Performance Prediction of an Optimized Centrifugal Pump with High Efficiency

The main structural parameters of the IR100-80-100A type chemical centrifugal pump have been optimized by means of an orthogonal test approach.The centrifugal pump has been modeled using the CFturbo software,and 16 sets of orthogonal-test schemes have been defined on the basis of 4 parameters,namely,the blade number,blade outlet angle,impeller outlet diameter,and impeller outlet width.Such analysis has been used to determine the influence of each index parameter on the pump working efficiency and identify a set of optimal combinations of such parameters.The internalflowfield in the centrifugal pump has been simulated by using the PumLinx software.These numerical results have shown that,compared with the prototype pump,the outlet pressure and shaft power of the optimized pump can be significantly reduced,and the pump working efficiency can be improved by 5.59%.In the present study,some arguments are also provided to demonstrate that,with respect to other optimization methods,the orthogonal test approach is more convenient,and requires less test times. 展开更多

The recent result of an orbit continuation algorithm has provided a rigorous method for long-term numerical integration of an orbit on the unstable manifold of a periodic solution.This algorithm is matrix-free and employs a combination of the Newton-Raphson method and the Krylov subspace method.Moreover,the algorithm adopts a multiple shooting method to address the problem of orbital instability due to long-term numerical integration.The algorithm is described through computing the extension of unstable manifold of a recomputed Nagata′s lowerbranch steady solution of plane Couette flow,which is an example of an exact coherent state that has recently been studied in subcritical transition to turbulence. 展开更多

Even it" the Department of Education are preparing the faculty members through trainings, seminars and providing them with syllabus accompanying the new curriculum, still the confidence for the coming teaching assignments for the additional two years in the system is vet3.' Iow~ The faculty members are now strategizing teaching methodology for the subjects they have to handle through upgrading not only their knowledge but also the teaching materials they are to use in their classroom. With the changing environment, the learning style of students also advances. Children are now exposed to various modern gadgets, thus, they learn more advanced knowledge about their environment. These modern medium must be an advantage to the teaching profession. Teachers must know how and what the children learn through these medium and create some learning materials that will augment this knowledge in schools. This study is a partial analysis of the learning style of students in different levels of the educational system and the knowledge they acquire through different modern medium and test the gap between this and the knowledge they must learn in school. Durian (Durio zibethinus Rumph. ex Murray) is an exotic tropical fruit known for its excellent flavor and strong distinctive aroma. Volatiles of durian pulp from different cultivars in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia were already reported. However, no study of volatiles from Philippine "Puyat" durian is available. "Puyat" is the most preferred by consumers in the Philippines due to its firm flesh with sweet and buttery taste. Aroma volatile compounds were analyzed by headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) method and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Volatiles were extracted for 1 h using 65 μm PDM/DVB SPME fiber and separated by DB-WAX capillary column (30 m × 0.25 mm id × 0.25 μm film thickness). Durian pulp produced 22 volatiles composed of 15 esters, six sulfurs and one thioacetal. Ethyl propanoate, ethyl octanoate, propyl propanoate, ethyl 2-methyl butanoate and diethyl disulfide were the major compounds identified. These compounds were also reported to be the most abundant in durian cultivars of other countries. Results of this study can then be used for future development of postharvest technologies to control the production of volatiles from Philippine durian pulp. 展开更多

Manufactured nanomaterials are expected to enter the environment due to the increasing number of productions which results in anthropological discharges coming from different effluents and seepages.This event poses potential threat to the environment especially in the aquatic systems.TiO2(titanium dioxide)and AgNPs(silver nanoparticles)have significant potential in antibacterial and antiparasitic applications,but despite their significant potential,the toxicity of metal oxide nanoparticles such as TiO2 and AgNPs restricts their use especially in humans due to their toxicity.In this study,the behavior and toxicity of TiO2 and AgNPs were investigated in aquatic system using Artemia franciscana nauplii and Daphnia magna.Nauplii and Daphnia were exposed to TiO2 and AgNP dispersions at different concentrations.The mortality rates of the nauplii and daphnia were monitored at 6,24,and 48 h after its exposure.Saltwater results showed that AgNP is highly toxic to the test organisms while TiO2 was non-toxic after 48 h of exposure.For freshwater,100%mortality rate on neonates was obtained from the AgNPs dispersion during the first 6 h of exposure while the mortality rate in TiO2 dispersion was 85%at 100 ppm after 48 h of exposure. 展开更多

Quantifying water quality and flow in multi-branched urban estuaries for a rainfall event with mass balance method

In this study,field observations were conducted after a heavy rainfall event in the Sumida and Shakujii rivers in Tokyo,Japan.The flow dynamics and fluxes of salt,suspended sediment(SS),and dissolved oxygen(DO)were investigated with the mass balance method.The fractions of fresh water and saltwater in seaward and landward flows were separated.The maximum salt flux in the Shakujii River was 53.8 kg/s during the flood tide,and those in the Sumida River were 680.3 kg/s at the upstream station and 703.7 kg/s at the downstream station.The trends of SS and DO fluxes were similar in both rivers.In the Shakujii River,the highest SS(3.1 kg/s)and DO(0.4 kg/s)fluxes appeared during the flood tide after rainfall.In the Sumida River,the maximum SS fluxes(6.1 and 6.3 kg/s at the upstream and downstream stations,respectively)and DO fluxes(1.15 and 1.21 kg/s at the upstream and downstream stations,respectively)appeared during the ebb tide.The mass balance method was used to estimate discharge,salinity,SS concentration,and DO concentration at a station with missing data.The results show that the estimated salinity and SS concentration had a significant correlation with the on-site observations,with correlation coefficients(R)of 0.950 and 0.835,respectively,but not for DO concentration(R?0.638).The disparity between the computed and measured data may be explained by the differences in velocity,salinity,topography,sedimentation,and the presence of organic matter.The analysis based on the advective salt transport components found a lower salt flux per unit width in the Shakujii River(0.36 kg/(m·s))in comparison with that in the Sumida River(2.88 kg/(m·s)).This indicates a higher probability for salt retention in the Shakujii River.©2020 Hohai University.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.This is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license(http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/). 展开更多
