In most coastal and estuarine areas, tides easily cause surface erosion and even slope failure, resulting in severe land losses, deterioration of coastal infrastructure, and increased floods. The bio-cementation technique has been previously demonstrated to effectively improve the erosion resistance of slopes.Seawater contains magnesium ions(Mg2+)with a higher concentration than calcium ions(Ca2+);therefore,Mg2+and Ca2+were used together for bio-cementation in this study at various Mg2+/Ca2+ratios as the microbially induced magnesium and calcium precipitation(MIMCP)treatment.Slope angles, surface strengths, precipitation contents, major phases, and microscopic characteristics of precipitation were used to evaluate the treatment effects. Results showed that the MIMCP treatment markedly enhanced the erosion resistance of slopes.Decreased Mg2+/Ca2+ratios resulted in a smaller change in angles and fewer soil losses, especially the Mg2+concentration below 0.2 M.The decreased Mg2+/Ca2+ratio achieved increased precipitation contents, which contributed to better erosion resistance and higher surface strengths.Additionally, the production of aragonite would benefit from elevated Mg2+concentrations and a higher Ca2+concentration led to more nesquehonite in magnesium precipitation crystals. The slopes with an initial angle of 53°had worse erosion resistance than the slopes with an initial angle of 35°,but the Mg2+/Ca2+ratios of 0.2:0.8,0.1:0.9,and 0:1.0 were effective for both slope stabilization and erosion mitigation to a great extent. The results are of great significance for the application of MIMCP to improve erosion resistance of foreshore slopes and the MIMCP technique has promising application potential in marine engineering. 展开更多

Soil disturbance includes the change of stress state and the damage of soil structure. The field testing indices reflect the combined effect of both changes and it is difficult to identify the soil structure disturbance directly from these indices. In the present study, the small-strain shear modulus is used to characterize soil structure disturbance by normalizing the effective stress and void ratio based on Hardin equation. The procedure for evaluating soil sampling disturbance in the field and the further disturbance during the subsequent consolidation process in laboratory test is proposed, and then validated by a case study of soft clay ground.Downhole seismic testing in the field, portable piezoelectric bender elements for the drilled sample and bender elements in triaxial apparatus for the consolidated sample were used to monitor the shear wave velocity of the soil from intact to disturbed and even remolded states. It is found that soil sampling disturbance degree by conventional thin-wall sampler is about 30%according to the proposed procedure, which is slightly higher than that from the modified volume compression method proposed by Hong and Onitsuka(1998).And the additional soil disturbance induced by consolidation in laboratory could reach about 50%when the consolidation pressure is far beyond the structural yield stress, and it follows the plastic volumetric strain quite well. 展开更多

The composite pile consisting of core-pile and surrounding cement-enhanced soil is a promising pile foundation in recent years. However, how and to what extent the cement-enhanced soil influences the ultimate lateral resistance has not been fully investigated. In this paper, the ultimate lateral resistance of the composite pile was studied by finite element limit analysis(FELA)and theoretical upper-bound analysis. The results of FELA and theoretical analysis revealed three failure modes of laterally loaded composite piles. The effects of the enhanced soil thickness, strength, and pile-enhanced soil interface characteristics on the ultimate lateral resistance were studied. The results show that increasing the enhanced soil thickness leads to a significant improvement on ultimate lateral resistance factor(N P),and there is a critical thickness beyond which the thickness no longer affects the N P.Increasing the enhanced soil strength induced 6.2%-232.6%increase of N P.However,no noticeable impact was detected when the enhanced soil strength was eight times higher than that of the natural soil. The maximum increment of N P is only 30.5%caused by the increase of interface adhesion factor(a).An empirical model was developed to calculate the N P of the composite pile, and the results show excellent agreement with the analytical results. 展开更多

Coral sandy soils widely exist in coral island reefs and seashores in tropical and subtropical regions.Due to the unique marine depositional environment of coral sandy soils, the engineering characteristics and responses of these soils subjected to monotonic and cyclic loadings have been a subject of intense interest among the geotechnical and earthquake engineering communities. This paper critically reviews the progress of experimental investigations on the undrained behavior of coral sandy soils under monotonic and cyclic loadings over the last three decades. The focus of coverage includes the contractive-dilative behavior, the pattern of excess pore-water pressure(EPWP)generation and the liquefaction mechanism and liquefaction resistance, the small-strain shear modulus and strain-dependent shear modulus and damping, the cyclic softening feature, and the anisotropic characteristics of undrained responses of saturated coral sandy soils. In particular, the advances made in the past decades are reviewed from the following aspects:(1)the characterization of factors that impact the mechanism and patterns of EPWP build-up;(2)the identification of liquefaction triggering in terms of the apparent viscosity and the average flow coefficient;(3)the establishment of the invariable form of strain-based,stress-based,or energy-based EPWP ratio formulas and the unique relationship between the new proxy of liquefaction resistance and the number of cycles required to reach liquefaction;(4)the establishment of the invariable form of the predictive formulas of small strain modulus and strain-dependent shear modulus;and(5)the investigation on the effects of stress-induced anisotropy on liquefaction susceptibility and dynamic deformation characteristics.Insights gained through the critical review of these advances in the past decades offer a perspective for future research to further resolve the fundamental issues concerning the liquefaction mechanism and responses of coral sandy sites subjected to cyclic loadings associated with seismic events in marine environments. 展开更多

Earthquake-induced slope failures are common occurrences in engineering practice and pre-stressed anchor cables are an effective technique in maintaining slope stability, especially in areas that are prone to earthquakes.Furthermore, the soil at typical engineering sites also exhibit unsaturated features.Explicit considerations of these factors in slope stability estimations are crucial in producing accurate results. In this study, the seismic responses of expansive soil slopes stabilized by anchor cables is studied in the realm of kinematic limit analysis.A modified horizontal slice method is proposed to semi-analytically formulate the energy balance equation. An illustrative slope is studied to demonstrate the influences of suction, seismic excitations and anchor cables on the slope stability. The results indicate that the stabilizing effect of soil suction relates strongly to the seismic excitation and presents a sine shape as the seismic wave propagates. In higher and steeper slopes, the stabilizing effect of suction is more evident. The critical slip surface tends to be much more shallow as the seismic wave approaches the peak and vice versa. 展开更多

When the geological environment of rock masses is disturbed, numerous non-persisting open joints can appear within it.It is crucial to investigate the effect of open joints on the mechanical properties of rock mass. However,it has been challenging to generate realistic open joints in traditional experimental tests and numerical simulations. This paper presents a novel solution to solve the problem.By utilizing the stochastic distribution of joints and an enhanced-fractal interpolation system(IFS)method, rough curves with any orientation can be generated. The Douglas-Peucker algorithm is then applied to simplify these curves by removing unnecessary points while preserving their fundamental shape.Subsequently, open joints are created by connecting points that move to both sides of rough curves based on the aperture distribution.Mesh modeling is performed to construct the final mesh model. Finally, the RB-DEM method is applied to transform the mesh model into a discrete element model containing geometric information about these open joints.Furthermore, this study explores the impacts of rough open joint orientation, aperture, and number on rock fracture mechanics. This method provides a realistic and effective approach for modeling and simulating these non-persisting open joints. 展开更多

Soil-bentonite (SB) vertical slurry cutoff wall is a useful treatment for urban industrial contaminated sites. Due to the clay heavy metal interaction, significant changes would occur in the engineering behavior of SB cutoff walls. However, previous study is limited to kaolinitic soils or montmorillonitic soils along using solidum chloride and/or calcium chloride as target contaminant. In this work, a series of oedometer tests were conducted to investigate the effects of lead (Pb) on the compressibility and the permeability of kaolin-bentonite (KB) mixtures, a simplified model of in-situ SB cutoff wall backfills. In addition, sedimentation tests were conducted to interpret the mechanism controlling the change of compressibility and permeability from the perspective of soil fabric. The Pb-contaminated KB mixtures for oedometer tests and sedimentation tests were prepared with bentonite contents of 0, 5%, 10%, and 15% by dry mass, and they were mixed with pre-determined volume of lead nitrate solution based on designed Pb concentration and solid-to-solution ratio. The Pb concentration was controlled as 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, 10, and 50 mg/g with a solid-to-solution ratio of approximate 0.5. The prepared KB mixtures with bentonite contents of 0, 5%, and 10% were chosen for the sedimentation tests. They were freeze-dried and mixed with DDI with a solid-to-solution ratio of 10 g/100 mL. The results indicate that pH, compressibility, and permeability of KB mixture changed considerably with respect to Pb concentration. It is concluded that the fabric of KB mixture, depending on the particle particle interaction subjected to different ranges of pH and Pb concentration, governs the sedimentation behavior and permeability. The results of liquid limit (wL ) cannot be explained in terms of the sedimentation behavior since it is only ionic-dependent. 展开更多

Engineering property of kaolin clay contaminated by diesel oil was studied through a series of laboratory experiments.Oil contents(mass fraction) of 4%,8%,12%,16% and 20% were selected to represent different contamination degrees, and the soil specimens were manually prepared through mixing and static compaction method.Initial water content and dry density of the test kaolin clay were controlled at 10% and 1.58 g/cm^3,respectively.Test results indicate that since part of the diesel oil will be released from soil by evaporation, the real water content should be derived through calibration of the quasi water content obtained by traditional test method. As contamination degree of the kaolin clay increases, both liquid limit and plastic limit decrease, but there's only a slight increase for plasticity index.Swelling pressure of contaminated kaolin clay under confined condition will be lowered when oil-content gets higher.Unconfined compressive strength(UCS) of the oil-contaminated kaolin clay is influenced by not only oil content but also curing period.Increase of contamination degree will continually lower UCS of the kaolin clay specimen. In addition, electrical resistivity of the contaminated kaolin clay with given water content decreases with the increase of oil content. However, soil resistivity is in good relationship with oil content and UCS.Finally, oil content of 8% is found to be a critical value for engineering property of kaolin clay to transit from water-dominated towards oil-dominated characteristics. 展开更多

Safety evaluation of toppling rock slopes developing in reservoir areas is crucial. To reduce the uncertainty of safety evaluation, this study developed a composite cloud model, which improved the combination weights of the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and criteria importance through intercriteria correlation (CRITIC) methods. A safety evaluation system was developed according to in situ monitoring data. The backward cloud generator was used to calculate the numerical characteristics of a cloud model of quantitative indices, and different virtual clouds were used to synthesize some clouds into a generalized one. The synthesized numerical characteristics were calculated to comprehensively evaluate the safety of toppling rock slopes. A case study of a toppling rock slope near the Huangdeng Hydropower Station in China was conducted using monitoring data collected since operation of the hydropower project began. The results indicated that the toppling rock slope was moderately safe with a low safety margin. The composite cloud model considers the fuzziness and randomness of safety evaluation and enables interchange between qualitative and quantitative knowledge. This study provides a new theoretical method for evaluating the safety of toppling rock slopes. It can aid in the predication, control, and even prevention of disasters. 展开更多

This study presents a hybrid framework to predict stability solutions of buried structures under active trapdoor conditions in natural clays with anisotropy and heterogeneity by combining physics-based and data-driven modeling.Finite-element limit analysis(FELA)with a newly developed anisotropic undrained shear(AUS)failure criterion is used to identify the underlying active failure mechanisms as well as to develop a numerical(physics-based)database of stability numbers for both planar and circular trapdoors.Practical considerations are given for natural clays to three linearly increasing shear strengths in compression, extension, and direct simple shear in the AUS material model. The obtained numerical solutions are compared and validated with published solutions in the literature.A multivariate adaptive regression splines(MARS)algorithm is further utilized to learn the numerical solutions to act as fast FELA data-driven surrogates for stability evaluation. The current MARS-based modeling provides both relative importance index and accurate design equations that can be used with confidence by practitioners. 展开更多

Coral sand is widely encountered in coastal areas of tropical and subtropical regions.Compared with silica sand,it usually exhibits weaker performance from the perspective of engineering geology. To improve the geomechanical performance of coral sand and meet the requirement of foundation construction in coastal areas,a novel alkali activation-based sustainable binder was developed. The alkaliactivated slag(AAS)binder material was composed of ground granulated blast-furnace slag(GGBS)and hydrated lime with the amendment of biochar,an agricultural waste-derived material. The biocharamended AAS stabilized coral sand was subjected to a series of laboratory tests to determine its mechanical, physicochemical, and microstructural characteristics. Results show that adding a moderate amount of biochar in AAS could improve soil strength, elastic modulus, and water holding capacity by up to 20%,70%,and 30%,respectively.Moreover,the addition of biochar in AAS had a marginal effect on the sulfate resistance of the stabilized sand, especially at high biochar content. However, the resistance of the AAS stabilized sand to wet-dry cycles slightly deteriorated with the addition of biochar.Based on these observations,a conceptual model showing biochar-AAS-sand interactions was proposed,in which biochar served as an internal curing agent,micro-reinforcer,and mechanically weak point. 展开更多

In this study, the Beibu earth fissure site in the northeastern part of Weihe Basin, which contains four nearly parallel earth fissures, was studied.A long straight microtremor measuring line, containing 49 measuring points across four earth fissures, was established to investigate the dynamic response of this site using Fourier spectrum, response acceleration spectrum,Arias intensity, and HVSR analyses. The main results are as follows:(1)The fundamental frequencies of 44 measuring points obtained from HVSR analysis are concentrated within 1.67 Hz-2.25 Hz,and the existence of the earth fissures has little effect on the fundamental frequency changes.(2)There is an amplification effect near a single earth fissure. The dynamic responses are large at the measuring points near the earth fissure, and the values decrease with increasing distance from the earth fissure. In areas between two adjacent earth fissures, these values decrease and are even lower than those in sites without amplification effects.(3)In this earth fissure site, the general area(or less affected area)and affected areas were delineated based on the amplification effect. In engineering applications, construction design should avoid these affected areas and existing structures should be reinforced to satisfy the seismic fortification requirements. 展开更多

Additional stress formed by postconstruction buildings in loess-filling areas affects water infiltration in soil and causes soil deformation. To investigate this effect, under constant water head, vertical infiltration tests on compacted loess with two initial dry densities for different applied vertical stresses were developed using vertical stresscontrollable one-dimensional soil columns. The timehistory curves of vertical deformation, wetting front depth, cumulative infiltration depth, volumetric water content(VWC)and suction were measured, and the soil-water characteristic curves(SWCCs)were determined. The results showed that:(1)the infiltration ability of the soil column weakens with increasing applied vertical stress and initial dry density;(2)vertical deformation increases rapidly at first and then tends to be stable slowly at the consolidation and wetting-induced deformation stage, and is positively correlated with applied vertical stress and is negatively correlated with initial dry density. The stability time of wetting-induced deformation and the corresponding wetting front depth increase with the increase of applied vertical stress, while they decrease obviously when initial dry density increases;(3)the influence of applied vertical stress on soilwater characteristics in soil columns with various initial dry densities is related to the deformation depth of soil column. The VG(Van Genuchten)model is suitable for fitting the SWCCs at different monitoring positions.A normalized SWCC model introducing the applied vertical stress was proposed for each initial dry density using the mathematical relationship between the fitting parameters and the applied vertical stress. 展开更多

Soil strain is the key parameter to control the elasto-plastic deformation and even the failure processes. To overcome the defect that the strain of the model soil is always smaller than that of the prototype in Iai′s generalized scaling law(GSL),a modified scaling law was proposed based on Iai′s GSL to secure the same dynamic shear strain between the centrifuge model and the prototype by modulating the amplitude and frequency of the input motion at the base.A suite of dynamic centrifuge model tests of dry sand level ground was conducted with the same overall scaling factor(λ=200)under different centrifugal accelerations by using the technique of“modeling of models”to validate the modified GSL.The test results show that the modified GSL could achieve the same dynamic strain in model as that of the prototype, leading to better modeling for geotechnical problems where dynamic strain dominates the response or failure of soils. Finally, the applicability of the proposed scaling law and possible constraints on geometry scaling due to the capability limits of existing centrifuge shaking tables are discussed. 展开更多

The electrical resistivity method was verified as an optional technique to monitor the change of mesostructure of saturated soils. To investigate the change laws of resistivity and analyze the reliquefaction meso-mechanism during the consecutive liquefaction process, five successive impact liquefaction tests were performed in a one-dimensional cubical chamber. The resistivity variation and excess pore water pressure(EPWP)were measured. The results indicate that the excess pore water pressure experienced four stages:quick increase stage, slow dissipation stage, rapid dissipation stage, and stability stage.Meanwhile,a swift decrease of resistivity emerged before the start of the rapid dissipation stage of EPWP,and then an increasing trend of resistivity is demonstrated with the densification of soil.It is proved that the vertical pore connectivity of liquefied sand is better than its random deposit state, based on a comparative study of porosity calculated from the settlement and resistivity of sand after each test. 展开更多

Calcareous sand is widely present in coastal areas around the world and is usually considered as a weak and unstable material due to its high compressibility and low strength.Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation(MICP)is a promising technique for soil improvement. However, the commonly adopted bio-augmented MICP approach is in general less compatible with the natural soil environment. Thus, this study focuses on the bio-stimulated MICP approach, which is likely to enhance the dominance of ureolytic bacteria for longer period and thus is deemed more efficient. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the compressibility of calcareous sand treated by bio-stimulated MICP approach. In the current study,a series of one-dimension compression tests was conducted on bio-cemented sand pre-pared via bio-stimulation with different initial relative densities(D r).Based on the obtained compression curves and particle size distribution(PSD)curves, the parameters including cementation content, the coefficient of compressibility(a v),PSD,relative breakage(B r),and relative agglomeration(A r)were discussed. The results showed that a v decreased with the increasing cementation content. The bio-cemented sand prepared with higher initial D r had smaller(approximately 20%e70%)a v values than that with lower initial D r.The specimen with higher initial D r and higher cementation content resulted in smaller B r but larger A r.Finally,a conceptual framework featuring multiple contact and damage modes was proposed. 展开更多

The interaction between soil and marine structures like submarine pipeline/pipe pile/suction caisson is a complicated geotechnical mechanism process. In this study, the interface is discretized into multiple mesoscopic contact elements that are damaged randomly throughout the shearing process due to the natural heterogeneity. The evolution equation of damage variable is developed based on the Weibull function, which is able to cover a rather wide range of distribution shapes by only two parameters, making it applicable for varying scenarios.Accordingly,a statistical damage model is established by incorporating Mohr–Coulomb strength criterion,in which the interfacial residual strength is considered whereby the strain softening behavior can be described.A concept of“semi-softening”characteristic point on shear stress–displacement curve is proposed for effectively modeling the evolution of strain softening. Finally,a series of ring shear tests of the interfaces between fine sea sand and smooth/rough steel surfaces are conducted. The predicted results using the proposed model are compared with experimental data of this study as well as some results from existing literature, indicating that the model has a good performance in modeling the progressive failure and strain softening behavior for various types of soil–structure interfaces. 展开更多

The overall carbonation of MgO-admixed soil provides not only an efficient and environmentally friendly technique for improving soft ground but also a permanently safe solution for CO_(2) sequestration. To evaluate the carbon sequestration potential and promote the carbonation application in soil improvement,a laboratory-scale model investigation is designed under pressurized carbonation considering the influences of MgO dosage and CO_(2) ventilation mode(way). The temperature, dynamic resilience modulus, and dynamic cone penetration(DCP)were tested to assess the carbonation treatment effect. The physical, strength, and microscopic tests were also undertaken to reveal the evolution mechanisms of CO_(2) migration in the MgO-carbonated foundation. The results indicate that the temperature peaks of MgO-treated foundation emerge at w20 h during hydration, but occur at a distance of 0e25 cm from the gas source within 6 h during carbonation. The dynamic resilience moduli of the model foundation increase by more than two times after carbonation and the DCP indices reduce dramatically. As the distance from the gas inlet increases, the bearing capacity, strength, and carbon sequestration decrease, whereas the moisture content increases.Compared to the end ventilation, the middle ventilation produces a higher carbonation degree and a wider carbonation area. The cementation and filling of nesquehonite and dypingite/hydromagnesite are verified to be critical factors for carbonation evolution and enhancing mechanical performances. Finally, the overall carbonation model is described schematically in three stages of CO_(2) migration. The outcomes would help to facilitate the practical application of CO_(2) sequestration in soil treatment. 展开更多

Reef limestone is a biogenic sedimentary rock widely distributed in coral reef areas, acting as an important foundation for coast construction. Due to its special biogenic origin, reef limestone is different from conventional rocks both in terms of rock structure and mechanical properties. In this study, mesoscale uniaxial compression experiments with five different loading directions were conducted on two kinds of reef limestones from the Maldives Islands and the South China Sea, respectively. The real-time high-resolution videos and images of failure processes were recorded simultaneously to investigate the fracture evolution and fracture surface roughness of reef limestones. It demonstrated that the reef limestones belonged to extremely soft to soft rocks, and their uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values fluctuated with high discreteness. The mesoscale mechanical properties of reef limestones were highly anisotropic and mainly controlled by pore structure. The occurrence of dissolution pores in reef limestone tended to intensify mechanical anisotropy. With the integration of the fracture initiation and propagation features of reef limestones, it is supposed that the intrinsic mechanism of anisotropy was probably attributed to the differences in coral growth direction and dissolution. Furthermore, the quantified fracture surface roughness was revealed to have a good consistency with density and UCS for the reef limestones from the South China Sea. The findings are helpful for providing theoretical and experimental references for engineering construction in coral reef areas. 展开更多

The grid-based multi-velocity field technique has become increasingly popular for simulating the Material Point Method(MPM)in contact problems. However, this traditional technique has some shortcomings, such as(1)early contact and contact penetration can occur when the contact conditions are unsuitable,and(2)the method is not available for contact problems involving rigid-nonrigid materials, which can cause numerical instability. This study presents a new hybrid contact approach for the MPM to address these limitations to simulate the soil and structure interactions. The approach combines the advantages of point-point and point-segment contacts to implement contact detection, satisfying the impenetrability condition and smoothing the corner contact problem. The proposed approach is first validated through a disk test on an inclined slope. Then, several typical cases, such as granular collapse, bearing capacity, and deformation of a flexible retaining wall, are simulated to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed approach compared with FEM or analytical solutions. Finally, the proposed method is used to simulate the impact of sand flow on a deformable structure. The results show that the proposed contact approach can well describe the phenomenon of soil-structure interaction problems. 展开更多
