Thermal Hydrolysis of Wastewater Sludge Followed by Fungal Fermentation for Organic Recovery and Hyphae Fiber Production

Wastewater sludge creates a difficult environmental problem for many large cities.This study developed a three-phase innovative strategy for sludge treatment and reduction,including thermal hydrolysis,fungal fermentation,and anaerobic digestion.Increasing the temperature during the treatment from 140 to 180℃ significantly improved the sludge reduction and organic release efficiencies(p<0.05,one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA)for the triplicate experiments at each temperature).After two cycles of thermal hydrolysis,the overall volatile solid reduction ratios of the sludge were 36.6%,47.7%,and 58.5%for treatment at 140,160,and 180℃,respectively,and the total organic carbon(TOC)conversion efficiency reached 28.0%,38.0%,and 45.1%,respectively.The highest concentrations of carbohydrates and proteins were obtained at 160℃ in sludge liquor,whereas the amount of humic substances significantly increased for the treatment at 180℃(p<0.05,one-way ANOVA for the triplicate experiments at each temperature)due to the Maillard reaction.Fungal fermentation of the hydrolyzed sludge liquor with Aspergillus niger converted the waste organics to valuable fiber materials.The biomass concentration of fungal hyphae reached 1.30 and 1.27 g·L^(-1) in the liquor of sludge treated at 140 and 160C,corresponding to organic conversion ratios of 24.6%and 24.0%,respectively.The fungal hyphae produced from the sludge liquor can be readily used for making papers or similar value-added fibrous products.The paper sheets made of hyphae fibers had a dense structure and strong strength with a tensile strength of 10.75 N·m·g^(-1).Combining fungal fermentation and anaerobic digestion,the overall organic utilization efficiency can exceed 75%for the liquor of sludge treated at 160℃. 展开更多

A new kind of governing equations for water hammer based on the elastic column theory was proposed and adopted to analyse water hammer phenomenon in the pipe system with a vertical column surge chamber and water level fluctuation in the surge chamber during pressure transient. The wrongness existing in the classical governing equations for water hammer was analysed. A typical reservoir valve pipe system was chosen as an example to verify the new governing equations numerically and experimentally. The finite difference method based on the method of characteristics was used to solve numerically the nonlinear characteristic equations. The temporal evolutions of transient volume flux and head and of water level fluctuation for various surge chamber configurations were worked out, assuming that the air in the surge chamber are compressible. The relevant experiment was conducted to verify the new governing equations and numerical method. The numerical and experimental results show that the new governing equations are valid and the conventional assumption that the pressure head at the base of a surge chamber equals that of the static head above it during pressure transient is not always valid. The surge chamber generally reises the period of transient pressure wave in pipe system, reduces the maximum pressure envelope and lifts the minimum envelope substantially. The water level fluctuation in the surge chamber was numerically and experimentally observed. Increasing the size of the surge chamber and/or decreasing the initial air pressure in the surge chamber enhance the effectiveness of the surge chamber in suppressing pressure wave. 展开更多

The hydrodynamic behavior of diatom aggregates has a significant influence on the interactions and flocculation kinetics of algae. However, characterization of the hydrodynamics of diatoms and diatom aggregates in water is rather difficult. In this laboratory study, an advanced visualization technique in particle image velocimetry (PIV) was employed to investigate the hydrodynamic properties of settling diatom aggregates. The experiments were conducted in a settling column filled with a suspension of fluorescent polymeric beads as seed tracers. A laser light sheet was generated by the PIV setup to illuminate a thin vertical planar region in the settling column, while the motions of particles were recorded by a high speed charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. This technique was able to capture the trajectories of the tracers when a diatom aggregate settled through the tracer suspension. The PIV results indicated directly the curvilinear feature of the streamlines around diatom aggregates. The rectilinear collision model largely overestimated the collision areas of the settling particles. Algae aggregates appeared to be highly porous and fractal, which allowed streamlines to penetrate into the aggregate interior. The diatom aggregates have a fluid collection efficiency of 10%-40%. The permeable feature of aggregates can significantly enhance the collisions and flocculation between the aggregates and other small particles including algal cells in water. 展开更多

Physiological responses of four herbaceous plants to aluminum stress in South China

Different plants have physiological responses under Al stress,but there is no systematic study to examine physiological responses of herbaceous plants under Al stress.The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Al on physiological characteristics of four herbaceous plants,which distributed in red soil area in South China,and to analyze the differences in physiological responses to Al stress between the four herbaceous plants.Four herbaceous plants(Pharbitis nil,Cassia occidentlis,Echinochloa colonum and Aeschynomene indica)were used,and the seed germi-nation percentage,the contents of chlorophyll,proline,and malondialdehyde(MDA),membrane permeability(MP),soluble sugar,and activities of peroxides(POD)and cata-lase(CAT)in leaves under five Al^(3+)treatments(0,80,400,2000,and 10000 mg/L)were assayed with the sand culture method.The results showed remarkable effects of Al^(3+)on physiological characteristics of these four herbaceous plants.The seeds of all the four species could not germinate at 10000 mg/L,and the growth of all plants were retarded under the 2000 mg/L Al^(3+)treatment.Compared with the control,2000 mg/L Al^(3+)significantly(P<0.05)reduced the con-tents of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll a+b,and increased the contents of MDA and MP.The content of proline in-creased very significantly(P<0.01)and activities of POD and CAT were depressed.The contents of MDA and MP in leaves of P.nil and A.indica decreased,and the activities of POD and CAT in leaves of the two plants increased under 80 mg/L and 400 mg/L.However,the changes in C.occidentlis leaves were opposite to those of the above two plants.The changes in leaves of E.colonum were similar to those of P.nil and A.indica at 80 mg/L,but were opposite to those at 400 mg/L Al^(3+).It is suggested that plants with higher ac-tivities of POD and CAT,more contents of chlorophyll and proline,and lower contents of MDA and MP consequently improve the tolerance to Al stress under low and middle Al treatments. 展开更多
