Four armour materials, consisted of front hybrid fibre reinforced polymer cover layer, ceramic strike-face, fibre reinforced polymer intermediate layer and the metal matrix composite reinforced backplate, were manufactured and assembled by adhesive technology. The proposed laminated protection system is suitable for armoured ground vehicles;however, it could be used as armour on ground, air and naval platforms. The design of the protection system, including material selection and thickness, was elaborated depending on the performance requirements of Level 4 + STANAG 4569 military standard(projectile 14.5 mm × 114 mm API B32) and especially on a design philosophy which is analysed with the specifications. The backplate of this new composite is a hybrid material of Metal Matrix Composite(MMC) reinforced with carbon nanotubes(CNTs), manufactured with the use of powder metallurgy technique. The composite backplate material was morphologically, mechanically and chemically analysed. Results show that all plates are presenting high mechanical properties and ballistic characteristics, compared to commonly used armour plates. Real military ballistic tests according to AEP-STANAG 4569 were carried out for the total composite armour systems. After the ballistic tests, AA2024-CNT3 showed the best protection results, compared with the other plates(AA2024-CNT1 and AA2024-CNT2), with the projectile being unable to fully penetrate the composite plate.展开更多

However, there is a noticeable lack of research on automatic hydraulic tensioners. This study presents a comprehensive calculation approach for the principal parameters of a hydraulic automatic tensioner. An efective method, grounded in hydraulics and multibody dynamics, was introduced for estimating the dynamic response of such a tensioner. The simulation model developed for the hydraulic tensioner is characterized by its rapid dynamic response, consistent operation, and high accuracy. The dynamic behavior of the tensioner was analyzed under varying boundary conditions, using sinusoidal signal excitation. It was observed that the maximum damping force increases with a decreasing leakage gap. Conversely, an increase in oil temperature or air content leads to a decrease in the maximum damping force. The ship's parameters were not required to be known. An adaptive observer was first designed to estimate the ship's velocities and parameters. The ship position measurements were also passed through the adaptive observer to reduce high frequency measurement noise from entering the control system. Using these estimate signals, the control was then designed based on Lyapunov's direct method to force the ship's position and orientation to globally asymptotically converge to desired values. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system. In conclusion, the paper presented a new method to design an effective control system for dynamic positioning of surface ships.展开更多

To guarantee the overall performance, the loading conditions and deflections of the key components must be revealed to provide basic mechanic data for component design. For this purpose, a kinetostatic model is proposed with substructure synthesis technique. The Exechon is divided into a platform subsystem, a fixed base subsystem and three limb subsystems according to its structure. By modeling the limb assemblage as a spatial beam constrained by two sets of lumped virtual springs representing the compliances of revolute joint, universal joint and spherical joint, the equilibrium equations of limb subsystems are derived with finite element method(FEM). The equilibrium equations of the platform are derived with Newton's 2nd law. By introducing deformation compatibility conditions between the platform and limb, the governing equilibrium equations of the system are derived to formulate an analytical expression for system's deflections. The platform's elastic displacements and joint reactions caused by the gravity are investigated to show a strong position-dependency and axis-symmetry due to its kinematic and structure features. The proposed kinetostatic model is a trade-off between the accuracy of FEM and concision of analytical method, thus can predict the kinetostatics throughout the workspace in a quick and succinct manner. The proposed modeling methodology and kinetostatic analysis can be further expanded to other PKMs with necessary modifications, providing useful information for kinematic calibration as well as component strength calculations.展开更多

As structural components, beams have been used for various purposes, in many of which beams are often subjected to axial loads and static end moments. In the present study, an analytical solution is developed to study the coupled bending-torsion vibration of a homogeneous beam with a single delamination subjected to axial loads and static end moments. Euler–Bernoulli beam theory and the "free mode" assumption in delamination vibration are adopted. This is the first study of the influences of static end moments upon the effects of delaminations on natural frequencies, critical buckling loads and critical moments for lateral instability. The results show that the effects of delamination on reducing natural frequencies, critical buckling load and critical moment for lateral instability are aggravated by the presence of static end moment. In turn, the effects of static end moments on vibration and instability characteristics are affected by the presence of delamination. The analytical results of this study can serve as a benchmark for finite element method and other numerical solutions.展开更多

It is found that thin- film electrodes on rigid substrates experience much slower diffusion rates compared with free-standing films with the same material properties and geometric dimensions. More importantly, the study reveals that mechanical driving forces tend to retard diffusion in highly-constrained thin films when lithiation-induced softening is considered, in contrast to the fact that mechanical driving forces always enhance diffusion when deformation is fully elastic. The results provide further proof that nano-particles are a better design option for next-generation alloy-based electrodes compared with thin films.展开更多

Two flow models were used. One is the concentric cylinders with helical protrusion at the inner cylinder. The other is the concentric plain wall cylinders with axial flow. The radius ratio and aspect ratio of both models are the same with 0. 65 and 48,respectively. The mud is the typical fluid seen in the soil hardening processes. We used the water and the mud for the working fluid. We used the optical PIV for the water flow measurement and echo PIV for the mud flow. In case of the water study, the dominant vortical structures appeared in both the protrusion and plain model with axial flow.In case of mud flow, the vortices shown in the water model disappeared and the push and pull-up motion by the protrusion is dominant. We believe this information can be useful to understand the flow physics of drilling process in the complex fluid flow.展开更多

Using these estimate signals, the control was then designed based on Lyapunov's direct method to force the ship's position and orientation to globally asymptotically converge to desired values. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system. In conclusion, the paper presented a new method to design an effective control system for dynamic positioning of surface ships.

文摘This paper presents a kinematic analysis of the locomotion of a gecko, and experimental verification of the kinematicmodel.Kinematic analysis is important for parameter design, dynamic analysis, and optimization in biomimetic robot research. The proposed kinematic analysis can simulate, without iteration, the locomotion of gecko satisfying the constraint conditionsthat maintain the position of the contacted feet on the surface. So the method has an advantage for analyzing the climbing motionof the quadruped mechanism in a real time application. The kinematic model of a gecko consists of four legs based on 7-degreesof freedom spherical-revolute-spherical joints and two revolute joints in the waist. The motion of the kinematic model issimulated based on measurement data of each joint. The motion of the kinematic model simulates the investigated real gecko’smotion by using the experimental results. The analysis solves the forward kinematics by considering the model as a combinationof closed and open serial mechanisms under the condition that maintains the contact positions of the attached feet on the ground. The motions of each joint are validated by comparing with the experimental results. In addition to the measured gait, three othergaits are simulated based on the kinematic model. The maximum strides of each gait are calculated by workspace analysis.Theresult can be used in biomimetic robot design and motion planning.

文摘As a newly invented parallel kinematic machine(PKM), Exechon has found its potential application in machining and assembling industries due to high rigidity and high dynamics. The proposed modeling methodology and kinetostatic analysis can be further expanded to other PKMs with necessary modifications, providing useful information for kinematic calibration as well as component strength calculations.
文摘Delaminations in structures may significantly reduce the stiffness and strength of the structures and may affect their vibration characteristics. The analytical results of this study can serve as a benchmark for finite element method and other numerical solutions.

文摘The effect of external constraints on Li diffusion in high-capacity Li-ion battery electrodes is investigated us- ing a coupled finite deformation theory. The results provide further proof that nano-particles are a better design option for next-generation alloy-based electrodes compared with thin films.

文摘The human skin has the ability to sense tactile touch and a great range of pressures. Therefore,in prosthetic or robotic systems,it is necessary to prepare pressure sensors with high sensitivity in a wide measurement range to provide human-like tactile sensation.Herein,we developed a flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor that is highly sensitive in a broad pressure range by using lotus leaf micropatterned polydimethylsiloxane and multilayer superposition.By superposing four layers of micropatterned constructive substrates, the multilayer piezoresistive pressure sensor achieves a broad pressure range of 312 kPa,a high sensitivity of 2.525 kPa^(−1),a low limit of detection(LOD)of<12 Pa,and a fast response time of 45 ms.Compared with the traditional flexible pressure sensor, the pressure range of this sensor can be increased by at least an order of magnitude. The flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor also shows high robustness:after testing for at least 1000 cycles,it shows no sign of fatigue.More importantly, these sensors can be potentially applied in various human motion detection scenarios, including tiny pulse monitoring, throat vibration detection, and large under-feet pressure sensing. The proposed fabrication strategy may guide the design of other kinds of multifunctional sensors to improve the detection performance.
文摘V-shape hulls are widely used in peacekeeping efforts such as demining vehicles in order to deflect the blast energy and reduce the effects of mine blast. Blast resistant design and energy absorption enhancement of V-shape plates were carried out using finite element analysis package ABAQUS. Various geometries of V-shape plates with and without interlayer of materials like Al-foams and honeycomb were employed to analyze their effects on the deformation of the plate and applied stresses and strains. The results obtained show that application of metallic foams leads to better response of the plate and consequently results in more energy dissipation, less dame to vehicle and enhances crew survivability.
文摘The present study considers the impingement of a train of ethanol droplets on heated aluminum and glass surfaces. The surface temperature is allowed to vary in the interval 140℃–240℃.Impingement is considered with an inclination of 63 degrees. The droplet diameter is 0.2 mm in both aluminum and glass surface experiments.Thermal gradients are observed with a thermographic camera. It is found that in comparison to glass, the aluminum surface displays very small liquid accumulations and better evaporation performance due to its higher thermal conductivity. The relatively low thermal conductivity of glass results in higher thermal gradients on the surface. The droplet impact area on the aluminum surface is smaller than the corresponding area for the glass surface.Interestingly, the liquid accumulation area is not symmetrical. Moreover, the extension of the droplet train impact region decreases on increasing the surface temperature because higher temperature values allow greater surface energy levels that enhance significantly the evaporation rate.

文摘The simplified flow of drilling process in the soil hardening or oil rig site was experimentally investigated. We believe this information can be useful to understand the flow physics of drilling process in the complex fluid flow.
