has been detected in various plant tissues and organs.The phylogenetic tree studies revealed that the osmotin group originated from spermatophytes.Moreover,the atomic structure of OLP has shown similarity to thaumatin and TLPs from monocot and eudicot species,which determines a strong evolutionary pressure in flowering plants for conserving thaumatin fold.This is associated with the role of these proteins against pathogens as defense molecules and to induce stress tolerance to plants against several biotic and abiotic factors.In this review,we have briefly described the development history of osmotin,including its function and mechanism to induce biotic and abiotic stress tolerance to plants. 展开更多

Glochidion(Phyllanthaceae;leafflower trees)is a genus of trees which is widely reported to be pollinated by leafflower moths(Gracillariidae:Epicephala)in temperate and subtropical Asia,Australia,and the Pacific islands.However,the pollination ecology of Glochidion is not well described from tropical Asia,the region where it is most species-rich at both local(<9 spp.)and regional(~200 spp.)scales.Here we report investigations of pollination biology and species-specificity of five Glochidion species in tropical Southeast Asia(Cambodia).Through nocturnal observations and fruit dissections,we find that at least three and likely five Glochidion species in Cambodia are pollinated by seed-parasitic leafflower moths.We find no evidence that any of these leafflower moths are non-mutualistic parasites,despite known examples of such parasites of this mutualism elsewhere in Asia.While the presence of a single larva in a fruit results in only a fraction of seeds being consumed,the presence of more than one larva per fruit-a frequent occurrence in some species—can result in almost all seeds within the fruit being infested.Multilocus phylogenetic analysis indicates that there are five different minimally monophyletic leafflower moth clades,each of which pollinates a unique Glochidion host species.Our results indicate that in its center of diversity in tropical Asia this system is an obligate pollination mutualism as previously described at the global margins of its distribution.These findings provide insights into the processes that generate and maintain biodiversity and maintain mutualism stability in plant-insect interactions in this biodiversity hotspot. 展开更多

Early growth analysis and evaluation of 21 Eucalyptus clones in Leizhou Peninsula

The growth, morphology, and wind resistance of 21 Eucalyptus clones were investigated and analyzed in Leizhou Peninsula, Zhanjiang city. The results showed that coefficient of variation of each index phenotype varied from 15.21%-42.46%. There were significant differences among the clones in growth indexes. The top five clones with high individual volume were JJ144, 2#, 28#, 9#, and JJ197. The morphological indexes were significantly different among the clones. There were also significant differences among the clones in wind resistance index, and the clones with good wind resistance were 28#, JJ162, JJ195 and JJ215, their preservation rate were more than 80%. It was found that tree height and DBH significantly correlated to individual volume, and stem form was significantly related to branch. Using the principal component analysis, it was determined that JJ144, 2#, 28#, 9# and JJ162 were the excellent clones with good performance in the Leizhou area. 展开更多

Pseudocerastium is a monotypic genus in Caryophyllaceae endemic to China.The genus has been widely accepted since it was described in 1998,however its phylogenetic position within Caryophyllaceae has never been studied.In the present study,the whole plastid genome and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer(ITS)sequences of Pseudocerastium stellarioides was obtained through genome skimming,and the phylogenetic position of the species was studied for the first time.Plastid phylogenomic analysis of Caryophyllaceae revealed that Pseudocerastium is clustered within the tribe Alsineae with strong support.Phylogenetic analyses based on an enlarged taxon sampling of Alsineae using five DNA regions(matK,rbcL,rps16 intron,trnL-F and ITS)revealed that P.stellarioides was nested deeply within Cerastium with strong support.Analyses of morphological character evolution suggest that the ancestral states in Alsineae include three styles and a six-lobed capsule at the apex,while both Cerastium and Pseudocerastium have five styles and ten lobes at the apex of the capsule,further supporting their close relationship.The species Pseudocerastium stellarioides is similar to Cerastium wilsonii in morphology,but differs in having villous indumentum on the lower part of the filaments and compressed globose seeds.Therefore,based on the present molecular and morphological evidence,the generic name Pseudocerastium is reduced here as a new synonym of Cerastium and the species P.stellarioides is transferred to Cerastium as C.jiuhuashanense. 展开更多

Global climate changes have significantly affected tree growth and forest structures and functions in some arid and semi-arid regions,which are becoming warmer and wetter.Due to natural factors such as climate and terrain,some tree species may form different forest patches at the edges of their distribution areas.However,how forest patches of various sizes respond to climate change is unclear.In this study,we collected 203 tree cores from six different sizes of forest patches at the edge of the distribution area of Picea crassifolia Kom.in the northeast Tibetan Plateau.And we used the dendrochronology method to study the response of tree growth and resilience in different forest patches to climate change from 1961 to 2020.We simultaneously measured the contents of nonstructural carbohydrates(NSC),total nitrogen and total phosphorus of tree needles.Our results showed that the growth of trees in small-and medium-size forest patches(0.8–18.6 ha)has increased significantly.The early growing season(May–July)minimum temperature was the most important climate factor driving the growth of small-and medium-sized patch trees.The early growing season maximum temperature was the most important climate factor that inhibited the growth of trees in the largest patches(362.8 ha).The growth of individual trees in medium forest patches was better and the correlation with annual minimum temperature,maximum temperature,precipitation,actual evapotranspiration,and palmer drought severity index was stronger.The higher NSC content,stronger photosynthesis,and higher nitrogen utilization efficiency in leaves might be one of the reasons for the better growth of trees in moderate forest patches.In extreme drought years,as the forest patch area increased,the overall trend of tree growth resistance showed a unimodal pattern,with the highest at a forest patch area of 7.1 ha,while the overall trend of tree growth recovery was opposite.Therefore,we should strengthen the management of trees in large forest patches to cope with climate change. 展开更多

Neolamarckia cadamba is an indigenous,timber-producing tree species in Southern China that plays an important role in the sustainable development of the local forestry industry.However,the geographic genetic variation across its natural distribution area in Southern China has yet to be characterized for best utilization.Here,we report the geographic genetic variation in growth and wood properties of N.cadamba from 10 provenances that represent the entire natural distribution of N.cadamba in Southern China.There was significant geographic variation in diameter breast height(DBH),height(H),volume(V),vessel length(VL),vessel diameter(VD),VL/VD,and wood basic density(WBD).The variation in tree volume across provenances was greater than that of other growth traits,indicating that volume has a greater potential for selection in provenance trials.The provenance heritabilities of growth traits and wood properties ranged from 0.59 to 0.67 and from 0.40 to 0.45,respectively.Trend surface analysis revealed that patterns of geographic variation associated with growth traits were weakly negatively correlated with those of wood properties.The pattern of geographic variation in growth traits showed a gradual increase from the periphery to the central region,whereas wood properties showed the opposite pattern,and latitude had the greatest effect on both.Wood property measurements suggested that the YNMS provenance produced superior timber wood,whereas the GXLZ,GXFCG,and GXNN provenances produced the best pulpwood.These provenances could potentially provide more valuable breeding materials for the genetic improvement of N.cadamba. 展开更多
