The objective of this study was to identify measures and factors that encourage the use of alternative transportation in the cities of Washington D.C., USA and Porto Alegre, Brazil. The methodology used to compare these two cities was an evaluation of their urban mobility plans, including strategic analyses and measures to promote the use of public transport. This approach was based on factors described in the following document: "Urban Sustainability: Impacts of Economic Development and Their Consequences on the Process of Urbanization in Emerging Countries", prepared by the United Nations. The results indicate different planning strategies, ranging from focusing on tax integration policies in order to become more financially attractive to the user, to using different modes of mass transportation integrated with active mobility. In Washington D.C., an innovative strategy was developed in preparation to forecast scenarios, as the measures comprised projection for the year 2040, which will respond to mobility demands in the coming decades.展开更多

However the aim of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of studying the morphological categories, using the geometric attributes of the shape of places, facilitating the development of three-dimensional view of the architects, in particular for students of architecture. This article is part of the Project "Education of the Eye" which introduces the training of the eye as a strategy to understand the architectural forms characterizing the volumetric space (architectural, urban and landscaping), through the polyhedra and their relationships. Environmental vulnerability usually reaches sites with greater abundance of water resources that are exposed to contaminable factors, which usually become residential expansion areas, and often extrapolate city boundaries. The general objective of this study is to assess physical characteristics of the subbasins of the Curtume and Agua Preta streams, located in the Paraiba do Sul watershed in the municipality of Pindamonhangaba, in the state of Sao Paulo (SP), Brazil. The current situation regarding this environment, based on soil type and morphometric and physiographic attributes, is specifically sought to be identified. The results show the morphological and physiographic relationships with the hydrological data that determine the natural pattern of the site, associated with anthropic actions that characterize potentialities and vulnerabilities of the area, thus determining environmental dynamics. The results demonstrate that urban sprawl and residential constructions in subbasin conservation areas should occur in a planned and strategic manner, without advancing to water conservation areas.展开更多

They are constantly attributed in Brazil by architects, urban planners and geographers, among others, who plan the space and structure them for providing for the population needs. In this context, this research aims to analyze the morphological structure of two social interest housing developments, considering that the lack of efficiency in construction has generated infrastructure problems. Specifically, we analyzed the layout of the two housing developments of social interest, morphology recurrence, layout style adopted, relating their characteristics. Results have shown that the more regular is the topography, the more is the reduction of deployment costs execution of the infrastructure in the housing development. It is believed that this research can provide discussions on the subject and present subsidies to architectural projects.展开更多

The general objective of this study is to propose a method of analysis of the adequacy of policies, aimed at sustainable mobility and its impacts on urbanism. Methodologically, the analysis is based on the parameters proposed by the UN (United Nations), namely, sectorial planning, mobility funding, management efficiency of urban mobility systems; and mobility system and support for green technology. The object of study is the public policies expressed in urban mobility plans, master plans and regional development plans. Through the applicability of this method, the results show the possibility of verifying the adequacy of public policies as a mechanism that induces improvements in urban mobility with greater levels of sustainability and the possibility of universalized access to users.展开更多

In Sao Paulo, for instance, this subject is within the context of the revitalization of its downtown area with the reintroduction of residential occupancy in the region as a consequence of actions taken by public and private groups. However, older buildings were designed based on the technologies and regulations available in the past and applied to meet the lifestyles of the time of their construction. This paper presents a method for the analysis of older apartment buildings, diagnosing their strengths and limitations in adapting to both the new Brazilian regulatory and legislative requirements, and the contemporary domestic demands. Requirements, criteria and methods for evaluation were studied, and defined as well as procedures for the application of a method which allows for a physical and systematic analysis of old apartment buildings. It was found that the proposed method can be an important support tool at the moment of studying the feasibility of rehabilitation processes, guiding and providing grounds for the design and building decisions of the professionals involved in these processes.展开更多

This article sets forth the first stage of a novel study that observes the informal city using the methodology of analysis of architecture called shape grammars. The idea is to recognize peculiarities in the occupation of the land and the volumetric features of the buildings. Rocinha favela, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is taken as a case study with the primary aim of extrapolating a set of rules for its morphological features so that these rules can be used to generate new shapes, whilst bearing in mind the issues of adaptation and transformation which are so characteristic of informal settlements. There is some expectation that this study may help improve the housing and public space in the favela and enable new housing programs to observe the way the buildings and different architectural elements combined, forming a new channel of interchange with the spatial organization of the favela.展开更多

The concept of walkability corresponds to the simple act of walking in a pleasant way along the footpaths. Therefore, the IAAPE method was used, which considers aspects of connectivity, comfort, conviviality, coexistence, convenience, clarity and commitment in relation to the space evaluated. In this study, 40 adults, elderly, pregnant and wheelchair subjects were interviewed for evaluating the importance criteria on public sidewalks for a given type of user. In general, reduced sidewalk dimensions and obstacle presence are the main displacement hurdles in most of the cases analyzed. Thus, improvements are needed to avoid stress situations that arise from daily routine, to encourage physical activities, accessibility, and the emergence of meeting and leisure points.展开更多
