Cracks coalescence mechanism and cracks propagation paths in rock-like specimens containing pre-existing random cracks under compression 被引量:18

The mechanism of cracks propagation and cracks coalescence due to compressive loading of the brittle substances containing pre-existing cracks (flaws) was modeled experimentally using specially made rock-like specimens from Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC). The breakage process of the specimens was studied by inserting single and double flaws with different inclination angles at the center and applying uniaxial compressive stress at both ends of the specimen. The first crack was oriented at 50&#176; from the horizontal direction and kept constant throughout the analysis while the orientation of the second crack was changed. It is experimentally observed that the wing cracks are produced at the first stage of loading and start their propagation toward the direction of uniaxial compressive loading. The secondary cracks may also be produced in form of quasi-coplanar and/or oblique cracks in a stable manner. The secondary cracks may eventually continue their propagation in the direction of maximum principle stress. These experimental works were also simulated numerically by a modified higher order displacement discontinuity method and the cracks propagation and cracks coalescence were studied based on Mode I and Mode II stress intensity factors (SIFs). It is concluded that the wing cracks initiation stresses for the specimens change from 11.3 to 14.1 MPain the case of numerical simulations and from 7.3 to 13.8 MPa in the case of experimental works. It is observed that cracks coalescence stresses change from 21.8 to 25.3 MPa and from 19.5 to 21.8 MPa in the numerical and experimental analyses, respectively. Comparing some of the numerical and experimental results with those recently cited in the literature validates the results obtained by the proposed study. Finally, a numerical simulation was accomplished to study the effect of confining pressure on the crack propagation process, showing that the SIFs increase and the crack initiation angles change in this case. 展开更多

Bioleaching of low-grade complex Cu&ndash;Zn&ndash;Pb&ndash;Fe&ndash;Ag&ndash;Au sulphide concentrate (of Majdanpek ore body, RTB Bor, Serbia) was carried out in an aerated bioleach reactor in the presence of mesophilic mixed bacterial culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans, and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. A mesophilic acidophiles culture was isolated from the acidic solution of the underground copper mine of Bor, Serbia. The nutrient medium was 9K at pH 1.6. 87% of the particles were <10 &micro;m in size, with a pulp density of 8% (w/v). Bioleaching efficiencies of 89% for zinc, 83% for copper, and 68% for iron can be achieved in the examined conditions. Kinetic analysis shows that the change in leaching corresponds to the Spencer-Topley kinetic model for diffusion-controlled topochemical reactions. 展开更多

Production of copper powders by the potentiostatic electrolysis under different hydrogen evolution conditions was investigated. Copper powders were characterized by the scanning electron microscope(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD),particle size distribution(PSD), and by the determination of the specific surface area(SSA) of the formed powders. Depending on quantity of hydrogen generated during electrolysis, the two types of particles were formed: dendrites and cauliflower-like particles. The dendrites were formed without, while cauliflower-like particles with the quantity of evolved hydrogen enough to achieve strong effect on hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer. Although macro structure of the particles was very different, they showed similar micro structure. Namely, both types of the particles consisted of smalal agglomerates of approximately spherical Cu grains at the micro level. The existence of the spherical morphology was just responsible for random orientation of Cu crystallites in both types of particles. The SSA of cauliflower-like particles was more than two times larger than that of the dendrites, while their size was considerably smaller than that of the dendritic particles. In this way, the useful benefit of Cu powder formation in the conditions of vigorous hydrogen evolution is shown. 展开更多

The thermodynamic properties and the microstructure, hardness and electrical conductivity of shape memory alloys (SMAs) belonging to ternary Cu?Al?Zn system were studied by Muggianu model and experiment, respectively. The isothermal section of phase diagram at 293 K was calculated using Thermo-Calc software. Experiments were conducted by X-ray diffraction, light optic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, hardness and electrical conductivity measurements. The calculated values of thermodynamic properties indicate that Cu shows good miscibility with Al and Zn in all investigated alloys. The microstructural analysis of samples reveals that the structure consists of large and polygonal grains. 展开更多

Silver dendritic nanonstructures obtained by the potentiostatic electrolysis from different electrolytes at different overpotentials were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy(SEM)technique and X-ray diffraction analysis of the produced particles.The needle-like and fern-like dendrites were formed from the nitrate electrolyte at overpotentials inside and outside plateaus of the limiting diffusion current density,respectively.The three-dimensional pine-like dendrites constructed from approximately spherical grains were formed from the ammonium electrolyte at overpotentials both inside and outside plateaus of the limiting diffusion current density.The morphology of silver dendrites was correlated with their crystal structure at the semi quantiative level.The change of crystal orientation from the strong(111)preferred orientation for the needle-like dendrites to almost randomly orientied spherical grains in the pine-like dendrites obtained at the overpotential outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density was observed.This trend in change of crystal orientation and morphology of Ag nanostructures was accompanied by considerable increase of the specific surface area(SSA)of the produced powders.The average crystallite sizes were in the range of 38-50 nm,proving nanostructural character of the formed Ag particles. 展开更多

The phase composition, phase transition and phase structure transformation of the wire-cut section of functionally graded WC-Co cemented carbide with dual phase structure were investigated by XRD phase analysis. It is shown that the composition of η phase in the core zone is Co_3W_3C (M_6 C type). The structure of cobalt based solid solution binder phase is fcc type. At the cooling stage of the sintering process, the phase transition of η phase, i.e. M_6C→M_12C and the martensitic phase transition of the cobalt based solid solution binder phase, i.e. fcc→hcp are suppressed, which facilitates the strengthening of the alloy. Because the instantaneous temperature of the discharge channel is as high as 10 000 ℃ during the wire cutting process, the processed surface is oxidized. Nevertheless, the oxide layer thickness is in micro grade. In the oxide film, η phase is decomposed into W_2C and CoO, and cobalt based solid solution binder is selectively oxidized, while WC remains stable due to the existence of carbon containing liquid organic cutting medium. 展开更多

The results of experimental investigation of n-type semiconductor based on Bi2Te3 alloy were presented. The results of experimental investigation of n-type semiconductor based on Bi2Te3 alloy were presented. This material is used in manufacture of thermoelectric coolers and electrical power generation devices. BizTe2.88Se0.12 solid solution single crystal has been grown using the Czochralski method. Monitoring of structure changes of the sample was carried out by electron microscope. The elemental composition of the studied alloy was obtained by energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) analysis and empirical formula of the compound was established. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the Bi2Te2.88Se0.12 sample was a single phase with rhombohedral structure. The behavior upon heating was studied using differential thermal analysis (DTA) technique. Changes in physical and chemical properties of materials were measured as a function of increasing temperature by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The lattice parameters values obtained by X-ray powder diffraction analyses of Bi2Te2.88Se0.12 are very similar to BizTe3 lattice constants, indicating that a small portion of tellurium is replaced with selenium. The obtained values for specific electrical and thermal conductivities are in correlation with available literature data. The Vickers microhardness values are in range between HV 187 and HV 39.02 and decrease with load increasing. It is shown that very complex process of infrared thermography can be applied for characterization of thermoelectric elements and modules. 展开更多

Ultrafine tungsten carbide and fine cobalt as well as nano yttrium oxide powders were used as the raw materials. The effects of hot-press below the eutectic temperature and conventional liquid phase sintering on the structures and properties of WC-20Co-1Y2O3 cemented carbide were studied. It is shown that hot-pressed alloy has the character of isotropic properties and microstructure with homogeneous and ultrafine WC grains. However, the ultrafine and fully-densified structure is developed at the cost of the presence of large amount of cobalt-lake (unevenly distributed binder phase), and thus lower strength. Yttrium oxide in the alloy cannot play the role of grain growth inhibitor fully when cemented carbide with high content of cobalt and ultrafine raw materials is sintered at high liquid phase sintering temperature. Peculiar platelet-enhanced bi-model structure is formed in WC-20Co-1Y2O3 cemented carbide by conventional liquid phase sintering, which points out that yttrium oxide in the alloy facilitates the formation of plate-like WC grain. 展开更多

For determining the accuracy of a calorimeter over the instrument’s entire measuring range,a novel method has been established.For this new approach,(a)benzoic acid(C_(6)H_(5)CO_(2)H) as a certified reference material(CRM),(b)SiO_(2) and(c)a mixture of CRM benzoic acid and SiO_(2) have been used.To illustrate the essential difference between 1)the novel analytical method for control of the entire measurement range and 2)the calorimeter calibration,both applications of benzoic acid(BA)have been demonstrated.An experimental result showed that BA was successfully used to check the whole calorimeter measurement range.The results also showed that the same new method was successfully applied to determine the limit of detection and quantification.A new instrument testing process and a new measurement technique have thus been established.In this way,the cost of using CRM to control the accuracy of measuring the entire measuring range of the calorimeter,as shown in this paper,is minimized.The requirements of the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard are satisfied.ISO/IEC 17025:2017,together with ISO 9001:2015(quality management systems),ISO 14001:2015(relate to environmental protection)and ISO45001:2018(occupational safety),constitute an integrated quality system by which a testing laboratory may also accredit. 展开更多

A fine and platelet tungsten carbide patterned structure with fine yttrium containing dispersed phase was observed in liquid phase sintered WC-20%Co-1%Y2O3 cemented carbide with ultrafine tungsten carbide and nano yttrium oxide as starting materials.By comparing the microstructures of the alloy prepared by hot-press at the temperature below the eutectic melting temperature and by conventional liquid phase sintering,it is shown that hexagonal and truncated trigonal plate-like WC grains are formed through the mechanism of dissolution-precipitation(recrystallization)at the stage of liquid phase sintering.Yttrium in the addition form of oxide exhibits good ability in inhibiting the discontinuous or inhomogeneous WC grain growth in the alloy at the stage of solid phase sintering. 展开更多

The aim of this work was to investigate the leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate in hydrochloric acid with hydrogen peroxide as a strong oxidizing agent. The effects of the leaching variables on metal extraction, such as stirring speed, solid-to-liquid ratio, temperature and HCl and H2O2 concentrations, were studied. The maximum final copper extraction of 33% was attained with 3.0 mol/L H2O2 in 0.5 mol/L HCl at room temperature after 180 min of the reaction. The results showed that the copper extraction was increased in the first 60 min of reaction, after which it essentially ceased due to the fast catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Further, solid-to-liquid ratio affected the copper extraction significantly and the highest copper extraction was obtained in the most dilute suspension(i.e., S/L ratio of 1:100). The dissolution process was described by the first order kinetics equation. The apparent activation energy of 19.6 k J/mol suggested that the dissolution process was under diffusion control. The reaction orders for HCl and H2O2 were established to be 0.30 and 0.53, respectively. The results of the XRD and SEM/EDS analysis of the leaching residue indicated the generation of the elemental sulphur on mineral surfaces which tended to inhibit the leaching rate. 展开更多

The directional migration process and mechanism of cerium were discussed. Secondly, the polished section is the alloy is identified. Finally, based on the fact that the fracture of cemented carbide is resulted from the heterogeneous phase or other defects within the microstructure, the fracture surface is observed and cerium containing phase/micro-zone in the fracture source approximately 260 μm from the surface is identified. Electrochemical characteristics of covellite (CuS) are of importance from flotation and metallurgical point of view, as well as due to its potential application in solid state solar cells and in photocatalytic reactions. Also, the compound CuS appears as an intermediary product or a final product in electrochemical oxidation reactions of chalcocite (Cu2S) which exhibits supercapacitor characteristics. Natural copper mineral covellite has been investigated in inorganic sulfate acid electrolytes, as well as in strong alkaline electrolyte. Physical properties of covellite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the active surface was examined by optical and electron microscopy (EM) before and after oxidation in galvanostatic regime. Different electrochemical methods (galvanostatic, potentiostatic, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy - EIS) have been used. The capacitance of around 21 Fcm-2 (geometric area), serial resistance of about 90 Ωcm2 and leakage resistance of about 1200 Ωcm2 have been measured in 1 M H2SO4. The addition of cupric ions in sulfate electrolyte leads to the significant increasing of the capacitance, but having the increase of self-discharge as a negative side phenomenon. The capacitance of around 6.7 Fcm-2 (geometric area), serial resistance of about 80 Ωcm2 and leakage resistance of about 380 Ωcm2 have been measured in 6 M KOH. 展开更多

The as-sintered sinter skin and the polished section of WC-11Co-0.4Cr 3 C 2-0.3VC-0.2RE(RE=mischmetal with La/Ce ratio of 0.65) alloy were analyzed.It was shown that the microstructures on the skin and in the inner part of the alloy were all characterized with a WC+β+M structure,where β was a cobalt-based binder phase and M represented a RE-containing phase.There existed an inward diffusion of S atoms,which caught and fixed the Ce atoms in the alloy and an outward diffusion of La atoms during the sintering process.Consequently,the M phase was characterized with the decreased La/Ce ratio(0.59) in the inner part and the increased La/Ce ratio(1.01) on the skin.The M phase on the skin was characterized with a γ-Ce 2 S 3 type structure.To suppress the long range migration of rare earth to the skin,S in the sintering atmosphere had to be eliminated. 展开更多

A simultaneous experimental and numerical study of shear fracture of concrete-like materials is carried out using Brazilian disc specimens with initial double edge cracks and fourpoint bending beam specimens with double edge-notches.The interference effects of two cracks/notches are investigated through varied ligament angles and crack lengths.It is shown that shear fracturing paths change remarkably with the initial ligament angles and crack lengths.The cracked specimens are numerically simulated by an indirect boundary element method.A comparison between the numerical results and the experimental ones shows good agreement. 展开更多

The calculated results of thermodynamic properties in ternary Au-Ga-Sb system by general solution model were presented in this paper.The calculations were carried out in nine cross sections from all three corners in the temperature range of 973–1,573 K,and integral molar excess Gibbs energies,partial molar Gibbs energies,activity coefficients and activities for all components are obtained.The activity of gold and gallium shows negative deviation from Rault's law for all investigated sections,while antimony activity is close to the line of ideal conditions and even coincides with the line for high content of antimony in the alloy.Data obtained by calculation were compared with those found in literature.It is concluded that compared values show reasonable good agreement. 展开更多
