Heavy metal contamination of soils resulting from depositing mine tailings and rock waste has posed possible health risks for communities nearer such facilities. The current study was conducted around residential homes surrounding Kitwe slimes (TD25). This work investigated levels of Co, Cu, Fe, Mn and Pb in the soils, and avocado and lemons fruits, growing near TD25. Heavy metals were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The work further assessed the estimated daily intake (EDI) associated with potential health risks to humans. In the soil, concentration levels of heavy metals showed a trend in the order: Fe > Cu > Mn > Co > Pb. Heavy metal contents in avocado and lemon fruits at 200 and 400 m away from TD25, all had p-values < 0.05. The distances from the suspect source (TD25) to where the fruit trees were grown, had no influence on their concentration in the fruit samples. Fruit sample results showed that Fe had the highest EDI of 0.22 mg·kg-1 (avocado) and 0.14 mg·kg-1 (lemon), though both results were far below the FAO/WHO standard range (12.5 - 19.6 mg·kg-1). For both fruits, Co and Pb results were negligible. The concentration of the five heavy metals in avocado and lemon fruits grown around Kitwe slimes did not pose any health risks to the consumers.展开更多

AP remains a significant challenge in the clinic due to a lack of specific and effective treatment. Knowledge of the complex mechanisms that regulate the inflammatory response in AP is needed for the development of new approaches to treatment, since immune cell-derived inflammatory cytokines have been recognized to play critical roles in the pathogenesis of the disease. Recent studies have shown that interleukin(IL)-22, a cytokine secreted by leukocytes, when applied in the severe animal models of AP, protects against the inflammation-mediated acinar injury. In contrast, in a mild AP model, endogenous IL-22 has been found to be a predominantly antiinflammatory mediator that inhibits inflammatory cell infiltration via the induction of Reg3 proteins in acinar cells, but does not protect against acinar injury in the early stage of AP. However, constitutively over-expressed IL-22 can prevent the initial acinar injury caused by excessive autophagy through the induction of the antiautophagic proteins Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL. Thus IL-22 plays different roles in AP depending on the severity of the AP model. This review focuses on these recently reported findings for the purpose of better understanding IL-22's regulatory roles in AP which could help to develop a novel therapeutic strategy.展开更多

Efficient water and nitrogen management has remained critical for sustainable rice production in irrigated rice farming system. Due to rapid global population growth and climate change, future rice production will depend heavily on developing strategies and practices that use water and nitrogen efficiently. The study therefore set to evaluate agronomic, water productivity and economic analysis of irrigated rice under various nitrogen and water management methods. To achieve the set objectives, field and pot experiments were carried out at the Soil and Irrigation Research Centre, University of Ghana, Kpong in 2015 and 2016 cropping season. The field experiment was laid in a split plot design with water management treatments as main plots and N fertilizer as subplot treatment. The pot experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with five replications. The water management treatments were;continuous submergence (SC), alternate wet and dry soil condition (AWD) and moist soil condition (MC). Nitrogen fertilizer rates were;no N fertilizer (N0), 60 kg N/ha (N1) and 90 kg N/ha (N2). Data such as yield and yield parameters of rice, water use, water productivity, costs and returns were recorded. Results obtained from both pot and field experiments revealed that rice yields were at par in AWD and SC but yields were lower in MC treatment. With N fertilizer, higher yields were observed with 90 kg N/ha. The interaction effect of submerged with 90 kg N/ha gave the highest grain yield. N fertilizer effect on water use and water productivity was ranked as N2 > N1 > N0 while water management effect on water use and water productivity was ranked in this order: SC > AWD > MC and MC > AWD > SC respectively.展开更多

Since the Indosinian, intracontinental collisional orogenesis results in multiple fracturings and magmatic emplacements in the Qinling area. Deep-sourced fluids resulting from deep fractures and granitoid magmatic intrusion are of a supercritical nature. Joint action between the fluid-rock system and structures leads to hydrofracturing and ore formation of the gold deposit. Firstly, the progressive coaxial compression caused the competent sodic rock series and the incompetent pelitic rock series to be deformed and partitioned. Lens-like weak-strain domains are hence formed and distributed at the approximate equidistance zones and the linear strong-strain zones, respectively. Subsequently, the progressive non-coaxial shearing and right-lateral and high-angle oblique thrusting lead to the most developed fracture system in the core of the weak-strain domain to turn from compression to extension and to link up with the deep fracture systems. The periodical huge pressure decline in the pumping center causes the deep-sourced confined fluids to develop periodic tectonic pumping, hydrofracturing and precipitation-healing in the sodic rock series. The gold-bearinghydrofracturing breccia bodies are hence ultimately formed at near-equidistance tectonic lenses. On the basis of the above model, the predicted concealed gold-bearing hydrofracturing breccia bodies have been preliminarily validated by latest drillings.展开更多

However, recent studies showed that there are many non-pulsating stars located inside the classical instability strip. The existence of these non-pulsating stars is still a mystery. To deeply understand the properties of these non-pulsating and pulsating stars, one needs precise fundamental stellar parameters(e.g. mass). For this purpose, the eclipsing binaries are unique systems. Hence, in this study, we present the TESS data analysis of one candidate pulsating eclipsing binary system, V948 Her. TESS data were used for the binary modeling with the literature radial velocity measurements, and the precise fundamental parameters of the system were obtained. The system’s age was derived as 1 ± 0.24 Gyr. The positions of the binary components in the H-R diagram were examined and the primary component was found inside the δ Scuti instability strip. However, in the frequency analysis of TESS data, we found no significant pulsation frequencies. Only the harmonics of the orbital periods were obtained in the analysis. Therefore, the system was classified as a non-pulsator. V948 Her is an important object to understand the nature of non-pulsating stars inside the δ Scuti instability strip.展开更多

A study was conducted to investigate the effects of fungicide treatments and storage temperatures on fruit quality of two mango cultivars, Keirt and Palmer. Mango fruits were treated with 0.04% or 0.08% v/v Triadimefon at either 53 ℃ (hot) or at room temperature and then either stored under ambient conditions (27-29 ℃) or in a refrigerator at a temperature of 11-12 ℃. Fruits stored under ambient conditions developed external colour faster than those stored at a lower temperature. Brix values for fruits treated with Triadimefon decreased with time. Fruits stored at lower temperatures gave least Brix values as compared with those stored under ambient conditions. Percentage titratable acid (%TA) of fruits stored at low temperatures increased over time. Fruits stored at lower temperatures recorded lower pH compared with fruits stored under ambient conditions. Palmer fruits recorded higher %Brix to %TA ratio, indicating a higher sweetness level. The firmness of Palmer fruits kept at lower temperatures increased with time when compared with Keitt fruit. Fruits treated with hot water at 53 ℃ and/or stored at low temperatures (11-12 ℃) had lower levels of anthracnose infection than other treatments. Keitt fruits were more susceptible to anthracnose infection than Palmer fruits. Mango fruits should therefore be treated with hot water at 53 ℃ and then stored at low temperatures (11-12 ℃) in order to slow down the rate of ripening and to reduce anthracnose infection.展开更多

The quantification of environmental impact indicators is based on the life cycle assessment system of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and the evaluation software BEES. Normalization reference values and weights of 12 categories of environmental impacts were identified, and the environmental impact indicators in the phases of raw material extraction, transportation, manufacturing, use and end of life were analyzed. By analyzing the environmental performance of a university refectory as a case study, it is demonstrated that human health, global wanning and acidification are the first three environmental impacts in 12 categories. The total implicit environmental impact load per square meter of this project is 18.448 × 10 ^-2 standard human equivalent weight. Moreover, 97.3% of total environmental impacts occur in the phase of raw material extraction.展开更多

Severe AP remains a significant challenge due to the lack of effective treatment. The widely-accepted autodigestion theory of AP is now facing challenges, since inhibiting protease activation has negligible effectiveness for AP treatment despite numerous efforts. Furthermore, accumulating evidence supports a new concept that malfunction of a self-protective mechanism, the unfolded protein response(UPR), is the driving force behind the pathogenesis of AP. The UPR is induced by endoplasmic reticulum(ER) stress, a disturbance frequently found in acinar cells, to prevent the aggravation of ER stress that can otherwise lead to cell injury. In addition, the UPR's signaling pathways control NFκB activation and autophagy flux, and these dysregulations cause acinar cell inflammatory injury in AP, but with poorly understood mechanisms. We therefore summarize the protective role of the UPR in AP, propose mechanistic models of how inadequate UPR could promote NFκB's pro-inflammatory activity and impair autophagy's protective function in acinar cells, and discuss its relevance to current AP treatment. We hope that insight provided in this review will help facilitate the research and management of AP.展开更多

This study attempted to examine the existing structure within the vicinity of KLCC and the transformations of its vicinity based on a square suggestion through morphological analysis using axial analysis and observa- tions. The axial analysis shows how the accessibility of the square has shifted within the city and compares it with an existing park. Moreover, a square suggestion can provide context for the Petronas Twin Towers as a landmark and symbolic building. A square, as a regular geometry, can aid in improving the configuration of the vicinity of KLCC. Consequently, this research is useful to architects, tourism managers, and urban designers because it demonstrates the importance of effective factors in sustaining accessible and sociable space, such as a square.展开更多

The concentration of the five heavy metals in avocado and lemon fruits grown around Kitwe slimes did not pose any health risks to the consumers.
文摘Acute pancreatitis(AP) is a disorder characterized by parenchymal injury of the pancreas controlled by immune cell-mediated inflammation. This review focuses on these recently reported findings for the purpose of better understanding IL-22's regulatory roles in AP which could help to develop a novel therapeutic strategy.
文摘Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is an inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract that affects millions of patients worldwide. It has a complex and multifactorial etiology leading to excessive exposure of intestinal epithelium to microbial antigens, inappropriate activation of the immune system and ultimately to the damage of intestinal tissues.Although numerous efforts have been made to improve the disease management,IBD remains persistently recurring and beyond cure. This is due largely to the gaps in our understanding of the pathogenesis of IBD that hamper the development of timely diagnoses and effective treatment. However, some recent discoveries, including the beneficial effects of interleukin-22(IL-22)on the inflamed intestine, have shed light on a self-protective mechanism in IBD.Regenerating islet-derived(REG/Reg)proteins are small secretory proteins which function as IL-22’s downstream effectors.Mounting studies have demonstrated that IBD patients have significantly increased REG expressions in the injured intestine, but with undefined mechanisms and roles. The reported functions of REG/Reg proteins in intestinal homeostasis, such as those of antibacterial,anti-inflammatory and tissue repair, lead us to discuss their potential mechanisms and clinical relevance in IBD in order to advance IBD research and management.
文摘The most limiting factors for irrigated rice farming are water and nitrogen. N fertilizer effect on water use and water productivity was ranked as N2 > N1 > N0 while water management effect on water use and water productivity was ranked in this order: SC > AWD > MC and MC > AWD > SC respectively.

文摘Macro-microscopic tectonic analysis and lithologic features show that the gold-bearing breccia bodies in the Shuangwang gold deposit, for hydrofracturing of the deep-sourced and alkali-rich fluids in the Devonian sodic rock series, are identified as hydrofracturing breccia bodies. On the basis of the above model, the predicted concealed gold-bearing hydrofracturing breccia bodies have been preliminarily validated by latest drillings.

文摘Pulsating stars occupy a significant place in the H-R diagram and it was thought that all stars inside the classical instability strip should pulsate. V948 Her is an important object to understand the nature of non-pulsating stars inside the δ Scuti instability strip.
文摘Harvested fruits of mango (Mangifera indica) suffer from both physiological and pathological deterioration in quality during storage which consequently affects their market value. Mango fruits should therefore be treated with hot water at 53 ℃ and then stored at low temperatures (11-12 ℃) in order to slow down the rate of ripening and to reduce anthracnose infection.

文摘Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by periodontopathic bacteria that affects periodontal support tissues.1 If left untreated,it results in loss of periodontal attachment and alveolar bone resorption.Approximately one-half of adults in the United States older than 30 years have periodontal disease.2 Though the disease is initiated by bacterial infection,it activates host defense systems that eventually lead to the degradation of the periodontium.During periodontitis, the disease progress involves further production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, proteolytic enzymes like matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs),and their inhibitors.
文摘Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an inflammatory disorder of pancreatic tissue initiated in injured acinar cells. We hope that insight provided in this review will help facilitate the research and management of AP.

文摘The existence of pulsating stars in eclipsing binaries has been known for decades. These types of objects are extremely valuable systems for astronomical studies as they exhibit both eclipse and pulsation variations. The eclipsing binaries are the only way to directly measure the mass and radius of stars with a good accuracy(≤1%),while the pulsations are a unique way to probe the stellar interior via oscillation frequencies. There are different types of pulsating stars existing in eclipsing binaries. One of them is theδScuti variables.Currently, the known number ofδScuti stars in eclipsing binaries is around 90 according to the latest catalog of these variables. An increasing number of these kinds of variables is important to understand the stellar structure, evolution and the effect of binarity on the pulsations. Therefore,in this study,we focus on discovering new eclipsing binaries withδScuti component(s).We searched within the northern Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite(TESS)field with a visual inspection by following some criteria such as light curve shape, the existence of pulsation like variations in the out-of-eclipse light curve and the T_(eff) values of the targets. As a result of these criteria,we discovered some targets. The orbital variations were first removed from the TESS light curves and frequency analysis was performed on the residuals. The luminosity, and absolute and bolometric magnitudes of the targets were calculated as well.To find how much of these parameters represent the primary(more luminous)binary component,we also computed the flux density ratio of the systems by utilizing the area of the eclipses. In addition, the positions of the systems in the H-R diagram were examined considering the flux density ratios. As a consequence of the investigation,we defined 38 candidateδScuti stars and also one Maia variable in eclipsing binary systems.

文摘In implantable electrophysiological recording systems, the headstage typically comprises neural probes that interface with brain tissue and integrated circuit chips for signal processing. While advancements in MEMS and CMOS technology have significantly improved these components, their interconnection still relies on conventional printed circuit boards and sophisticated adapters. This conventional approach adds considerable weight and volume to the package, especially for high channel count systems. To address this issue,we developed a through-polymer via(TPV)method inspired by the through-silicon via(TSV)technique in advanced three-dimensional packaging. This innovation enables the vertical integration of flexible probes, amplifier chips, and PCBs,realizing a flexible, lightweight, and integrated device(FLID).The total weight of the FLIDis only 25%that of its conventional counterparts relying on adapters, which significantly increased the activity levels of animals wearing the FLIDs to nearly match the levels of control animals without implants.Furthermore,by incorporating a platinum-iridium alloy as the top layer material for electrical contact, the FLID realizes exceptional electrical performance, enabling in vivo measurements of both local field potentials and individual neuron action potentials. These findings showcase the potential of FLIDs in scaling up implantable neural recording systems and mark a significant advancement in the field of neurotechnology.

文摘Macrophages(MQ)are major constituents of chronically inflamed periapical tissues in apical periodontitis. This study aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory effect of engineered bioactive chitosan-based nanoparticles(CSnp)antibiofilm medication on MQ cocultured with periodontal ligament fibroblasts(PdLF).Cells viability, spreading,PdLF migration, and intracellular CSnp uptake were characterized.Tandem Mass Tag-based proteomics was applied to analyze MQ global protein expression profiles after interaction with Enterococcus faecalis biofilm,CSnp-treated biofilm, and CSnp.Secreted inflammatory mediators were analyzed.Following bioinformatics analyses, candidate proteins were validated via targeted proteomics.CSnp maintained cells viability, increased MQ spreading, and PdLF migration(p<0.05).Transmission electron micrographs demonstrated CSnp internalization via macropinocytosis,clathrin-mediated endocytosis, and phagocytosis.Proteomic analysis revealed that CSnp-treated biofilm upregulated proteins(>1.5-folds,p<0.05)showed functional enrichment in the pathway of metal sequestration by antimicrobial proteins, while downregulated proteins showed enrichment in ferroptosis.CSnp upregulated proteins exhibiting antioxidant and immunoregulatory properties.Upregulation of SERPINB1 by CSnp(>1.5-folds,p<0.05)was validated.CSnp-treated biofilm reduced pro-inflammatory IL-1β and nitric oxide but enhanced anti-inflammatory IL-10 and TGF-β1(p<0.05).Internalized engineered bioactive CSnp reprogrammed MQ proteomic and cytokine profiles to modulate biofilm-mediated inflammation, and prompted PdLF migration, emphasizing its potential to regulate healing process in the treatment of apical periodontitis.
文摘The lack of visibility and the difficulty in developing a cognitive map may be particularly important in wayfinding and in categories where the use of accessibility and sociability will provide a square suggestion in the Kuala Lumpur City Center Park (KLCC). Consequently, this research is useful to architects, tourism managers, and urban designers because it demonstrates the importance of effective factors in sustaining accessible and sociable space, such as a square.
