The purpose of this study was to examine this anecdotal relationship to provide preliminary evidence relevant to the potential benefits of PA on ADHD symptoms. Methods: Parents (n = 68) of children diagnosed with ADHD completed an lnternet survey assessing perceptions of how PA influences their child's symptoms. Results: A significantly greater percentage of parents reported that regular PA positively impacted symptoms. However, there were no uniform effects for all types of ADHD symptoms. The results indicate that there may be more positive benefits for symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity than for those of impulsivity. Conclusion: This is the first study to empirically document parents' perceptions of how PA influences ADHD and suggests that PA can be a viable strategy for reducing symptoms. PA may have greater benefits for specific symptoms of ADHD, providing critical information for developing PA interventions for children and adolescents.展开更多

Women presenting with knee pain were recruited into a cross-sectional correlation study (KOA, n = 9, age = 52 ± 4 yrs). Self report menstrual history, the Modified Baecke Questionnaire and the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) subjective data were collected. A fasting blood sample (follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α)), and urine catch (16α-hydroxyestrone and 2-hydroxyestrone) were collected. Gait analysis using an 8-camera motion analysis system assessed internal knee varus moment and foot progression angle. Pearson Product moments tested for associations between urinary 16α-hydroxyestrone and 2-hydroxyestrone, TNF-α, medial knee loading, and radiographic disease severity (Kellgren/Lawrence (K/L) radiographic score). Significant correlations were found within the hormonal biomarkers (r = 0.94, p p p = 0.31). No correlations were found for radiographic disease severity or TNF-α. The lack of association between hormonal and biomechanical variables could be due to large variability of the E2 metabolites seen in the menopause transition and the limited structural changes of initial staged knee OA.展开更多

The increased complexity of care required for older adults with a CI may negatively influence the attitudes and job satisfaction of healthcare practitioners working with this population. The current study is a part of a larger intervention study allowing patients with CI following a hip fracture access to rehabilitation care and implementing a patient-centred model to facilitate caring for this new population. This new model required a substantial change in the skillset and knowledge of healthcare practitioners. The focus of this study was to explore the impact on the healthcare practitioners of adopting this new model for providing care to older adults with a CI following a hip fracture. The attitudes, dementia knowledge, job satisfaction, and work stress of healthcare practitioners were the focus of evaluation. Key study findings showed that stress due to relationships with coworkers, workloads and scheduling, and the physical design and conditions at work were moderated post-intervention. Staff responses also improved for job satisfaction, biomedical knowledge of dementia, and degree of hopefulness about dementia. Although we cannot state conclusively that the our model was solely responsible for all the staff improvements observed post-intervention, our findings provide further support to the argument that patients with CI should be allowed access to rehabilitation care. Rehabilitation units need to provide education that utilizes a person-centred approach accepting of patients with CI, and focuses on areas that can bolster staff’s positive, dementia-sensitive attitudes. Ultimately, the aim is to create a culture that provides the highest standard of care for all patients, reduces work-related stress, increases job satisfaction, and leads to the highest quality of life for patients during and after rehabilitation.展开更多

PURPOSE: 1) To examine stage of readiness for planned physical activity;2) To compare estimated self-reported daily physical activity and exercise tolerance/capacity by stage of readiness;and 3) To determine the association between stages of readiness for planned physical activity, self-reported daily physical activity and exercise tolerance, in CHF patients. METHODS: One-hundred eleven CHF patients (Age: 53 ± 14 yrs;New YorkHeart Association class II/III) participated. Each participant’s stage of readiness for planned physical activity was assessed. Patients completed a self-reported daily physical activity questionnaire, and performed a six-minute walk test. RESULTS: Average left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was 30.12% ± 10.72%. Twelve patients were in Precontemplation (PC),29 inContemplation (C),30 inPreparation (PR),20 inAction (A), and20 inMaintenance (M). There were no differences in age and LVEF between stages. Those classified in A/M performed more minutes in activities > 3 METs. Average 6MWD was 349 ± 118 meters, with significant differences between stages (PC, C CONCLUSION: The majority of CHF patients are in pre-action stages of readiness for adoption of planned physical activity. Patients in pre-action are engaged in less daily activity and have lower exercise tolerance/capacity than those in A/M. Lower exercise tolerance/capacity suggests these patients are more fragile and at greater risk for complications and early mortality. Greater emphasis should be placed on strategies to move patients toward A/M.展开更多

METHODS: Thirty patients completed the McG ill Quality of Life questionnaire and the Spiritual Fitness Assessment survey, and were asked to classify themselves as "Religious" or "Non-Religious". After the questionnaires were completed, each patient underwent a comprehensive fitness assessment, which included assessments for VO2 max, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition, as well as height, weight, and resting heart rate and blood pressure. The data collected were averaged and analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test at the 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS: Of the 30 participants, 17 classified themselves as "religious"(R) and 13 classified themselves as "nonreligious"(NR). The R group had a higher body fat percentage and a lower VO2 max than the NR group. However, these results were not significant. It was also determinedthat the R group scored themselves significantly higher than the NR group on the Spiritual Fitness questionnaire, but reported significantly higher levels of depression and anxiety than their non-religious counterparts. CONCLUSION: Health beliefs did not necessarily back up health practice; specifically, those respondents who classified themselves as "religious" reported that their beliefs positively influenced their health behaviors, yet physiological and psychological data did not support this claim.展开更多

The purpose of this preliminary study was to examine the difference in cognitive performance between college students with and without ADHD and to explore the effects of acute exercise on multiple aspects of executive functions and on serum brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Methods: College students (normal: n = 10; ADHD: n = 10) performed the Stroop Test, Trail Making Test, and Digit Span Test prior to and after an acute exercise intervention. Blood samples were obtained prior to the pre-test cognitive test performance and then again after exercise and prior to the post-test cognitive test performance. Results: Students with ADHD exhibited impaired executive functions, particularly on inhibition. Additionally, while acute exercise improved all aspects of executive functions in those without ADHD, acute exercise only improved inhibitory performance for those with ADHD. Further, BDNF was not influenced by acute exercise regardless of the subjects' ADHD status. Conclusion: These results provide preliminary evidence for exercise as a potential adjunct treatment for benefitting inhibition in college students with ADHD.展开更多

文摘Background:One of the most life-threatening comorbidities in elderly cancer patients is cancer cachexia, which is characterized by the ongoing loss of skeletal muscular strength and mass and is also associated with aging. There is a lack of recommendations for optimal resistance training(RT) for those patients. The purpose of this study was to systematically review and quantify the effects of RT on muscular strength and hypertrophy in elderly cancer patients. Methods: Five electronic databases were searched(until January 2020) for studies that met the following criteria:(i) cancer patients aged>60 years;(ii) structured and supervised RT intervention for>6 weeks;and(iii) measured muscular strength and/or hypertrophy. Results:Thirteen studies(717 participants, average age=66 years) met the inclusion criteria.RT significantly increased muscular strength(mean effect size=0.87,95% confidence interval(95%CI):0.43-1.32,p <0.001) and did not significantly induce muscle hypertrophy(mean effect size=0.09,95%CI:-0.14 to 0.31,p=0.45).In subgroup analyses for muscle strength, higher weekly frequency was significantly associated with larger effect size.Egger’ s test showed no significant publication bias for the 2 outcomes. Conclusion:The results suggest that RT improves muscular strength but does not significantly induce muscle hypertrophy in elderly cancer patients.
文摘Background: Anecdotally, parents often report that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who engage in regular physical activity (PA) experience positive behavioral changes. PA may have greater benefits for specific symptoms of ADHD, providing critical information for developing PA interventions for children and adolescents.
文摘KEY POINTS A low-carbohydrate diet in athletes impairs their exercise tolerance and their ability to beneficially adapt to long-term physical training. Physical performance and mood state seem better maintained with a high vs. moderate carbohydrate diet, thus reducing the symptoms of overreaching and possibly overtraining.
文摘The purpose of this study was to determine the associations between urinary estradiol (E2) metabolite concentration and medial knee loading with radiographic disease severity in middle aged women with initial stage knee osteoarthritis (OA). The lack of association between hormonal and biomechanical variables could be due to large variability of the E2 metabolites seen in the menopause transition and the limited structural changes of initial staged knee OA.
文摘Until recently, older adults with a cognitive impairment (CI) who experienced a hip fracture were filtered from being admitted into active rehabilitation units. Ultimately, the aim is to create a culture that provides the highest standard of care for all patients, reduces work-related stress, increases job satisfaction, and leads to the highest quality of life for patients during and after rehabilitation.
文摘Purpose:Media exaggerations of health research may confuse readers’understanding, erode public trust in science and medicine, and cause disease mismanagement. This study built artificial intelligence(AI)models to automatically identify and correct news headlines exaggerating obesity-related research findings.Design/methodology/approach:We searched popular digital media outlets to collect 523 headlines exaggerating obesity-related research findings. The reasons for exaggerations include:inferring causality from observational studies, inferring human outcomes from animal research, inferring distant/end outcomes(e.g.,obesity)from immediate/intermediate outcomes(e.g.,calorie intake),and generalizing findings to the population from a subgroup or convenience sample. Each headline was paired with the title and abstract of the peer-reviewed journal publication covered by the news article. We drafted an exaggeration-free counterpart for each original headline and fined-tuned a BERT model to differentiate between them.We further fine-tuned three generative language models-BART,PEGASUS,and T5 to autogenerate exaggeration-free headlines based on a journal publication’s title and abstract.Model performance was evaluated using the ROUGE metrics by comparing model-generated headlines with journal publication titles.Findings:The fine-tuned BERT model achieved 92.5%accuracy in differentiating between exaggeration-free and original headlines.Baseline ROUGE scores averaged 0.311 for ROUGE-1,0.113 for ROUGE-2,0.253 for ROUGE-L,and 0.253 ROUGE-Lsum.PEGASUS,T5,and BART all outperformed the baseline. The best-performing BART model attained 0.447 for ROUGE-1,0.221 for ROUGE-2,0.402 for ROUGE-L,and 0.402 for ROUGE-Lsum.Originality/value:This study demonstrated the feasibility of leveraging AI to automatically identify and correct news headlines exaggerating obesity-related research findings.
文摘Background:There is a growing interest to understand the neurobiological mechanisms that drive the positive associations of physical activity and fitness with measures of cognitive performance. To better understand those mechanisms, several studies have employed eye-based measures(e.g., eye movement measures such as saccades, pupillary measures such as pupil dilation, and vascular measures such as retinal vessel diameter)deemed to be proxies for specific neurobiological mechanisms. However, there is currently no systematic review providing a comprehensive overview of these studies in the field of exercise-cognition science. Thus, this review aimed to address that gap in the literature. Methods:To identify eligible studies,we searched 5 electronic databases on October 23,2022.Two researchers independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias using a modified version of the Tool for the assEssment of Study qualiTy and reporting in EXercise(TESTEX scale, for interventional studies) and the critical appraisal tool from the Joanna Briggs Institute(for cross-sectional studies). Results:Our systematic review(n=35 studies) offers the following main findings:(a) there is insufficient evidence available to draw solid conclusions concerning gaze-fixation-based measures;(b) the evidence that pupillometric measures, which are a proxy for the noradrenergic system, can explain the positive effect of acute exercise and cardiorespiratory fitness on cognitive performance is mixed;(c) physical training-or fitness-related changes of the cerebrovascular system(operationalized via changes in retinal vasculature) are,in general, positively associated with cognitive performance improvements;(d) acute and chronic physical exercises show a positive effect based on an oculomotor-based measure function(operationalized via antisaccade tasks);and(e) the positive association between cardiorespiratory fitness and cognitive performance is partly mediated by the dopaminergic system(operationalized via spontaneous eye-blink rate). Conclusion:This systematic review offers confirmation that eye-based measures can provide valuable insigt into the neurobiological mechanisms that may drive positive associations between physical activity and fitness and measures of cognitive performance. However, due to the limited number of studies utilizing specific methods for obtaining eye-based measures(e.g.,pupillometry,retinal vessel analysis, spontaneous eye blink rate) or investigating a possible dose-response relationship, further research is necessary before more nuanced conclusions can be drawn.Given that eye-based measures are economical and non-invasive,we hope this review will foster the future application of eye-based measures in the field of exercise-cognition science.
文摘Background:Cognitive impairment is prevalent among older adults and results in degraded quality of life for older adults. As the population ages, this may cause a huge burden to society.Research has demonstrated that physical exercise is beneficial to cognitive function. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to critically assess the effect of Tai Chi exercise on global cognitive, executive, and memory functions in older adults. Methods:After a thorough electronic search and selection, eight studies were included in this meta-analysis with two cross-sectional and six intervention studies.Nine variables included in this meta-analysis were:mini mental status examination(MMSE),Alzheimer’s disease assessment scale-cognitive subscale(ADAS-cog),trailmaking test part A(TMA),trailmaking test part B(TMB),digit span test forward(DSF),digit span test backward(DSB),visual span test backward(VSB),verbal fluency test(VFT),and word delay recall test(WDR).The effect sizes and forest plots of these nine variables were generated. Results:Four(MMSE,DSB,VSB,and VFT)out of nine variables were significantly improved after Tai Chi exercise with the effect sizes ranged from 0.20 to 0.46(small to medium).MMSE represented global cognitive function, and DSB,VSB,and VFT represented memory function. Conclusion:Tai Chi as a mind-body exercise has the positive effects on global cognitive and memory functions, and more consistent positive effects were found on memory function, especially verbal working memory.
文摘Lymphedema is an atypical accumulation of high-proteinfluid located just beneath the skin, which often occurs in the arm or leg. Exercising with lymphedema was traditionally considered to be unsafe. However, recent research indicates that exercise may be beneficial to individuals with lymphedema. Studies indicate that exercise can improve the range of motion and strength of the afflicted limb(s), as well as overall fitness and functional quality of life, and can be performed without exacerbating symptoms of lymphedema.
文摘Few individuals with chronic heart failure (CHF) engage in regular physical activity. Greater emphasis should be placed on strategies to move patients toward A/M.
文摘AIM: To examine the relationship between spiritual fitness and overall physical fitness, and their resulting impact on feelings of depression and anxiety in individuals being treated for cancer. CONCLUSION: Health beliefs did not necessarily back up health practice; specifically, those respondents who classified themselves as "religious" reported that their beliefs positively influenced their health behaviors, yet physiological and psychological data did not support this claim.

文摘Purpose:To identify co-produced multi-stakeholder perspectives important for successful widespread physically active learning(PAL) adoption and implementation. Methods:A total of 35 stakeholders(policymakers n=9;commercial education sector,n=8;teachers,n=3;researchers,n=15) attended a design thinking PAL workshop.Participants formed 5 multi-disciplinary groups with at least 1 representative from each stakeholder group. Each group, facilitated by a researcher, undertook 2 tasks:(1) using Post-it Notes, the following question was answered:within the school day, what are the opportunities for learning combined with movement?and(2) structured as a washing-line task, the following question was answered:how can we establish PAL as the norm? All discussions were audio-recorded and transcribed.Inductive analyses were conducted by 4 authors. After the analyses were complete, the main themes and subthemes were assigned to 4 predetermined categories:(1) PAL design and implementation,(2) priorities for practice,(3) priorities for policy,and(4) priorities for research. Results:The following were the main themes for PAL implementation:opportunities for PAL within the school day, delivery environments, learning approaches, and the intensity of PAL.The main themes for the priorities for practice included teacher confidence and competence, resources to support delivery, and community of practice. The main themes for the policy for priorities included self-governance,the Office for Standards in Education,Children’s Services, and Skill, policy investment in initial teacher training, and curriculum reform. The main themes for the research priorities included establishing a strong evidence base,school-based PAL implementation, and a whole-systems approach. Conclusion:The present study is the first to identify PAL implementation factors using a combined multi-stakeholder perspective. To achieve wider PAL adoption and implementation, future interventions should be evidence based and address implementation factors at the classroom level(e.g.,approaches and delivery environments),school level(e.g.,communities of practice),and policy level(e.g.,initial teacher training).
文摘Training specificity is imperative for successful performance of the elite athlete.Virtual reality(VR)has been successfully applied to a broad range of training domains. However,to date there is little research investigating the use of VR for sport training. The purpose of this study was to address the question of whether virtual reality(VR)training can improve real world hockey shooting performance.Twenty four volunteers were recruited and randomly selected to complete the virtual training intervention or enter a control group with no training.Four primary types of data were collected:(1)participant’s experience with video games and hockey,(2)participant’s motivation toward video game use,(3)participant’s technical performance on real-world hockey,and(4)participant’s technical performance in virtual hockey.One-way multivariate analysis of variance(ANOVA)indicated that the intervention group demonstrated significantly more real-world hockey accuracy(F(1,24)=15.43,p<0.01,E.S.=0.56)while shooting on goal than their control group counterparts(intervention M accuracy=54.17%,SD=12.38,control M accuracy=46.76%,SD=13.45).One-way multivariate analysis of variance(MANOVA)repeated measures indicated significantly higher outcome scores on real-world accuracy(35.42%versus 54.17%;ES=1.52)and velocity(51.10 mph versus 65.50 mph;ES=0.86)of hockey shooting on goal. This research supports the idea that virtual training is an effective tool for increasing real-world hockey skill.
文摘<div style="text-align:justify;"> <span style="font-family:Verdana;"><strong>Objective:</strong> To test the hypothesis that the type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) phenotype in an indigenous population is characterized by proportionally short legs and obesity. <strong>Methods:</strong> Anthropometric characteristics were compared in females and males with T2DM (n = 20, n = 8, respectively) and without T2DM (n = 117, n = 93, respectively). Factor analysis derived dimensions were regressed on T2DM in logistic regression. <strong>Results:</strong> Weight, sitting height ratio and hip circumference were significantly lower (p < 0.0001) in females, while waist: hip ratio was significantly higher among women and men with T2DM (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.008, respectively). Arm circumference, triceps skinfold, arm muscle circumference, and right and left grip strength were significantly lower among T2DM women (p < 0.0001 for each). Five rotated principal components accounted for 86.7% of the variance: muscular (grip) strength (29.6%), body mass (27.9%), central adiposity (10.7%), body height (9.3%), and trunk length (9.2%). Regression of factors on T2DM status among females indicated muscle strength (OR = 0.16, 95% CI: 0.04 - 0.71) and central adiposity (OR = 13.76, 95% CI: 3.80 - 49.83) were predictors of T2DM. In males, muscle strength (OR = 0.28, 95% CI: 0.07 - 1.08, p < 0.06) and central adiposity significantly predicted T2DM (OR = 3.17, 95% CI: 95% 1.11 - 9.04, p < 0.008). <strong>Conclusion: </strong>Reduced muscle strength/mass and increased central adiposity characterize the T2DM phenotype.</span> </div>
文摘Purpose: The relationship between acute exercise and executive functions in college students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has not been clearly established. Conclusion: These results provide preliminary evidence for exercise as a potential adjunct treatment for benefitting inhibition in college students with ADHD.
文摘Technological advances have increased the prevalence of sedentary behaviors, as physical inactivity has become one of the leading risk factors of death worldwide;a situation that burdens the health care system with preventable health disorders. 1 Increased incidence of disease decrease the quality of life, even among children, because diseases that formerly onset during adulthood are now impacting people early in their lives, as well as at the end of their lives,"by cumulative damage over time or by the biological embedding of adversities during sensitive developmental periods"(p.1).2.
