Feather,as a by-product of the poultry industry,has long been treated as a solid waste,which causes environmental and economic problems.In this work,the hydrolyzed feather keratin(HFK)was extracted from the chicken feather using a cost-effective method of alkali-extraction and acid-precipitation by applying urea and sodium sulfide.The aim was development and characterization of the eco-friendly films based on the HFK with variable glycerol contents by a thermoplastic process.The thermal analysis showed that high temperature and high pressure improved the compatibility between the glycerol and the HFK molecules.Also it was shown that the addition of water is necessary in the hot-pressing process of films.The FT-IR analysis indicated that the formation of the new hydrogen bonds between HFK and glycerol.By increasing the glycerol content,the film tensile strength(σ_b)decreases from 10.5 MPa to 5.7 MPa and the solubility increases from 15.3% to 20.9%,while the elongation at break(εb)achieves the maximum value of 63.8% for the film with 35% glycerol.The swelling was just below 16.9%at 25 °C for 24 h,suggesting a good stability of the films in water.The water vapor permeability(WVP)varied between 3.02 × 10^(-10)g · m^(-2)· s^(-1)· Pa^(-1)and 4.11 × 10^(-10)g · m^(-2)· s^(-1)· Pa^(-1)for the films with 20% and40% glycerol,respectively.The HFK film was uniform,translucent and tough,which could be used in packaging and agricultural field. 展开更多

Facile fabrication of durable superhydrophobic fabrics by silicon polyurethane membrane for oil/water separation

Nowadays, oil contamination has become a major reason for water pollution, and presents a global environmental challenge. Although many efforts have been devoted to the fabrication of oil/water separation materials, their practical applications are still hindered by their weak durability, poor chemical tolerance,environmental resistance, and potential negative impact on health and the environment. To overcome these drawbacks, this work offers a facile method to fabricate the eco-friendly and durable oil/water separation membrane fabrics by alkaline hydrolysis and silicon polyurethane coating. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy results demonstrate that silicon polyurethane membrane could be coated onto the surface of hydrolyzed polyester fabric and form a micro-/nano-scaled hierarchical structure. Based on this, the modified fabric could have a stable superhydrophobic property with a water contact angle higher than 150°, even after repeated washing and mechanical abrasion 800 times, as well as chemical corrosion. Moreover, the modified fabrics show excellent oil/water separation efficiency of up to 99% for various types of oil–water mixture. Therefore, this durable, eco-friendly and cost-efficient superhydrophobic fabric has great potential in large-scale oil/water separation. 展开更多

1,3-Dioleoyl-2-palmitoylglycerol(OPO)has been a hotspot of functional oils research in recent years,but due to the high cost of sn-1,3 specific lipase in enzymatic synthesis and the lack of biocatalyst stability,large... 1,3-Dioleoyl-2-palmitoylglycerol(OPO)has been a hotspot of functional oils research in recent years,but due to the high cost of sn-1,3 specific lipase in enzymatic synthesis and the lack of biocatalyst stability,large-scale industrial application is difficult.In this study,the prepared magnetic ZnFe_(2)O_(4) was functionalized with dopamine to obtain ZnFe_(2)O_(4)@PDA,and the nano-biocatalyst ZnFe_(2)O_(4)@PDA@RML was prepared by immobilizing sn-1,3 specific lipase of Rhizomucor miehei lipase(RML)via a cross-linking method.The existence of RML on ZnFe_(2)O_(4)@PDA was confirmed by XRD,FTIR,SEM,and TEM.This strategy proved to be simple and effective because the lipase immobilized on magnetic nanoparticles could be quickly recovered using external magnets,enabling reuse of the lipase.The activity,adaptability to a high temperature,pH value,and operational stability of immobilized RML were superior to those of free RML.After optimizing the synthesis conditions,the OPO yield was 42.78%,and the proportion of PA at the sn-2 position(PA-Sn2)was 54.63%.After the first four cycles,the activity of ZnFe_(2)O_(4)@PDA@RML was not significantly affected.The magnetically immobilized lipase has good thermal stability,long-term storage stability,reusability,and high catalytic activity.It can be used as a green and efficient biocatalyst to synthesize the OPO functional lipid. 展开更多
