Attention constitutes a fundamental psychological feature guiding our mental effort toward specific objects, concurrent with processes such as memory, reasoning, and imagination. Visual attention, crucial for selecting surrounding information, often decreases in older adults and patients with cerebrovascular disorders. Effective methods to enhance attention are scarce. Here, we investigated whether color information influences visual attention and brain activity during task performance, utilizing EEG. We examined 13 healthy young adults (seven women and six men;mean age: 21.2 ± 0.58 years) using 19-electrode electroencephalograms to assess the impact of color information on visual attention. The Clinical Assessment for Attention cancellation test was conducted under the black, red, and blue color conditions. Wilcoxon’s signed-rank test was used to assess differences in task performance (task time and error) between conditions. Spearman’s rank correlation was utilized to examine the correlation in power levels between task performance and color conditions. Significant variations in total task errors were observed among color conditions. The black condition exhibited the highest error frequency (0.7 ± 0.9 times), followed by the red condition (0.5 ± 0.8 times), with the lowest error frequency occurring in the blue (0.2 ± 0.4 times) condition (black vs. red: P = 0.03;black vs. blue: P = 0.00;red vs. blue: P = 0.032). No time difference was observed. The black condition showed negative delta and high-gamma correlations in the central electrodes. The red condition revealed positive alpha and low-gamma correlations in the frontal and occipital areas. Although no correlations were observed in the blue condition, it enhanced attentional performance. Positive alpha and low-gamma waves might be crucial for spotting attentional errors in key areas. Our findings provide insights into the effects of color information on visual attention and potential neural correlates associated with attentional processes. In conclusion, our study implies a connection between color information and attentional task performance, with blue font associated with the most accurate performance. 展开更多

[Purpose] This study aimed to evaluation of the Tokyo cognitive assessment (Toca) for predicting cognitive impairment in rehabilitation users. [Method] The variables of age, BMI, educational background, Toca for 36 rehabilitation users and 22 healthy elder were assessed. We compared cognitive functions in rehabilitation users who need support and healthy elders. [Results] Of the Toca 1 to 11 trials, there was a significant difference other than 9, 10 rials. The Toca scores with 8 points higher were significantly higher in healthy elders than in rehabilitation users. The area under the receiver-operator curve (AUC) for predicting mild cognitive impairment (MCI) by the Toca was 0.874. Using a cut-off point of 19/20, the Toca demonstrated a sensitivity of 83.9% and a sensitivity of 85.0% in diagnosing MCI. [Conclusion] The Toca is a brief cognitive screening tool with high sensitivity and specificity for detecting MCI as currently conceptualized in rehabilitation users. 展开更多

Background:Proprioceptive accuracy refers to the individual’s ability to perceive proprioceptive information, that is,the information referring to the actual state of the locomotor system, which originates from mechanoreceptors located in various parts of the locomotor system and from tactile receptors located in the skin.Proprioceptive accuracy appears to be an important aspect in the evaluation of sensorimotor functioning;however,no widely accepted standard assessment exists. In this systematic review, our goal was to identify and categorize different methods that are used to assess different aspects of proprioceptive accuracy. Methods:A literature search was conducted in 5 different databases(PubMed,SPORTDiscus,PsycINFO,ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink).Results:Overall,1139 scientific papers reporting 1346 methods were included in this review. The methods assess 8 different aspects of proprioception:(a)the perception of joint position,(b)movement and movement extent,(c)trajectory,(d)velocity, and the sense of(e)force,(f)muscle tension,(g)weight, and(h)size. They apply various paradigms of psychophysics(i.e.,the method of adjustment, constant stimuli, and limits). Conclusion:As the outcomes of different tasks with respect to various body parts show no associations(i.e.,proprioceptive accuracy is characterized by site-specificity and method-specificity),the appropriate measurement method for the task needs to be chosen based on theoretical considerations and/or ecological validity. 展开更多

This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of fleshes from two Actinidia chinensis(ACF), pericarps from two A. chinensis(ACP), and fleshes with pericarps from two A. chinensis(ACFP)on high fructose(HF)-instigated dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and fatty acid metabolism disorders in rats. In general, the above abnormalities were improved after 10 weeks intervention of ACF, ACP, and ACFP. Especially, ACFP considerably ameliorated HF-induced abnormal changes in body weight gain, serum TC, TG, LDL-C and HDL-C levels, as well as serum and hepatic SFAs, MUFAs and PUFAs contents. ACFP also alleviated HF-induced hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia, stabilized HF-caused increase in hepatic MDA and serum ALT, AST levels, and restored HF-declined hepatic T-SOD and GSH-Px activities. Besides, histopathology of the liver further endorsed the protective effects of ACFP on hepatocellular injury. Moreover, ACFP increased HF-dropped acetic, propionic and butyric acid levels. Overall, ACFP employs more efficacious protective effects against HF-induced metabolic disorders and liver damage than ACF and ACP. This study delivers a scientific foundation for developing kiwifruit(counting peel)-based dietary supplements for those with glucolipid-metabolic disorders and liver damage. 展开更多

Background: Previous studies have shown that Hand Care Treatment, a form of passive horticultural therapy, is effective in preventing dementia and MCI and reducing the rate of progression. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, various activity restrictions were implemented in Japan from March 2020, and the number of elderly people without care and rehabilitation will the number of elderly people without care and rehabilitation has been increasing. Purpose: Progression of cognitive, physical, and mental disability was examined for long-term horticultural therapy study subjects by level of care required. Methods: One subject who had been diagnosed with dementia and was residing in an elderly care facility and consented to a long-term study was selected. In addition to assessments using various evaluation forms, data recorded from time to time, including changes in care plans, were analyzed using text mining methods. Results: This subject tended to progress slowly from 1 to 2 care needs, but progressed from 3 to 5 care needs over a 2-year period. The results of the assessment chart test showed that cognitive impairment and IADL decreased with each increase in the level of care required, but DBD remained the same at the time of admission, even at 5 years of care required. A comparison of HCT and aroma intervention with and without aroma intervention during the nursing care level 1 showed that the improvement in physical, mental, and cognitive function was expected to be higher at the time of intervention. Text-mining inspections have revealed that during the period of nursing care level 1 - 5, active horticultural therapy techniques, and passive horticultural therapy techniques such as HCT and brain rejuvenation aromatherapy were found to betweenness centrality with each other. Conclusion: From the results of mean score of DBD, although the nursing care level has progressed from 1 to a maximum of 5, it can be concluded that the burden of care has not become heavier. There was no tendency for the progression of cognitive impairment in this subject to be faster than in the general AD population, despite the influences of Covid-19. The results indicated that caregiving techniques and active and passive horticultural therapy techniques in Japanese welfare facilities for the elderly are expected to be effective in preventing the progression of cognitive impairment. 展开更多

Confounding effect is a critical issue in clinical research of otolaryngology because it can distort the research's conclusion. In this review, we introduce the definition of confounding effect, the methods of verifying and controlling the effect. Confounding effect can be prevented by research's design, and adjusted by data analysis. Clinicians would be aware and cautious about confounding effect in their research. They would be able to set up a research's design in which appropriate methods have been applied to prevent this effect. They would know how to adjust confounding effect after data collection. It is important to remember that sometimes it is impossible to eliminate confounding effect completely, and statistical method is not a master key. Solid research knowledge and critical thinking of our brain are the most important in controlling confounding effect. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: Researches prove that the treatment of cerebral palsy by botulinus toxin (BTX-A) can improve effect and prolong effective duration. Current intensity is the important factor during injection.OBJECTIVE: To observe the changes of motor function and muscular intensity of children with spastic cerebral palsy after injecting BTX-A and analyze correlation between current intensity and effective duration. DESIGN: Cases control trial before and after nerves block.SETTING: Capital University of Medical Sciences, China Rehabilitation Research Center.PARTICIPANTS: From June 2002 to November 2004, 14 children with spastic cerebral palsy were treated by BTX-A block. All children were hospitalized in the Children Rehabilitation Department of China Rehabilitation Research Center. The children included 9 male and 5 female, and ranged from 4 to 13 years old, and average age was (6±2) years. Muscular tension ranged from grade 1 to grade 3. The diagnosis and the tape of cerebral palsy based on standard of the Fist Nationwide Cerebral Palsy Symposium, and all children were diagnosed with electroencephalogram (EEG), CT and MRI, and permitted by their guardians.METHODS: ① Locating and calculation: To locate block points by G6805-2A electro-therapeutic apparatus (Shanghai Huayi Electronic Instrument Plant) at the least stimulating current (continuous wave; impulse frequency; 2.667-83.333 Hz; current intensity: 0-6 mA; voltage: 6 V) to touch off muscles contraction. The current intensity of each point was recorded, and the average current intensity of each patient was calculated at the same time. ② Dose of BTX-A: Basing upon the spastic degree and weight of patients, the dose was made certain: dose (IU)=(scores of Modified Ashworth Scale +2.5) ×weight (kg). The number of the block points was in all 4. The dose of injection ranged from 50 IU to 160 IU with the average of (73.6±25.8) IU. The BTX-A was made by Lanzhou Institute of Biological Products, and each bottle contains 100 IU BTX-A. Muscular tension was evaluated by Modified Ashworth Scale. The scale ranged from grade 0 to grade 4, and the scores were from 0 to 4. The higher the scores were, the higher the muscular tension was. ③ Effect: Changes of muscular tension were evaluated by modified Ashworth Scale before and after block. Motor function was evaluated by Physician Rating Scale (PRS) before and after treatment. It contained Gait pattern, Hindfoot (ankle) position (stance-floor contact), Hindfoot position (foot strike), Knee position (degree of recurvation), Crouch and Speed of gait. The scores ranged from 0 to 14. The higher the points were, the better the motor function was. ④ Effective duration: The duration was definited by the recovering of the Modified Ashworth Scale. ⑤ Statistic analysis: Firstly, the current intensity and the effect duration were analyzed by One-Sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, the current intensity: Z = 0.456, P = 0.985, the effective duration: Z = 0.557, P = 0.915. Both data were normal distribution. Secondly, both data were analyzed by Linear Regression. The efficiency of the BTX-A block was analyzed by paired-samples t test.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① Changes of motor function of muscular tension; ② correlation between current intensity and effective duration. RESULTS: Fourteen children with spastic cerebral palsy were all involved in the final analysis. ① Therapeutic effect: The average score of Ashworth scale after block was lower than that before block [(1.02±0.34) points vs. (2.12±0.48) points, t = 3.644, P < 0.01]. The average score of RPS after block was higher than that before block [(9.75±2.78) points vs. (6.16±0.58) points, t =13.222, P < 0.01]. ② Relation between the current intensity and the effective duration: The current intensity was (0.1857±0.0506) mA, and the effective duration was (26.36±4.48) weeks. The current intensity was negative correlation with effective duration (r = -0.775, P = 0.01).CONCLUSION: ① BTX-A occlusion can decrease muscular tension and improve motor function of lower limbs of children with spastic cerebral palsy. ② The lower the current intensity is, the longer the effective duration is. 展开更多

The mdx mouse is a model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy(DMD),a fatal progressive muscle wasting disease caused by dystrophin deficiency, and is used most widely in preclinical studies.Mice with dystrophin deficiency, however, show milder muscle strength phenotypes than humans. In human, the introduction of a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)kit revealed a more than 700-fold increase in titin N-terminal fragment levels in the urine of pediatric patients with DMD.Notably, the urinary titin level declines with aging, reflecting progression of muscle wasting. In mouse, development of a highly sensitive ELISA kit has been awaited. Here,a sandwich ELISA kit to measure titin N-terminal fragment levels in mouse urine was developed. The developed kit showed good linearity, recovery, and repeatability in measuring recombinant or natural mouse titin N-terminal fragment levels. The titin N-terminal fragment concentration in the urine of mdx mice was more than 500-fold higher than that of normal mice.Urinary titin was further analyzed by extending the collection of urine samples to both young(3-11 weeks old)and aged(56-58 weeks old)mdx mice. The concentration in the young group was significantly higher than that in the aged group. It was concluded that muscle protein breakdown is active and persistent in mdx mice even though the muscle phenotype is mild. Our results provide an opportunity to develop DMD treatments that aim to alleviate muscle protein breakdown by monitoring urinary titin levels. 展开更多

Occupational Therapy is critically underdeveloped in many developing countries in Asia. There are many internal and external barriers to the growth of the profession, including lack of willpower and lack of professional representation in the government. This article aims to communicate the postulations for its stagnation across developing countries in Asia. An analytical reflection and historical review of the barriers to the growth of occupational therapy in Malaysia was conducted. Leaders in the field who met the inclusion criteria, collaborated to shape the reconstructions using an occupational reconstruction approach. The reconstruction guided key critical reflections on the roots of daily experiences to relive the cooperative action to problem solve the issues encountered by the profession in Malaysia. Medical hegemony was found as the active suppressor of the health professions, and can be seen as being beyond reproach in the Asian’s medical model that created occupational injustices. These occupational injustices hinder the growth of Occupational Therapy, do not serve the patients, science or the overall healthcare system. Autocratic governance has a debilitating impact on health sciences and its workforce especially around badly oppressed Asian countries. A greater systematic approach is needed to examine the extent, effect, problem solve and remediate the magnitude of injustices over the last decade—to make way for an inclusive and affordable care system. 展开更多

Regarding the worsening of symptoms in people with dementia, 8% answered that they “accept more” and 32% answered that they “recognize a minority”. In the previous research report (Open Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation Vol.8 No.3), we examined whether hand care therapy (HCT) as one of the passive horticultural therapy was effective in preventing dementia/MCI. Start of the test in August 2018 (I: BL) to February 2020 (VII: 18M) was, the use of HCT was to be effective in preventing dementia and MCI illness and slowing progression. Due to the COVID19 pandemic, VIII (24M) was evaluated in August 2020, and IX (27M) also measured ANS during activity. At that time, they divided into the Group E who had refrained from welfare facilities for the elderly due to the influence of COVID19 and the Group F who HCT continued. In the evaluation of VIII (24M), it was found that the cognitive function of the Group E was significantly reduced compared to VII, and Group F did not show a significant decrease. ADL decreased and depressive symptoms increase by continuing a life with less going out due to the influence of COVID 19 regardless of the use of the facility. However, there are no studies that comprehensively verify the stress reduction effect, cognitive function, vital signs, etc. in the elderly requiring long-term care. In this study, we focused on Himekuromoji (</span><i><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Lindera</span></i><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> <i>lancea</i></span><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> ), which grows naturally in Japan and has no verification cases and decided to verify the possibility of aromatherapy using that essential oil. As a result, olfactory stimulation by </span><i><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Lindera</span></i><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> <i>lancea</i></span><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> aroma stabilizes the mood and emotions of the client and suppressed the rise in blood pressure. In sentiment analysis, four emotions were quantified using a wearable device. Although the effects of worker emotions on labor productivity have already been elucidated using the same device as in this study, emotional quantification by aromatherapy intervention is unprecedented. There were no significant differences in the four emotions depending on the intervention period and test section, but we were able to capture changes in emotions due to differences in recreational activities. In addition, it is considered that the client was able to spend about 30% of the activity time in a relaxed manner. It was expected that this aromatherapy as complementary and alternative medicine could contribute to the good emotional control of all the people involved. The COVID 19 pandemic has led to restrictions on human-to-human interaction, so the importance of emotional control represented by stress control is increasing for all humankind. Therefore, it was expected that this aromatherapy as complementary and alternative medicine could contribute to the good emotional control of all the people involved.</span></span> 展开更多

Purpose: To compare and examine motor and cognitive functions in people who require support, and in healthy elders. Method: The variables of age, BMI, educational background, blood pressure, grip strength, knee extension, gait speed, MMSE, and subjective health feeling for 36 rehabilitation users and 22 healthy elders were assessed. We compared and examined motor and cognitive functions in rehabilitation users who need support and healthy elders. Results: The percentage of MMSE scores with 27 points or higher and that of subjective health feeling with 3 points or higher were significantly higher in healthy elders than in rehabilitation users. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly higher in rehabilitation users than in healthy elders. Gait speed and MMSE scores were significantly higher in healthy elders than rehabilitation users. Conclusion: Gait speed could be used for physical fitness in elders. Gait speed was the best physical fitness measurement for elders. Gait speed of rehabilitation users was strongly related to MMSE scores. Gait speed could be a determinant of MMSE scores. 展开更多

Some therapies for elderly people are based on the philosophy that the activities to be carried out will also be stimulating to the senses. On the other hand, the dynamics of the senses play</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">s</span><span style="font-family:""><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> an important role beyond mere reason and sensibility in people’s lives. The hand care therapy that used natural herb oil is the alternative medicine that utilized a plant or its essential oil, which is used in various application scenes. In our past study, the hand care therapy that used natural herb oil demonstrated the effectiveness for elderly people. In this study, we examined influences on psychologi</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">cal condition of the side to treatment on. On the evaluation with question p</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">aper, baseline of POMS factor and TMD average were similar to pre-HCT. In post-HCT, T-A, A-H, F and C which were negative factors decreased than pre significantly. The forward factor V did not have significant difference, but the mean increased. Furthermore, the TMD (total mood distance) score generally </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">decreased and changed in the balance of good feelings. On the objective ev</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">aluation, temporal change differences in the PNS (Parasympathetic Nervous Sys</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">tem) during the relaxed state and following the induced stress state were m</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">onitored using ECG (electrocardiograph). The SNS (Sympathetic Nervous System) of students in HCT has decreased, and the PNS was confirmed to increase. For the tendency in SNS, the changes during the HCT were small. There were no significant changes in rSO</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">2</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> (regional oxygen saturation) by HCT. BVI (blood volume information) showed significantly big values at left hand treatment and after HCT than BL, indicating that peripheral circulation of the blood flow quantity of the student increased. Generally, it was shown that the subjective emotional evaluation of the hand care treatment side, the objective autonomic nervous system change, and the coronal blood flow were all good. In Japan, the global pandemic of COVID</span></span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">-</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">19 disrupts human interaction, and there are concerns about physical, cognitive, and mental deterioration. The use of hand care therapy has been shown to be an effective technique for building quality communication for both recipients and performers.</span> 展开更多

Background:Adults with obesity may display disturbed cardiac chronotropic responses during cardiopulmonary exercise testing, which relates to poor cardiometabolic health and an increased risk for adverse cardiovascular events. It is unknown whether cardiac chronotropic incompetence(CI)during maximal exercise is already present in obese adolescents and,if so,how that relates to cardiometabolic health.Methods:Sixty-nine obese adolescents(body mass index standard deviation score=2.23±0.32,age=14.1±1.2 years;mean±SD)and 29lean adolescents(body mass index standard deviation score=-0.16±0.84,age=14.0±1.5 years)performed a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing from which indicators for peak performance were determined. The resting heart rate and peak heart rate were used to calculate the maximal chronotropic response index.Biochemistry(lipid profile, glycemic control, inflammation, and leptin)was studied in fasted blood samples and during an oral glucose tolerance test within obese adolescents.Regression analyses were applied to examine associations between the presence of CI and blood or exercise capacity parameters, respectively, within obese adolescents. Results:CI was prevalent in 32 out of 69 obese adolescents(46%)and 3 out of 29 lean adolescents(10%).C-reactive protein was significantly higher in obese adolescents with CI compared to obese adolescents without CI(p=0.012).Furthermore,peak oxygen uptake and peak cycling power output were significantly reduced(p<0.05)in obese adolescents with CI vs.obese adolescents without CI.The chronotropic index was independently related to blood total cholesterol(standardized coefficientβ=-0.332;p=0.012)and C-reactive protein concentration(standardized coefficientβ=-0.269;p=0.039).Conclusion:CI is more common in the current cohort of obese adolescents, and is related to systemic inflammation and exercise intolerance. 展开更多
