The connecting rod is one of the most important moving components in an internal combustion engine. The present work determined the possibility of using aluminium alloy 7075 material to design and manufacture a connecting rod for weight optimisation without losing the strength of the connecting rod. It considered modal and thermal analyses to investigate the suitability of the material for connecting rod design. The parameters that were considered under the modal analysis were: total deformation, and natural frequency, while the thermal analysis looked at the temperature distribution, total heat flux and directional heat flux of the four connecting rods made with titanium alloy, grey cast iron, structural steel and aluminium 7075 alloy respectively. The connecting rod was modelled using Autodesk inventor2017 software using the calculated parameters. The steady-state thermal analysis was used to determine the induced heat flux and directional heat flux. The study found that Aluminium 7075 alloy deformed more than the remaining three other materials but has superior qualities in terms of vibrational natural frequency, total heat flux and lightweight compared to structural steel, grey cast iron and titanium alloy. 展开更多

The application of magnesium alloys to automobiles is increasing due to their superior specific strength and specific stiffness.In this study,an upper sheet of AZ31 magnesium alloy and a lower sheet of cold-rolled steel were joined by self-piercing riveting(SPR),a method commonly used to join automotive panels.A cross-shaped specimen was fabricated with a punching force of 35 kN,which exhibited the best joint strength for the SPR joint specimen geometry.Monotonic and fatigue strengths were evaluated using cross-shaped specimens at loading angles of 0°,45°,and 90°.The load amplitude corresponding to the fatigue endurance limit was assumed to be at 106 cycles,and the fatigue ratios(=fatigue endurance limit/static strength)at the loading angles of 0°,45°,and 90°are 22%,13%,and 9%,respectively.For all three loading angle specimens,fatigue cracks initiated at the triple point where the rivet shank,the upper sheet and the lower sheet are in contact with each other,with the cracks propagating through the thickness of the upper sheet and ultimately leading to fracture.The fatigue lifetimes were evaluated through the von-Mises stress,maximum principal stress,and equivalent stress intensity factor.It was found that the fatigue lifetimes could be evaluated most appropriately through the maximum principal stress. 展开更多

Generation of trochoid is normally realized by external rolling method, namely a circle rotating on a fixed circle without slipping. This paper proposes derivative process of the trochoid profile by means of internal rolling method, which is that internal surface of a circle contacts with a fixed circle and rotates around it without slipping. Moreover the instantaneous flow rate can be obtained by numerically calculating the change ratio of area between the inner and outer rotors in the outlet region of the gerotor pump, which avoids to complicatedly derivative process. 展开更多

Converting customer needs into specific forms and providing consumers with services are crucial in product design.Currently,conversion is no longer difficult due to the development of modern technology,and various measures can be applied for product realization,thus increasing the complexity of analysis and evaluation in the design process.The focus of the design process has thus shifted from problem solving to minimizing the total amount of information content.This paper presents a New Hybrid Axiomatic Design(AD)Methodology based on iteratively matching and merging design parameters that meet the independence axiom and attribute constraints by applying trimming technology,the ideal final results,and technology evolution theory.The proposed method minimizes the total amount of information content and improves the design quality.Finally,a case study of a rehabilitation robot design for hemiplegic patients is presented.The results indicate that the iterative matching and merging of related attributes can minimize the total amount of information content,reduce the cost,and improve design efficiency.Additionally,evolutionary technology prediction can ensure product novelty and improve market competitiveness.The methodology provides an excellent way to design a new(or improved)product. 展开更多

Cu bump was transferred using a focused laser pulse for microelectronic packaging.An Nd:YAG laser pulse (maximum energy of 500 mJ;wavelength of 1064 nm;fluences of 0.4-2.1 kJ/cm2) was irradiated on a sacrificial absorption layer with copper coating.The focused laser beam induced plasma between the semi-transparent donor slide and the sacrificial layer,causing a shock wave.The shock wave pressure pushed the Cu layer and transferred material to deposit a bump on substrate.A beam-shaper was used to produce uniform pressure at the interface to reduce fragmentation of the transferred material on the substrate.The calculated shock wave pressure with respect to laser fluence was 1-3 GPa.A Cu bump of diameter of 200 μm was successfully deposited at laser fluence of 0.6 kJ/cm 2.The pressure control at the sacrificial layer using a laser pulse was critical to produce a bump with less fragmentation.The technique can be applied to forming Cu bump for an interconnecting process in electronics. 展开更多

Gerotor pumps are a kind of internal gear pump, widely used in applications of lubricating system of on-road or off-road engines. Normally their outer rotors are the circular arc profile while their inner rotor profile is the conjugate curve of the outer rotor. This research focuses on how to derive the combined trochoidal profile of a gerotor pump. The hypocycloidal and epicycloidal profile of the inner rotor is generated at first. And then the profile of the outer rotor, based on the inner rotor profile, is obtained by analytical approach and computationally graphical approach. The paper provides feasibility to develop the unconventional profile of a gerotor pump. 展开更多

Line heating method is widely used to manufacture curved surfaces in ship building. The main factors governing the quality of the manufactured products are the moving velocity of the heating source, heating strength, and heating ways. In this study, the temperature distributions of the heated plate were investigated with the condition that the line heating process was automatic. The temperature variations were also investigated with the changes of those three variables. The numerical results showed that the peak temperature decreased as the moving velocity of the heating source increased. It also revealed that the peak temperatures changed linearly with the changes of the heating source. 展开更多

The effects of roughness geometries and relative roughness height at the slip flow regime to investigate the thermal and hydraulic performances of microchannel have been considered in the present article using a thermal Lattice Boltzmann Method(TLBM).A two dimensional 9-bit(D2Q9)single relaxation time(SRT)model is used to simulate this problem.In micro-flows,the local density variation is still relatively small,but the total density changes,therefore,in order to account this density variation and its effect on the kinematic viscosityν,a new relaxation time proposed by Niu et al.[13]is used.The roughness geometry is modeled as a series of square and circular riblets with a relative roughness height from 0%to 10%of the channel height.The friction coefficients in terms of Poiseuille number(Pn)and the dimensionless heat transfer rate in terms of Nusselt number(Nu)have been discussed in order to analyze the roughness effects.The thermal-hydraulic performance(η)is calculated considering the simultaneous effects of thermal and fluid friction(pressure drop)at the slip flow regime at Knudsen number,Kn,ranging from 0.01 to 0.10 with other controlling parameters for both kind of geometries.The results have been compared with previous published works and it is found to be in very good agreement. 展开更多

Metasurfaces are composed of periodic subwavelength nanostructures and exhibit optical properties that are not found in nature.They have been widely investigated for optical applications such as holograms,wavefront shaping,and structural color printing,however,electron-beam lithography is not suitable to produce large-area metasurfaces because of the high fabrication cost and low productivity.Although alternative optical technologies,such as holographic lithography and plasmonic lithography,can overcome these drawbacks,such methods are still constrained by the optical diffraction limit.To break through this fundamental problem,mechanical nanopatteming processes have been actively studied in many fields,with nanoimprint lithography(NIL)coming to the forefront.Since NIL replicates the nanopattem of the mold regardless of the diffraction limit,NIL can achieve sufficiently high productivity and patterning resolution,giving rise to an explosive development in the fabrication of metasurfaces.In this review,we focus on various NIL technologies for the manufacturing of metasurfaces.First,we briefly describe conventional NIL and then present various NIL methods for the scalable fabrication of metasurfaces.We also discuss recent applications of NIL in the realization of metasurfaces.Finally,we conclude with an outlook on each method and suggest perspectives for future research on the high-throughput fabrication of active metasurfaces. 展开更多

A facile and scalable lithography-free fabrication technique,named solution-processable electrode-material embedding in dynamically inscribed nanopatterns(SPEEDIN),is developed to produce highly durable electronics.SPEEDIN uniquely utilizes a single continuous flow-line manufacturing process comprised of dynamic nanoinscribing and metal nanoparticle solution coating with selective embedding.Nano-and/or micro-trenches are inscribed into arbitrary polymers,and then an Ag nanoparticle solution is dispersed,soft-baked,doctor-bladed,and hard-baked to embed Ag micro-and nanowire structures into the trenches.Compared to lithographically embossed metal structures,the embedded SPEEDIN architectures can achieve higher durability with comparable optical and electrical properties and are robust and power-efficient even under extreme stresses such as scratching and bending.As one tangible application of SPEEDIN,we demonstrate a flexible metal electrode that can operate at 5 V at temperatures up to 300℃even under the influence of harsh external stimuli.SPEEDIN can be applied to the scalable fabrication of diverse flexible devices that are reliable for heavy-duty operation in harsh environments involving high temperatures,mechanical deformations,and chemical hazards. 展开更多

This paper focuses on a newly developed transmission for a milli-scale eight-legged crawling robot called OriSCO.The transmission allows intuitive steering by directly changing the direction of the propulsion force.The transmission is based on the constrained spherical six-bar linkage.The constrained spherical six-bar linkage passes only reciprocating motion out of the motor’s rotating motion,allowing the crawling legs to kick the ground and obtain propulsion.Steering is achieved by adjusting the geometric constraints of the spherical six-bar using a servomotor,allowing the direction of propulsion to be changed.As a result,the OriSCO can move along the ground at a speed of 2.15 body lengths/s,and the robot is 60 mm long. 展开更多
